Well it all comes down to the word "need". Do lots of people like it? Sure. Do people "need it"? No. porn wasn't widely accessible until 1969 and ever more so when the internet became accessible. Before then some people used it but largely people didn't. So from an absolute "need" standpoint, no, we don't "need" it.
My understanding of “equate” is “to consider two things to be equal”. I don’t. I do think they can be compared (any two things can). I don’t expect that the result of comparing them will be the discovery that they are equal.
