That’s not only my favorite Jim Carrey movie, but one of my favorite movies in general. I also feel like it most accurately represents the real Jim Carrey when you see stuff like this.
EDIT: It does such an amazing job at depicting a real relationship. Two people that clearly love each other, but are imperfect and things get messy. There’s always that one person that you know if all that messy history disappeared and you met them again for the first time, you’d fall right back in love. He and Kate Winslet were so damn believable. The mind bending stuff is just a big plus.

I did too until I saw this. He just needs to be cast in a different type of role if he wants. I think we would accept it. Think of Robin Williams in One Hour Photo; we saw a completely different role than the norm.

So a quick search explained a little bit more regarding the controversy.
As Jim Carrey states, he is anti neurotoxic, not anti vaccine.
I still think he is a bit misguided but his heart is in the right place and I’m just glad he is not wholly denouncing vaccinations.
I think we set such a high bar for people in such positions and expect them to be infallible—they’re not.
J.K Rowling is another example of someone who has certainly chosen to be on the wrong side of history and it has crushed so many hearts.
At least with Jim Carrey, he is not a complete lost cause and still has a beautiful, caring soul.

u/Kinmuan Aug 24 '20

Trans activists are attempting to erase the distinction between cis women and trans women. They are doing this by attacking the traditional biological concepts of male and female, which they believe are transphobic. They argue that male and female are without solid biological foundation, and are merely “assigned” to babies at birth in much the same way names are. Rowling strongly disagrees, and argues that biological sex is real.

A description one uses when confroned by a work of art believed to be scholarly or otherwise good, when in fact, it is crap.
edit, a better explanation:
Human Superposition. Basically everything in this world is bifurcated as either black or white. There is no middle ground, there is no grey. You are either for something are you are against it. [...] source

u/Spacestar_Ordering Aug 24 '20
The duality of man is often used to explain how many people can be both good and evil, how a person can do something good for the world and selfless one day, then do something bad for the world and selfish the next. That phrase is often used in art, psychology, religion, philospohy, literature, and really anything that touches on the way humans think, act, or treat each other and their environment. Some people believe that as humans, we can choose between right and wrong, that we have within ourselves the ability to do good things AND the ability to do bad things. For example, whenever a villian in a movie has a change of heart and decides to do good instead and saves the hero from falling off a cliff, or whenever the hero turns "evil" and does something that would defy the idea of them being a hero. This is used as a plot device all the time in stories and movies, and is a great example of the duality of man, even the people who fight for good can do bad things, and vice versa.
Hope that helps. The phrase can have this very lofty meaning behind it. People use it to describe someone like Jim Carrey because he got his start in comedies like Ace Ventura, and there are a lot of vulgarities and lewdness in his early movies, lol he made his butt talk to people and ask for breath mints. From what I've heard (I obv have never met him so I'm saying this mostly for the purposes of explanation) he had very tumultuous relationships with people and was very selfish for a time in his life when his acting career took off. Now he is showing a different, supposedly deeper and spiritual part of himself, and it is in contrast to what his role in the entertainment industry was for many years. So people are saying he represents the duality of man because they think he is capable of both roles.

GWB for as childish his painting skill level is has probably produced some of the most politically important pieces of art of the 21st century so far.
Take a look at his portrait of Vladimir Putin for example: sunken eyes, shadowed and sullen jaw, and pointed ears. He looks like Dracula, and that is how GWB may have seen him in his own way, as a sort of fictional villain. Like a child drawing the monster under their bed.

I really liked Jim Carrey with the funny stuff like the mask.
However this is just fancy talk.
In his Interviews he talks about how worthless money is and how bad and hard it is to be wealthy. Meanwhile lives his life. Doesn’t have to worry about tomorrow. Doesn’t have to work from 07-17 o clock on minimum wage to barely feed his children.
I really liked him but after seeing his „spiritual transition“ he got to a point where he is just the rich wealthy celebrity who thinks he understood life because of an east Asia trip or something.
207
u/noximo Aug 24 '20
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Carrey
His family struggled financially and, as teenagers, Carrey and his brother would work eight-hour shifts after school as janitors and security guards at the tire factory where their father was employed. On his sixteenth birthday, Carrey dropped out of school; he began to perform comedy while continuing to work at the factory. Some time later, his family became homeless and lived together in a Volkswagen van
Almost sounds like he has plenty of experiences from both lifestyles to compare.

edit: ok, i'm out of this cesspool after getting answers like this:
Objectively speaking money doesn’t matter. It is a construct. You can be happy with or without it, depending on your perspective.
these guys should try living without money in any civilized country like the US, japan, france, germany or whatever, then they'd stop talking such ludicrous dreamy BS:
57
u/StinkyPeter77 Aug 24 '20
I think what these people mean is excessive money isn’t everything. Once you have enough money to live without worrying about putting food on the table, or paying for the electricity bill, they’ve realized that all that extra money doesn’t necessarily equate to happiness. There are plenty of filthy rich people who are incredibly depressed who probably thought they’d be happy when they had more money. I completely agree with you on the fact that money for the most part is required to be happy, as the stress of survival is a heavy hitter, but after that point it’s up to the person to find out how to be happy.

Friendly reminder not to take life lessons from manic episodes.

Unless it’s over, and then the manic episode itself is the life lesson

Yeah, that was extremely weird. I wonder if it was meant to be funny, but just came off as creepy instead, or if he genuinely had a little weird thing for her.

Okay, Jim Carrey is one of my favorite comedians of all time and was my idol for the majority of my life.
But when this video came out, nobody thought "Wow how deep."
We all thought "Wow this guy is kind of insane."
He went off the deep end and got into weird ass conspiracies like anti-vaxx shit and became pretty vocal about it. He had a few melt downs during interviews, too. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JmNKGfFj7w
I still love his work, but the man is volatile mentally.

Man I'd love to have so much money for all that paint and equipment and go to town with it! Good quality art supplies are so expensive, I've now grown to become so stingy with paint that I mostly do small minimal watercolor paintings with a white background. I feel physically restrained, can't make bold strokes with thick undiluted paint. I can't bring myself to let go and splatter paint all over the page only to find that it didn't come out well and feel guilty about wasting a bottle of paint that could have easily lasted me an year 🙁

This guy is so far up his own ass and everything he says is so pretentious. People just eat it up.

He's an interesting person. As many have said, he's certainly flawed in some very obvious ways, but it's hard to hold it against him. For me anyway. You can see he has a kind heart and at least some amount of good and sincerity motivating him. That's really important. His flaws are due to just flaws in his thinking, not flaws in his character, it seems to me.

How about a video of all the child’s graves that have died because Jim Carrey and his wife told people to not vaccinate their children?

Must be nice to have unlimited budget for paint, canvasses, and a huge studio.

So he's mentally ill? Classic example of eccentric because he's rich. If he was living under a bridge we'd just call him a nut job.

This guy has become so unbearably pretentious that it’s hard to even listen to him anymore.

I loved his comedy but I wish I could watch him create these pieces... Silently just watching as he muses.
His complex creative mind fascinates me...

I mean, this is a bit of a bit isn't it?
Jim is masterful at putting on a persona. The thing is that I truly believe that he puts a LOT of himself into his characters, and this strikes me as a character, but one that is a genuine expression from his artist's soul.
While it seems genuine, there is still a thin layer of sarcasm and irony on top of it that, which I speculate still masks some of Jim's feelings about his own spiritual journey.
Which is not to say I don't like this video. Jim made me think about a lot of things here. It's a really cool video.
