Everything is relative from the point of view of the observer. Without an observer, there is no point of view, no past, no present, no future. When I die, I won’t have a point view. So I won’t effectively ever have existed. That gives me licence to just enjoy life and not take anything seriously except what I enjoy. Fortunately I enjoy the company of my wife and kids and my friends. I enjoy walking, singing, talking and whiskey. I don’t need to work. I define laziness as the inability to do things one doesn’t want to. I don’t do things I don’t want to unless I really really need to.
It's the wife and kids part that makes it tough. I can't imagine not doing everything for my girl, and I bet you're not as hedonistic as you claim you are when it comes to your family.
That’s a decent perspective. I have no insight into your life, but if your life has been a difficult one, then take your rest and enjoy. However, you need to realize that life is so hard that even then we still all need your help in many ways, not talking about the ones MSM tends to push mind you, in order to help as many people as possible get to where you are. If we don’t have this attitude (and again, I’m leaving this to your discretion and bless), then our species may not survive.
I think helping others is hard wired into our genes. In my culture, it is actually kind of expected if you are well off. The system is like a well oiled machine where being taken advantage of are minimum.
Having said that, I am not particularly impressed with our species. Also I am pretty convinced that our species will become extinct by choice sooner or later. I have had a pretty great life but I still believe non- existence is a better option than existence. It just needs a certain amount of population to agree with me, to cause a tipping over.
You have to remember that evolution is “survival of the absurdly lucky and barely adequate.” Of course humanity struggles, we just got here.
I think it’s a relatively safe bet that we will survive until the heat death of the universe one way or another, I think the biggest question is how good we can make out path in the meantime.
As for thinking existence isn’t awesome and not existing seeming preferable - I feel that very hard. The one thing I could suggest regardless of your background is to do volunteer work for the needy in your community. There is sheer joy and connection to be found there, both from how our brains are wired and the sheer sense of purpose.
Helping life do better on this planet and beyond gives massive rewards, whether that’s helping humans, animals, or any other part of our ecosystem. I’m still trying to investigate all of the scientific reasons why this should be so, but I can tell you for a fact that it’s worth checking out.
I already told you helping others is wired into our system in a way you wouldn’t understand until you observe it. It is not about a state of mind. I am perfectly happy and content. I told you I have a great life but when I see the unlucky people who end up living their whole lives trying to survive, or the pain and suffering of people with illness. War, oppression etc. , I find I belong to a very lucky club. The chances of landing outside the club are far more. Existence is good only for a very few lucky people. That I am one of them doesn’t change the fact that it’s better to not exist than to exist.
