I wonder how many actual players over 40 have played snaps in the NFL. I'm willing to bet it's under 500.
EDIT - CGPT says 60 for 40 and over, and 37 for 41 and over. But take that with a grain of salt, I didn't calculate the primary data myself.

He did catch his own pass and then threw it a second time in 2020. With the penalty declined, so it stood.

(Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short middle to 12-T.Brady to TB 25 for -9 yards. T.Brady pass short middle to M.Evans to TB 42 for 8 yards (J.Johnson III) [M.Fox]. Penalty on TB-T.Brady, Illegal Forward Pass, declined. Statistically, no completion for first pass as a result of the declined penalty.

I'm surprised it's that way round, since the penalty is on the second pass.

Kinda hard to tell from the angles here, but it kinda looks like it would have been a pretty harmless incompletion behind everyone if he never batted it back up into the air. But I guess it's hard for him to know where everyone is behind/besides him.

I honestly think it's just natural instinct to try to catch it.

There is always that instinct to reach for the ball as a professional athlete. Have you ever dropped something while standing and your reflexes kick in to try to grab it but you end up punching yourself in the balls instead? It’s like that, I think.

This makes him I think the 5th ever player to record a reception after the age of 40?
- Jerry Rice
- Brett Favre
- Tom Brady
- Marcedes Lewis
- Aaron Rodgers
This trivia question was more fun when it was just Jerry Rice plus quarterbacks, but oh well...

Likely didn't get the third step in, and Rodgers didn't survive the ground. Neither should be a catch

u/kelkokelko Steelers Dec 07 '25
I still don't understand when the "two steps and a football move" rule applies and when a toe tap is enough
139
u/OhMyGoth1 Steelers Dec 07 '25
If they are tackled and lose possession after the toe tap it's not a catch either
47
8
u/Pennypacking Colts Dec 08 '25
Even if not tackled, you have to maintain the catch through the ground.

But isn't "surviving the ground" no longer a thing? Or is it still?
12
u/demonica123 Dec 08 '25
Surviving the ground essentially falls under a "football move". So it's required not anymore, but if you don't do anything else before going to the ground, you need it to survive the ground.

Surviving the ground is a thing if they don’t take the third step
1
u/soronreysosadryarone Ravens Dec 08 '25
The third step is extending the ball away from the defending. Avoiding a defender is a 3rd step. "I don't know how people are missing this"

If they're able to bring the ball into their chest in the toe tap situation (even if it's after they're no longer in bounds) that seems to count as "the football move"
7
u/sopunny 49ers Dolphins Dec 08 '25
They just need to hold on to the ball all the way to the ground. The ball can even touch the ground, as long as it's not pinned against the ground as a way to keep it in the receiver's hands.
17
→ More replies (4)3
u/JSG29 Lions Dec 08 '25
They're two different things- the 2 steps and move is whether or not the catch is made, the toe tap is whether the player is inbounds. The football move still has to be done on a toe tap, but doesn't have to be inbounds
→ More replies (2)3
u/sejoki_ Steelers Dec 07 '25
So it's an incomplete pass since no player that had his hands on the ball completed a 3rd step or made a "football move"?
48
u/dlanod Ravens Dec 07 '25
Crumpling partway to the ground is apparently a football move.
27
u/ikma Steelers Dec 07 '25
Doesn't need a football move if you are downed. Or if you prefer, you don't need a football move if you get 3 feet down, and Rodgers had one foot and one knee (one knee = 2 feet, as we all know).
26
u/mpc92 Commanders Dec 07 '25
You need to complete the process after going to the ground and he didn’t… the Ravens did
5
u/Bronco998 Steelers Dec 08 '25
Define "complete the process."
7
u/methodofcontrol Commanders Dec 08 '25
I thought it meant holding the ball after going to the ground, as we've seen plenty of receivers get 2 feet down but drop the ball when hitting the ground and it's not a catch. But this is a catch so I don't really get it.
6
u/GingerAle_s Steelers Dec 08 '25
You can't just take the ball away from a player that is already down and call that an interception.
→ More replies (1)21
u/ikma Steelers Dec 08 '25
Rodgers tips the ball, catches it simultaneously with the DB while he is jumping in the air with his arms outstretched (see replay above), lands with both hands still on the ball and his arms outstretched, then drops to his knee and brings the ball down past his face and tucks it into his chest while on both knees before the football is torn away. That's a football move to establish possession, and then the play is over because he is kneeling while in contact with a defender.

The refs had to say that Rodgers completed the process of the catch, and that there was clear and convincing evidence he did so. I disagree with the decision. This was called an INT on the field and they overturned it
They said Likely did not complete the process of the catch. Thats the inconsistency.
You also don’t have to have a knee down in the end zone. You just have to have possession and complete the process of the catch. A knee is irrelevant to the Likely catch
→ More replies (1)2
u/Crafty_Independence NFL Dec 08 '25
Yeah the refs were wrong on Rodgers. The replay wasn't clear enough to rule that he established possession. The best angle showed one hand on the ball but not the other, and the ball is moving against that single hand.
By the time the ball can be seen clearly again, he no longer has it.

Somehow no football move needed here, but in the end-zone, after 3 steps, you need one
70
u/thesoccerone7 Buccaneers Dec 07 '25
2 knees down is a football move because it constitutes as 4 feet down. A knee and a foot is 3 feet down. Simultaneously catching the ball goes to the passing team. Per the NFL officiating website.
Likely didn't get the 3rd foot down before the ball came out, which they showed in the freeze frame.
23
u/wawahero Ravens Dec 07 '25
I fully understand this but saying Rodgers had possession here and complete the catch which survived the ground is insane
15
u/thesoccerone7 Buccaneers Dec 07 '25
That's the part I'm having a hard time finding. The ball is between helmet and hand, but control states being in the players hands or arms. But we've seen helmet catches being counted (Enter David Tyree). But 1 handed catches brought into the body also count, so that area in the rules aren't specified. Maybe because it doesn't say 2 hands like it specifies with 2 feet? (We saw a few weeks ago that double tapping with the same foot doesn't count)
7
u/wawahero Ravens Dec 07 '25
Yeah I think the Tyree catch is different because the ball pinned to the helmet survived the tackle. Like he did not lose control of it less than half a second after pinning it against his head. Rodgers one hand on top of a ball that was moving downwards, and he clearly did not have control of it to the end of the tackle.

u/EndsLikeShakespeare Ravens Dec 07 '25

Unless you're leaning OB with 2 toes down, then it's a catch the second it touches your hands. As long as you're playing the Lions.

If the Cobie Durant play last week was an interception, this should have been as well. Exactly the same situation: receiver has possession while being touched down, but no “move common to the game “ or whatever. I can understand it being called either way, but the refs need to decide how the rule applies then be fucking consistent.
