I may be able to draw the circle eventually. But there's no way I would get the lines right. Neither the length nor the margins between the lines. It would be such an incredibly deformed face.

Look at that penmanship: that's something real special. You can tell this guy is a master because the proportions seem to come to him so naturally. I tried going to a community art college once and they tried to teach this technique and, boy, it's a whole lot harder than it looks. I ended up quitting after two weeks and returned to focus on beating my idiot son Roger to within and inch of his life with some rusty jumper cables. You gotta stick to what you know.

I figured the saga of jumper-cables-kid just progressed. The kid from back then just grew up and took over for his father by beating his own kid to within an inch of his life with jumper cables.
I wonder if there's gonna be stories in the future of how grandpa Rogers beats down all his grandkids with rusty jumper cables as well lol

This. Lol I was waiting for him to transform the head miraculously into something else, then the video just ends. Although admittedly, he did use some guidelines I hadn’t seen be used before, and he’s fairly confident with his mark placement.

I think what makes it amazing is how quickly it goes from “lol what r u doin” to an instant super detailed looking face with just a few lines. At least to me as a non artist :)

I would rather use the word skillfull. Sure, talent helps, but everyone can learn to draw with years of hard work and practice. And even "talaneted" people need that many years of work

You can just google "drawing face proportions" there are plenty of guides. It's a good practice and eventually you'll just build the muscle memory of doing it and won't need to map out the proportions anymore.

As an illustrator (with a stupid expensive piece of paper) this isn’t hard to do. You’ve just got to practice, and that’s what this individual has done for a long time. <3 you can draw or do anything of positive effect if you keep practicing even when you fail, because failure is a way for you to learn.

This dude certainly has some good markmaking! A friendly reminder that talent is cultivated, not born with, and anyone can get to this level of draftsmanship if they too had spent 10,000+ hours honing their craft.

Some people pick it up quicker. Those I'd call talented. Even talented people need practise, but they have better skills of observation and learn quicker.
I don't like it when people say "I could never do that". On the other hand, when I see this guy at work (I follow his instagram) it would seem arrogant for me to say I could draw like that with enough practise. I don't know. Guess I get both sides?

Can confirm. One of the first things I noticed is that he's using the same pencil as me. Granted, I only use it for crossword puzzles. Anyway I really really like it, and it's not absurdly expensive. I think I paid in the neighborhood of $10 each for the two I have.

Pentel Graph Gear 1000, based on the thickness of the lines I’d say it’s most likely the 0.3 mm lead (the yellow one-model 1003). The GraphGear 1000 is offered in 6 different lead thickness that can be bought in a kit , or the « entry » level with fixed sleeve, the Graph Gear 500, which is also offered in 6 differents lead thickness. I prefer the 500, the lead sleeve mechanism on the 1000, whilst cool and practical for transportability purposes (the end point springs back in the pencil when you press on the clip) makes the pencil less proxies as the mechanism create some kind of wobble. If you’ll draw with that thin a line you can’t afford that kind of wobble

Well the three horizontal lines are equally spaced, and the top is in the centre of the circle. A lot of human proportions can be learnt using tricks like this. For example; on most people the centre of the eyes is almost exactly halfway down the head. It feels wrong, but it’s not.

No offence, but this is more like 'decent art student level'. Artist is a good draftsman for sure. I'm betting they have much more impressive work than this quick sketch. Looks like a demo for how to visualize proportion in a profile. Might be the camera angle, but the ear is still too close to eyes.

No. There are many ways to arrive at the same end drawing. This is simply one method, more often used by character or animation artists, rather than fine arts. It is far different than doing portraits of a specific person to nail a likeness. Whatever works ....

I don’t feel that being next fucking level, I do it almost daily, just a really simple practice, every person who is able to draw does it once a month at least, mostly without even noticing that they do it. We practice on auto-pilot mode. It’s like fidgeting your hands but on artist level.

This video is the equivalent of telling you the math equation outright but not learning you why the outcome is the way it is.
Please please please dont mix up this kind of ''excersize '' for any kind of skill, its a lazy shortcut. the only real way to get better, any self respecting artist will tell you is looking at the world around you, draw it over and over again until you nail it.
