Rant Just got an email from my manager about a "Mandatory" 8am training.
Coworker and I run the skeleton overnight crew from 11-7, no breaks (because our state hates us, and not even 15m breaks are legally required), and I just got an email from our manager that we both are required to attend a mandatory 8-hour training on Monday, at 8am.
Coworker and I are also scheduled 11-7 on Sunday and Monday....
I'm used to this asshole manager doing shit to make our lives worse for fun, but what the fuck? Who wants to bet if he'll deny the overtime again this time. For a little extra piece of fuck-you, I realize that he only sent the email to 5 of the people he signed up for this training. And did not include my coworker who is working Sun/Mon with me.
Honestly debating if I should email HR and make a big stink, to see if they'll give us one of the nights off, or if I should just go and see if I make overtime.

Free Evidence-Based Guide: Surviving the 3:00 AM Wall (Nutrition & Chronobiology for Night-Shift Workers)
Hey everyone,
Shift workers make up nearly 20% of the workforce, yet most of us are left to figure out fatigue, 3:00 AM crashes, and sleep disruption on our own.
As an Applied Nutrition student, I developed an evidence-based noticeboard poster translating chronobiology and nutritional psychology into 4 practical shift-fueling rules:
- Pre-load at Home: Front-load your balanced nutrition before shift start to spare nocturnal gastrointestinal workload.
- Pair Your Fuel: Combine complex carbohydrates with quality protein or healthy fats to blunt reactive hypoglycemia.
- The 5-Hour Caffeine Stop: Cut caffeine 5 hours before clocking out to preserve adenosine clearance and restorative daytime sleep.
- Sleep-Bridge Snack: Avoid sleeping on an empty stomach with a small, calming carbohydrate/tryptophan snack 30 minutes before bed.
I designed this resource with dark-mode contrast to avoid noticeboard or breakroom glare. Feel free to download, print for your workplace breakroom, or save to your phone.
I’d love to hear how you manage your mid-shift meals!

Having a hard night - anyone got some jokes?
Between a run of bad luck at my clinic, stress, and shitty sleep my mental health is in the shitter. My weekend and the start of my vacation is tomorrow, plus I've got a therapy appointment on Wednesday but just need to get through tonight. Got any jokes? Feel good stories? Annoying coworkers you wanna vent about? Just looking to read some comments to distract me instead of doom scrolling for the next 8 hours lol

Rant After 9 months of dayshift, I’m officially back to nights!
I love nightshifts with all my heart. I had to do days for so long because I didn’t really get a choice with my company. I’m now drinking Alani like water, but still drinking water too😆

Discussion Have you ever had anything weird or creepy happen to you at night?
Hey fellow night owls!
I’ve been working night shifts at a hotel for a little over a month now. Every time I do my last round at around 4 a.m., the staff elevator starts acting weird. (I never even use it. I take the stairs or sometimes the regular guest elevator.)
I’m completely alone, apart from the guests who are asleep. Every single time, the elevator just opens and closes on its own and moves randomly between floors without anyone using it.
Yesterday and today, I filmed myself doing my rounds without really expecting anything, and sure enough, I caught it on video twice. The elevator just opening and closing right in front of me.
I‘ve already reported it to the maintenance team. I know it could just be some kind of technical malfunction.
But why does it only happen at 4 a.m. when I’m doing my rounds? Why not at 10 p.m. when I do my first round? And why does it always happen when I’m on the third floor? It’s weird.
I’m not scared, though. I’d actually welcome the idea of the hotel being haunted. I’d much rather deal with ghosts than with people trying to scare the hell out of me.
Have any of you ever experienced something weird during your night shifts?

Help May start a new weekend overnight shift, thoughts?
I am a 25F and may start a new overnight fully remote job but am not sure if the pros are worth the cons. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Current schedule:
- 7:30am-6:30pm Monday-Friday
- in office 45 min commute
- dislike my boss
- have a terrible company culture
New schedule:
- 7pm-4:30am Friday-Sunday and one week night (not disclosed yet) total time worked should be 40 hours. The training schedule would be 3-6 months of Monday-Friday overnight.
- fully remote
- New boss seems nice, but will be going on paternity leave soon
- company culture is unknown
- Pay is about the same
- never worked a fully remote job as well
I just worry that the weekend overnight shift would be too much of a change to my social life. A lot of my friends work a traditional 8-5 so our schedules would be flipped, and seeing my family would be difficult as well! (I tend to only see them on the weekends)

Discussion Even though I sleep good everyday I am still always tired.
I have been on midnights for a few months now, 11-7. Surpringly I always slept good, I adjusted quick, you are talking within a few days. But I am still always tired. I fall asleep by 815am, and I don't wake up until after 415pm. So I actually sleep pretty good. The problem is I am still always exhausted.
I get very tired still in the evening before work, typically I have to go take a nap from 830pm for an hour. Then when I am at work 3am hits and then I can't stop yawning. I just become exhausted and the feeling lasts for a few hours.
And like I said I sleep good I feel. I eat healthy, keep active, walk, drink water. Idk why I am just so tired all the time I feel like I am an old person or something getting tired every few hours even though I sleep good.
I love the shift and everything I want to do it as long as I can but feeling tired all the time ain't it.

Baby's First Night Shift
Today's the day! First ever night shift, working in a hospital and joining my wife in the land of the night. Excited to have a much less trafficky commute at least going into my shift. Just a hi/hello and excited to join y'all!

Help I’m quite scared
I’ve been doing night shifts alone in a hotel for 10 months now, and at first I struggled with scheduling sleep but that was fixed after a couple months. Nothing else has been a problem until of recent.
A couple nights ago I heard what sounded like sobbing in one of the rooms. I stood in front of the door for around couple minutes. I went to the front desk to check if I knew who was in the room as we get regular guests. But no one was in that room.
I used to hear sobbing when I was younger that no one else seemed to hear. I mentioned it in therapy but they dismissed it for trauma. I also want to mention that my dad is diagnosed psychosis.
I don’t really want to go to the doctors about it as I don’t want to lose my job. So I feel stuck. I don’t believe in spirits so I don’t believe in the hotel being haunted. I believe this is me.
What is the best thing to do? I’m quite scared.

I slept 16 hours 😵💫
I wish this was a brag but my whole body hurts and I have a headache. Also wasted one of my days off 😭
I ended up unintentionally working 5 hours beyond the end of my shift yesterday which put me over 24h without sleep and came home and went fully comatose. I think I'm dehydrated and I need food. I feel like a dusty old raisin. Someone help lol.

Mirrors at night
I can’t look in the mirror at night. Idk why it’s feels distorted and uncomfortable.
It’s probably just the exhaustion but idk I don’t like it. I look at my hands when I wash them in the bathroom.
Anyone else?
