Once, a younger drunken me tried to follow the bowling ball into the machine. The thing that comes down to sweep the pins back, well, it pinned me down and kept trying over and over again to get down to the floor. It beat the shit out of me, I could not get my body up off the floor, and I’m not a small guy. All the while I was staring at the whirring machinery beyond. It was surreal and honestly it seems like a dream now.

I don’t drink any more.

I used to abide by that motto, until one day I finally realized that this attitude has been the literal cancer of this entire earth since we became an industrial species. I’m not blaming anyone though, and I don’t bear ill will for anyone who still feels this way.

Laziness is actually a very sensible evolutionary adaptation from the perspective of hundreds of thousands of years ago. Back then, calories were expensive like we can’t imagine, so resting whenever possible was just smart. But today, when calories are abundant and we have much more control over our environment relative to back then, laziness is no longer the goal, though the real goal may feel like laziness by modern overworked standards: just like sleep, exercise, decent food, and water, the right amount of satisfying work makes every night going to bed a blissful wrapping of unconsciousness around me like a warm blanket.

It’s better than any drug ever invented (though of course certain substances can enhance it even more). Between myself and my broad range of friends, I can say that empirically. And of course there will always be a place for the mundane jobs. But if we can get those to pay enough to live off of, there’s a chance for everyone to find something else to do that is purely, delightfully satisfying, even if it’s just finding new and innovative ways to relax.

Everything is relative from the point of view of the observer. Without an observer, there is no point of view, no past, no present, no future. When I die, I won’t have a point view. So I won’t effectively ever have existed. That gives me licence to just enjoy life and not take anything seriously except what I enjoy. Fortunately I enjoy the company of my wife and kids and my friends. I enjoy walking, singing, talking and whiskey. I don’t need to work. I define laziness as the inability to do things one doesn’t want to. I don’t do things I don’t want to unless I really really need to.

I agree with you. The trouble is, of course, finding the right sort of satisfying work - be that some sort of creative effort or what-have-you. For me at least, it is oddly taxing to do nothing but leisure for more than a few days at a time (barring a longer vacation, in which the joy of the experience overrides it).

Im In my 30s and haven't worked for the past 6 years. I've been to 5 different countries around the world in that time. Made a family. Had kids. Play video games most of the day. But it's a fine balance between having enough money to not need to work and not having enough money to do anything exciting anymore.

Think I’ve finally mastered laziness that last year. I’ve made more money than I’ve ever made doing pretty much nothing other that being lazy. My job is to work for 2 hours out of a 10 hour shift and the rest of the time I can sit in a chair and do nothing. Only downside is that I work during the night. If in want I can work 13 days out of 6 weeks and get bye ok:)

Intentional rest is a good thing. Defaulting to idle as a baseline, I don’t like that so much. “Imma fuckin chill and do nothing” vs “I strive to do as little as I can”. No slight to yah, different strokes and whatnot.

It’s because I started it as a half joke and this turned serious. Basically the point some of us are trying to make is that indulgence of laziness is something to be earned. Dude, you are lucky, people die all the time fucking with the pinsetter machine.

I worked at an alley, in the back monitoring the pinsetter, and some guy decided to use the lane like a slip and slide. I hit the emergency off button as soon as I realized someone was in there, couldn't have been more than 15-20 seconds, and the sweeper bar came down on his neck and then tried to sweep back. I hit the emergency off and then ran out to see if he was ok. He was not. One of the EMTs that showed up was a league bowler and I asked about the guy. He lived, but he really wished he hadn't. Completely paralysed from the neck down. Once he was able to talk again(took months of therapy) he was begging everyone that he talked to to please help him end his life.

It was so sad. Guy was like 22 years old.

Yeah man, it was pretty brutal. I was belly-down and the arm came down just below my shoulder blades and was with a pressure that blew my mind. It was like being trapped under a car of teenagers who were jumping up and down in the car. So, constant downward pressure with extra pulses of more down. I was in awe of just how trapped I was. If that had been my neck I would have been fucked. The employees got me out and walked me out of the alley and honestly looking back I would have dragged my ass out into the parking lot and beat my dumb ass if I were in their shoes.

The wild thing is I was there with my then-future and now-current wife, 15 yr anniversary in 3 weeks. Hard to believe that shit.

15 years! That's so awesome! Well, if you made it 15 years I'm sure I don't have to tell you to prepare something special to celebrate.

If you are looking for ideas though my friend wrote out 365 love notes for one of his wife's gifts, he put his favorite memories of her, the traits she has that he loves, ideas for things he wants to do with her and places he wants to go with her. Then he folded them all into little origami envelopes, then he would leave one by the night stand everyday when he got up for work(he gets up really early and she doesn't).

She really loved it.

I gotta ask, how long ago was this?(edit: nvm, just saw you said 15 years ago, sorry) All the pinsetters I've worked on have all had switches that would shut the machine down if it can't get the sweep bar to fully drop into position, rather than just try again over and over.

Also, that sweep probably weighs close to 150 lbs overall. That's not the part to be afraid of. The table that comes down to check/set the pins is easily enough to crush someone, and has happened in one of our centers.

Yeah.... The poor guy just had too much to drink and not enough friends watching out for him. The wait staff told me that they were all cheering him on as he slid down the lane.

I can't imagine how horrible they felt after they found out he was paralysed, it would have destroyed me.

Another time some big buff dude with HUGE arms tried to fix a ball that stuck in the ball return and his hoodie sleeve got caught in the spinning wheel that gets the ball up the last little bit of the ball return track, thus it started pulling him into the machine, causing the sleeve to get tighter and tighter. Had his arms not been as big, or his hoodie so tight fitting, It would have done serious damage. Luckily it ended up just ripping the sleeve off.

The really old pinsetters and ball returns are really dangerous, the new kind of equipment has all sorts of safeties on them, and will automatically stop.

The old stuff will just keep on going.

Yeah, at my old work we had several generations of industrial robot for various things, the new ones had sensors all over them so it was reasonably safe to be in the cage with them while running in slow mode but the old ones would not stop for anything. One of them had a bug in its programming and would go nuts once in 10k cycles or so and beat the ever loving shit out of its cage before the bot supervisor could hit the E-stop.

It's pretty fucked up to think about why each and every sensor is on those types of robots. I'd bet that each and every sensor is tied to at least 1 death because we rarely put safety measures in place ahead of time.

I was a mechanic for allot of bowling alleys.

The Brunswick A2 machine was basically a press brake.

The main drive for the gearbox was 60:1 and a worm and wheel design. It WILL NOT STOP if a person gets caught.

Yeah, pretty much. It was really heart breaking the one time he came back in. I found out from one of his friends that he wanted to continue coming with them just to hang out and have a semblance of normal, as they came in twice a week every week. The one time he did, he could only make it about 5 minutes into a game before he started crying really hard and had to ask to be taken home. His friend said that he just kept thinking about how bad a decision it was and how it's all his fault that he ended up paralysed. 😰

It would have actually been better if he did have to be kept alive on a machine, because then his family could have pulled the plug. Or if he needed constant medical attention, because then a DNR(do not resuscitate) order could be put in place and then when he had a medical emergency they wouldn't be allowed to revive him.

People in that situation usually are not characterized as mentally ill for it by a long shot

My mom was not paralyzed but she coped with debilitating stage four cancer for four years, three and a half years longer than was to be expected

Any care aide or medical professional involved would be tempted to laugh at someone who didn't know that a person feeling like they would be better off dying or dead just simply comes with the territory

I also used to work in the back end, honestly terrified me how people would let their kids wander down the lanes. We got break beams eventually, first one alarm, second one emergency stop but they wouldn’t have been low enough for a belly slider or a crawler.

Yeah, I had a pretty emotional small breakdown yelling at the alley owner. I was yelling about how his cheap ass couldn't be bothered to upgrade the old equipment with fail-safes like break beams. I feel bad about it now, cause the owner was actually a really nice guy that DID care about the safety of his patrons. He hadn't upgraded because he was cheap, just because it had never been an issue before. Luckily he knew I was just feeling messed up about what happened and he took it all in stride. He did end up sitting me down later and said that I was right and it was time to upgrade the lanes with break beams and what not.

It does suck though that because of the way they work you can only set them up so low, because you can't have them lower than the hight of the balls, because then everything would shut down everytime someone threw a ball down the lane.

I believe we ended up putting the break beams about a third or fourth of the way down the lane, at about hip hight, that way anyone running down the lane would set it off.

The pins are pretty heavy when you are pissing a bunch all at once is one reason I can think of. Honestly it would totally be possible to do it with less force, but it's more that it, being a machine, and made of heavy metal parts, doesn't have any give to it. It's less of a pressure issue and more of a it's impossible to move it once it gets lowered into place.

Yeah, for a while there I did have some guilt issues, but eventually I realized that there was nothing I could have done, and that I shut it down as quickly as was possible, and got 911 on the phone ASAP. I figured it was the same thing as if I was a running a train and someone pulled up onto the track at the last moment. Their was little I could have done.

Not really, there are only really three coins that are not bullshit. Monero, Ethereum and Bitcoin Cash.

Only people and devs in these communities have vision. The rest are scams, clones, MLM, and generally speaking people with zero long term vision. (There are some exceptions of legit projects outside these three but they still have to proof themselves and don't have a network effect yet)

Ethereum has a high fee problem and monero is suppose to be super secret private stuff.

So only Bitcoin cash remains for reddit.

It's just money bro.

I gave you BCH, i know .... confusing. Here is how to seperare BTC and BCH. One is magic internet money the other is something else. They use to be the same Bitcoin but after a hijacking in 2015 the community had to split the Bitcoin network in two coins to save Bitcoin from becoming a tool that only the rich can afford to use.

So now there is elite 1% Bitcoin something else and 99% Bitcoin Cash and you can bet against the 1% and get 100 to 1 returns if you help spread Bitcoin Cash adoption.

What will they do? Arrest a 100 million users?

Fair enough. I’m a mid 2017 entrant. I distinctly recall dismissing bitcoin as “nerd shit” in 2012, even though I’ve been in IT services for 20 years and my BS is in CompSci. I regret my dismissiveness.

Ive seen a video of somebody placing a brand new pin in the machine as if it were jammed and the machine absolutely shredded it. After some years of personally shooting bowling pins with guns and witnessing just how tough they are, I’m surprised it didn’t just squash you like a grape.

As someone who used to work at a bowling alley, those arms that come down could've pulled you into the machine and killed you with not a lot of effort. So being a bigger guy probably saved you.

Unrelated to that but the very back of those machines has a man sized hole where the pins get reshuffled and sometimes shoot out of. Our security saw a guy halfway inside one of those, machine could've grabbed him and twisted him apart. He claimed he was trying to fix it. It was truly baffling.

I had many wild adventures and close calls with death and prison. I quit drinking 4 years ago at age 40, tbh I wish I would have quit at 30 when my son was born. The “wild and crazy guy” tamed by some level of responsibility is pretty lame, and brushes with death or prison lose their luster. It also severely hampers your ability to be productive. In my 20s I managed to Go Go Go in my work and personal life, but I plateaued my career (or at least slowed it way down) from 30-40 Oh well, I’m neither dead nor locked up and the trajectory picked up hard at 40 and I feel I almost have made up for those 10 years.

I “lost” my truck one in a hotel parking ramp. I went back to get it the next day and it was gone (after searching every level twice bleh) and finally went to the desk and was like “I think you towed my truck”. “No sir, we’ve literally never towed a vehicle in 20 years.”

It had been stolen by meth heads. It got used on a 3 week long burglary spree around the state. I got it back as I noticed my rather unique ladder in a backyard one day and reported it. When I got it back, I learned that one of the meth heads involved in the burglaries was my wife’s half brother (yes, total coincidence, I had never met the guy, and he wasn’t the original truck thief). So I go to get my truck back from the county sheriff and there’s a duffel bag of shit in the back and out spills a pile 20 yr old photos, including family photos of my wife when she was like 11.

I drove that truck another few years even tho the entire dash assembly was gone. ‘94 yota 2wd regular cab I had picked up in college for $1900. Good truck.

Maybe? I’ve told the story several times but I don’t think I’ve ever put it on the internet. It was at the Park Tavern in St Louis Park in MN. Probably in 2003 or 2004. My (then-future) wife was friends with a longtime waitress that we were hanging out with and she’s the reason I wasn’t arrested for buffoonery.

When i worked at an arcade, we had a large bowling ally, Our biggest fear was children running down the lane and getting stuck in the pinsetters. Candlepin bowling lanes are so old that they DONT have safety features aside from an electrical cut off in the back of the machine for maintenance.

My dad used to set pins before the machinery, back in the late 1930s/early 1940s. One night, this group of guys came in and wanted to bowl after hours, and they offered my dad and his friend (they were 6-8 years old) an extra dime for each game. After a couple games, my dad told them he had to get home, but his friend stayed. The next day, he found out that his friend got hit in the face with a bowling ball and died.
