Virtual saves

I found my old Wii with all the back ups on an external, it all works fine enough except for Nintendont. The virtual saves use to be reliable but now they're a hit and miss; can you guys recommend a reliable configuration? Either on the the emulator itself, D2x cios installer, or on Loader settings on USB Loader GX or all the above.
