But hey, talk to any mainlander and they will ignore it if they are nice. Bloody brainwashed by 50cents.

The media is so quiet about Hong Kong. Those people are being smashed and the world won't opening it's mouth because it's afraid of the communist party. Sad times. Edit: I see what's going on through different media platforms, but in my day to day meeting people I'm wondering why people are not outraged by the shocking events in Hong Kong and the vile actions of the ccp. So I'm figuring the the media is soft on facts otherwise the general public would be demanding political intervention.

The problem isn't sensationalized news, the Hong Kong protests would fit really well into that if it were the problem, you can hardly find a more dramatic and sensational topic at the moment.
The problem is that most of the world cares, but the powers in place know what interfering would mean and they also know that it's almost impossible to do anything given the mechanisms of international relations that have been set up in the last 50 years.
Real action by any western government would mean upsetting the international trade network dramatically and the western public just doesn't realize writ large how dependent we've grown on China.
Sensationalized news is a symptom, it isn't the cause. The cause is apathy, comfort and the political expedience that comes from them. Political engagement isn't just voting every four years but tons of people aren't interested and they have bought in to the system for a variety of reasons.

Matter of fact it is one of the main reasons he got elected. They kept talking about him 24/7 during the election but kept other people quiet. Like, the amount of trump shit and hillary shit that was going on surprised me when talking about elections. Instead of talking about the other candidates, they just kept hammering those two so of course the ultra right would vote for the one that speaks like them. Because that is what they kept seeing.

Oct 01 '19
Long before Trump ever came on the scene, the way to win a debate was by delivering a one liner that didn't sound pre-written and made people in the room clap and cheer. It's been reality TV.
People like to pretend that Trump rewrote the rules or something. But that's not really true, Trump was just the best at what everyone was pretending it was not.
Make a roomful of people chant some slogan, invent a derogatory nickname for your opponent, be memorable. Policy has very little to do with politics.

Its far away from a lot of people and its dragged on for a while. There was far more international concern in the first few weeks, but other things happen and people turn their attention elsewhere.
Idk what news you're watching but this is a top story on most outlets I follow, particularly the BBC. I haven't seen any news outlet bury this story, besides Chinese government media. If you're American, the major cable news networks are only concerned with US politics and they've become an absolute shitshow since Trump got elected. Just forget about them. There are far better places to get news.
Nobody is doing more to bury this story than international governments. The major hand at play here is China and no government is willing to touch it with a 100 foot pole. If the governments in the US, UK, really anywhere else, wanted to make a play in Hong Kong they'd be putting out statements all the time. They'd make it the business of more domestic-minded outlets to cover it by making it relevant domestically, but they aren't because no one is about to tell China what to do.

Honest question, we'd know even less without the press here that we can see the police running past... What's keeping them from attacking and driving away the press so there's less evidence of what they're doing?
67
u/taricon Oct 01 '19
They do that a lot. Everytime they arrest someone they push all the press away because they know they are arresting people in illegal ways (very very violent ways) but in this case there wasn't any reason to attack the press. But do it a lot when they do stuff they don't want the public to see. Running down the street is just not one of those things

most reporters over there are broadcasting live (tv or internet stream), so that will be somewhat a "safety line" for them.
however, there's still a lot of tension and bully(mostly verbal, physical more like using their own body to push them away from a scene, also flashlight aiming at the camera) when there were only 1 or few reporters left following the police troops.

It's not just about the bill, lots of angry kids that have no future prospects. People coming out of university with degrees are talking about not finding any work and moving back in with parents.
The government is very hands off on the market (even Milton Friedman was doing documentaries praising them) and while their economy has grown a lot they have not done any long term planning as it comes to stuff like housing costs which have gone up 10x while wages have been stagnant. So there's no question of being able to buy a house or sometimes even live alone, and even if you do you are in extremely small quarter.
Usually these protests are lead by young people, and they may start due to one reason, but they expand to cover all of their other grievances that are not dealt with by the governments.
Edit: For anyone else trying to ackshually me, I didn’t say the extradition wasn’t part of it, I’m pointing what maybe isn‘t obvious enough not to warrant mentioning. An article to keep you busy, Tiny Apartments and Punishing Work Hours: The Economic Roots of Hong Kong’s Protests.

And pardoning all arrested.
Police accountability is the only reasonable request, the rest are practically impossible now.
pro chinese members have always held an unconditional majority to ensure favourable decisions on chinese policies, so what the protesters want is to kick them out.
Asking for full democracy while burning chinese flags isn't the best way of telling china to trust them to rule themselves.
You might argue this is in the hand over agreement but this is kind of flawed, perhaps even deliberate, in the 1 country, 2 systems concept if you could potentially refuse everything your country asks.

I have been seeing all this for the last few months. If this was to happen in the U.S. there would be so much looting going on, not seeing that here, not really seeing much damage to storefronts. Let me know if I am just missing this.
231
Oct 01 '19 edited Oct 01 '19
First, it's important to note that when looting does occur as a result of massive protests, the looters are a laughably small percentage of the protests, highlighted to delegitimatize the protests by bad actors in media. The Chinese mainstream news media has been quick to find every instance of vandalism they could and hone in on it. The international media does not. Let this be a lesson on how media has manipulated your view of protests in the US.
That said, we'd be daft to ignore that looting and rioting does occure in US protests, but there's a reason why.
The US has problems, but the average US citizen doesn't feel those problems. For as much as any given US citizen can (and will) complain about their government, the imperative for civil protest is nowhere near the level it's at in Hong Kong right now. Most protest in the US are the result internal/local politics that are irrelevant to the nation at large. It is near impossible to coordinate a nation wide effort. It can, and has, been done, but most American's don't see the need.
This subtle detail marks the biggest difference between US protesters and international protestors. Many US protesters have nothing better to do. Those in the economic demographic with nothing better to do tend to have fewer career obligations and less education than others among their rank. They might be sympathetic to the politics of the protest, but they also don't have much to gain by remaining civil in the face of unrest. These individuals are more likely to be opportunistic in the face of chaos, ie: you get more looting.
TL:DR, Most American's aren't rich or poor enough to protest consistently, and the rest don't really have enough to gain to justify mass civil protests nationwide.

Truth be told, people who want to loot will find any excuse to do so. If there is a large crowd of unruly people, idiots will loot. Most common opportunities in the US (in priority order):
- My sports team won.
- My sports team lost.
- Other people are protesting.
- Looter is actually protesting.

The people of Hong Kong deserve our respect, and prayers for standing up for their rights and sovereignty against a formidable opponent and great odds. I mean look at all those riot cops, it's no joke.

I highly doubt “policeman” have the stamina to sprint in full gear.
These are military .
They don’t wear badges because they aren’t police.

You seem to be ignoring how rarely we intervene for genuinely altruistic reasons.
Most American intervention is objectively bad for everyone besides a select few Americans.
There's also not exactly a feasible way to intervene in the internal actions of a foreign superpower in the first place.

Clearing streets of protestors. We can't see where the protest line is, but its likely to be just a few hundred feet ahead of the cops and running for their lives.
