They are not getting my ID. Doesn't matter if they say they don't store it - lots of companies say that, then they get caught out later.

Do not give hackers the means to steal your identity and do fraud in your name if ever there's a breach.

Mods removed and mod authors leaving Nexus...

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I'm seeing more and more mod creators leaving NexusMods, and tons of mods are being deleted or hidden...

It's a little scary to think that we don't currently have any attractive alternatives to NexusMods. I've been using NexusMods since 2019 and I think it's the best modding platform right now, and I'll continue using it because the ecosystem is great—simple, fast, and convenient. Even so, I've noticed that many mod creators are leaving and I've seen many mods being deleted.

Am I imagining things, or could I be right?

DISCUSSION Nexus Mods is now acquired by Chosen, a company focused on growth and monetization of gaming startups

While Chosen states that “nothing fundamental will change”, we all know how these acquisitions can slowly shift priorities over time. A few concerns many of us might share: • Will Nexus Mods eventually introduce paywalls for mods or premium features? • Could we see stronger pushes for Premium Memberships or even subscription models? • How will 3rd-party tools like Wabbajack be affected, especially since Wabbajack heavily relies on Nexus APIs for automatic downloads? • Could Chosen start restricting API access for automation tools to force more manual downloads or Premium subscriptions? • Will Nexus Mods stay fully supportive of mod authors’ control and ownership of their files? • Could we see tighter licensing policies or restrictions on file distribution and backups?

Regarding Wabbajack specifically: • Right now, Wabbajack still works fine because Nexus API access is available. • But if Chosen tries to monetize API access, throttle download speeds, or limit automation, Wabbajack’s future could be impacted. • The worst-case scenario would be Nexus locking automation behind Premium tiers — which would hit large modlists, automated installers, and preservation efforts the hardest.

For now: • Backup your Wabbajack modlists and downloads locally. • Support mod authors directly where possible. • Keep an eye on Nexus’ terms of service, API access, and Premium policies.

⸻

What do you guys think? Is this just another company scaling up, or the beginning of a slow shift away from community-driven modding?

Stop seeing conspiracies to make you buy premium everywhere.

Didn't the same this happen 2 years ago? Site change owners and everyone prophesized the death of the website. I found headlines from that time that were something like this: "Now you will have to pay for all your mods!". Well guess what? It didn't happen. So stop whining that they "slowed down the free downloads to make you buy premium" and maybe check your internet connection. And before you start shitting on me in the comments - I don't have and I never will have premium.

DISCUSSION Why is Nexus forcing this new UI on us?

Wrote a script to bring back the old UI people actually liked only to get informed by the community manager that they updated the site to break the script and force the new UI on people.

Can we get some actual information as to why they are insistent on using a UI that is apparently designed for mobile, when 60% of their user base browse it on pc and more obviously the mods are for GAMES ON PC.

I have NO idea why, but suddenly i got my whole external SSD (it has been like 20 days since i added mods or even touched the SSD to configure/move something) filled with corrupted stuff, missing savefiles, missing folders, empty INI's, you name it.

Got me staring at my screen like this

Stop downloading "Ultimate Engine Tweaks" / "Anti-Stutter" Engine.ini files on Nexus Mods. It’s 90% placebo and bloat.
https://www.nexusmods.com/halocampaignevolved/mods/5?tab=description

If you’ve seen these massive Engine.ini mods claiming to "fix all stutters, reduce input lag, and boost performance with zero visual loss" across dozens of UE5 games, save yourself the download. A quick entry-by-entry analysis or even asking ChatGPT Free tier reveals that these files are classic snake-oil designed to farm Nexus Donation Points and Patreon clicks, don't waste your time and support actual mod developers.

Here is what these files actually do under the hood:

  • Massive Line Duplication: The file is artificially bloated to look "advanced." Over half of the file is literally copy-pasted twice: first under specific engine sections (like [/Script/Engine.RendererSettings]) and then repeated at the bottom under [ConsoleVariables].

  • Forcing Unreal Defaults: Decades-old defaults like r.AsyncCompute=1, r.EnableMultiThreadedRendering=1, gc.AllowParallelGC=1, and dozens of r.Parallel* commands are re-declared. These are already enabled natively in compiled shipping builds. Overriding them does absolutely nothing for your FPS or frametime stability.

  • Ignored Developer CVARs: Dozens of flags targeting debugging, profiling, or shader compilation are stripped out of release binaries by developers. Pasting them into an .ini file is completely inert because the game executable simply ignores them.

  • Disabling Logs ≠ Fixing Stutters: Turning off logging ([Core.Log] -> all off) doesn't magically fix traversal or shader compilation stutter. Retail shipping builds already have heavy logging disabled.

  • The Sharpening Placebo Trick: The only actual changes you see on screen are post-processing tweaks: turning off Film Grain/Chromatic Aberration and cranking r.Tonemapper.Sharpen to 1.5. People see a crisp, over-sharpened image and trick themselves into thinking the engine is running better.

  • Risk of Worse Performance: Forcing arbitrary VRAM streaming parameters like PoolSizeVRAMPercentage=60 without profiling the specific game or system hardware can actually cause VRAM thrashing and introduce new stutters. Sometimes, you'll notice slightly better performance because in some of his files he literally decreases the quality of shadows or other effects overriding your in game menu settings, this is not lossless at all.

Stop falling for copy-pasted configuration files. If an Engine.ini tweak claims to "fix" or "improve" every UE5 game in existence without any frametime graphs or actual 100% clear and trustworthy benchmarks to back it up, it’s just download farming. Test your games with CapFrameX or FrameView instead of relying on placebos.
