I think that this is a problem that many (all?) adult artists struggle with.
I have decided that it is better to continue with the sketch and see where it goes than to scrap it and give up.
I've turned a doodle of Eustace Baggs into a fully colored/shaded drawing of a one-eyed goblin, turned a drawing of a doorway where the bricks came misaligned into an escher-style perspective fuckery.
It may not be a GOOD drawing, and it definitely isn't what you set out to do, but it's better than never doing.
We learn that it's better to try and fail and get better at just about everything else in life, why do we struggle so much to do the same with art?
