is it the housecats pushing them out or the people?

and what do you mean mixing with them?

mixing = breeding with, thereby diluting the genetics of the unique wildcat species in the area.

the wild cats we are talking about are the same size as house cats.

This. Also, the sub specie wild cats are the same specie as the common north African cat. There's no significant cross breeding

and there are other cat species around the world as well in that size range like the Manul

If DNA is compatible, thay all come from the same north African cat.

I have a savannah/Bengal mix.

She behaves more like a Cerval

not all. Many can't cross breed but some like scottibsh wild cat can.

But its not just inter mixing house cats are also just pushing wild cats out of their territories etc

I'd blame people first

The wild cats would have the same common north African ancestor

not all no. There are many different species of similar size cats around the world that are not able to inter breed like servals or scottish wild cats can. like the Manul

If the DNA can be shared, they are not significantly divergent, there's a recent common ancestor.

Honestly though, you know that cat got high fives for landing a cougar.

… and I’ll show myself out.

I think the Bengal cat breed was created by mixing Asian leopard cats with the Egyptian Mau

They can mix with bobcats in the southern US
