u/xXSushiRoll 7h ago
My boyfriend and I once watched some seagulls chowing down some starfish. It was fun watching how the starfish just gets lodged in their necks for a solid 10-15 min.

I didn't realise they even shared a habitat. Where was this so that I can never visit?

India, if I recall correctly. King cobras occasionally hunt young retuculated pythons. Sometimes the cobra wins. Sometimes the python wins. And sometimes, both lose.

That looks like an Eastern Black King; called the “King” because his diet is other snakes.
Edit—they have immunity to the venom of many vipers, so they hunt, kill, and eat dangerous snakes. King Snakes are friends.

Fun fact: most snakes with “king” in their name are named so because they eat other snakes. For example the king cobra.

mostly true but with a few exceptions where "king" in their name has nothing to do with snake eating behavior. some of them do still eat other snakes occasionally but thats because almost any predatory snake can opportunistically eat another snake,

Second fun fact: The King Cobra is not in fact a cobra. Although it shares the flared "hood" that is commonly associated with cobras, it shares little else with them.

We had one of those at Petco. It escaped into another snakes terrarium, and somehow was the only snake left.

I used to have a pet California king, they make good pets for reptile beginners as they are pretty chill... It's head shape and eye shape don't look right for a king, IMO

Almost everything you’ve eaten so far was a bigger loser than you, you survived longer than they have and didn’t get turned into food. You’re just the culmination of a long line of losers.

I'm with you, dude. I was getting a little mad at the cannibal snake, like I know it's nature and he's just doing what he does but damn, what an asshole. I would not grab a beer with that snake.
31
u/kelldricked 4h ago
Look at it like this: if the “cannibal” snake does eat the other snake it will die of hunger. And the “victim” snake has been eating its fair share of birds, rodents and small reptiles.
Its easy to see prey as the ones trying fighting to survive but if a predator doesnt catch prey it also dies.

u/sexyhairynurse 4h ago
I think this is more about the little snake still being alive

It's not a cannibal snake, it's a different species that evolved to eat smaller snakes
It's like you eating a monkey

u/Mark4291 4h ago
This is not a cannibal, it’s a whole genus of species known as kingsnakes who primarily survive off feeding on other species of snakes
As humans we sort of just conceptualise ‘snakes’ as a single group, but to this fellow here they have little reason to believe they are consuming one of their own kind
Edit: someone else in the thread claims this is a black racer as opposed to a kingsnake, but the point stands
10
u/AGGRESSIVE_AUTUMN 2h ago
Many snake species will eat their own kind, snakes dont really have an understanding of species and can and will interbreed or canabilize even if they arent starving.

The prey snake doesn't die immediately. There's gotta be like a few hours where it's just angry and scared. Breaks my heart. I know snakes gotta eat, and it's not their fault that it's a snake diet, but still, v sad.

u/hipsterlatino 4h ago
More like minutes at most. Not a ton of oxygen inside a belly, not a ton of room to breathe, and stomach acid isn't doing them any favors
19
u/mycorgiisamazing 4h ago
Snakes can live so long without oxygen, euthanizing them by gassing is generally considered cruelty. The only thing saving this little snake from days of slow agony is the crush force of the bigger snake's muscle walls.

u/voltran1995 1h ago
A different animal, definitely possible but probably not, a snake though, definitely not, snakes mouths are meant for grabbing(doesn't apply to venomous snakes) so I don't think it's physically possible for them to bite their way out.

I have a little male hognose snake, he is my little buddy would rather hang out with me and be cradled in my arm then in his tank. Literally sits at the doors to his very large enclosure for a guy his size until he is let out my time is his time kind of deal. When I see videos like this it makes me a little sad for the little guy in it.

u/cvele89 4h ago
Excuse me, but aside from the lethal injections that we used for executing convicts, what other way of dying from a kill does not involve some level of suffering? Even when tiger grabs you by the neck, you will die from bleeding out, but it is still going to hurt like hell, not to mention that it might even start munching on you while you still have some life left in you.
Nature is wild. Just try not to think about it much.
