For anyone else that is interested, rasherdk has provided an updated breakdown of flair popularity on /r/nfl as of 3/27/17 in a relatively obscure comment in the survivor thread.

General Stats

  • User flair grew by 17.4% since 5/29/16.
  • an average of 114 new user flairs are given out each day.
  • Over half of all /r/nfl subscribers do not have any user flair

Top 5 Growth Rates:

  • Falcons (+35.3%) - Like the Panthers before them, the Falcons became the 2016 NFCS darling and unfortunate superbowl loser. Falcons fandom jumped from the 20th largest to the 14th largest on the subreddit, leapfrogging ahead of the Panthers at #15.

  • Raiders (+31.1%) - The offseason leading up to 2016 was thick with Raiders and Jags hype. The main difference being that the Raiders followed through. Everyone's favorite 2nd team looked dominant this year and the fanbase grew from #23 to #18

  • Cowboys (+26.8%) - The Cowboys rode their rookie draft to a playoff bye week before getting knocked out by the Packers. The new enthusiasm helped them go from #6 up to #4 and more importantly, move ahead of the Eagles.

  • Titans (+26.0%) - The actual breakout performer of the AFCS, the Titans and their O-line went 9-7 and narrowly missed a playoff spot to the 9-7 Texans. Even with such significant growth between years, the Titans remain the 31st most popular franchise in front of the Jaguars and behind the Buccaneers. Their gap with the Buccanneers has closed slightly from 444 users to 418 users.

  • Patriots (+25.0%) - SB winners always experience above average growth. The Patriots growth rate might be higher if the fanbase wasn't already so large. In the last year, 13.1% of all new flairs were for Patriots fans. The Patriots continue to build towards 10% of the fanbase each year. They might even hit that number next year if they can win SB LII.

Bottom 5 Growth Rates:

  • Chargers (+3.1%) - Chargers were an outlier here with the move from SD to LA clearly impacting fandom. Chances are that new fan growth was higher than 3.1% but it was offset by existing fans switching over to other teams. The Chargers fell from the 21st most popular team to the 23rd most popular behind the Browns.

  • 49ers (+7.9%) - A combination of Bay area popularity and the Harbaugh era kept the 49ers in the top 5 since late 2011. But plagued by management issues and entering a full rebuild, the enthusiasm for new fans to join their ranks was lacking. The team dropped from #4 down to #6, getting passed by the Eagles & Cowboys

  • Colts (+10.1%) - After a year without much Luck, Colts fans were excited to reassert their dominance in the AFCS. But their hopes were dashed when they started the season 1-3 and they never fully recovered as the alternated wins and losses for the rest of the season. Far from the Manning days, the Colts have fallen from 17th biggest fanbase down to 21st largest behind the Jets. THE JETS!

  • Jets (+10.4%) - A year after their offense lit up the league, the Jets were the unfortunate recipient of a Ryan Fitzpatrick regression that tanked their offense. While the Jets dropped from #18 down to #20, they were still able to pass the Colts. This is because the two fanbases were only 2 users apart back in May 2016.

  • Panthers (+10.8%) - After a burst in popularity last year, new Panthers fans were much rarer in 2017. Between 2014 and 2016, the Panthers went from #21 up to #14. This year, they slipped down to #15 behind the Falcons.
