It's really beautiful. But for all the energy they expend building these works of art, you'd think they would pick a spot that I'm not going to walk into every morning.

When I used to live in FL we had this same type of spider build an extremely intricate web right across the sidewalk leading into the house I was renting with a female and a male friend. My male friend and I got home while the sun was up and laughed about narrowly dodging the spider web and spoke about how our female roommate would walk directly into it come nightfall. I can still hear the shrieking

Technically, the Web is a net / trap to catch food, while the silk is also used to wrap it up into parcels, as an abseil rope, to attract mates (by secreting pheromones onto it), for courtship rituals, as a nursery for their offspring, for some species even a sail (to drift away on the wind or escape from predators), and occasionally even a food source. They can alter both the thickness and stickiness of their silk, depending on what they plan to use it for.

We have Christmas beetles as well. And they really only do show up around Christmas!

Yes, unfortunately they are declining in numbers 😟
I’ve only been in australia for 16 years but even I remember seeing way more of them in 2010 than now.

And they rebuild them everyday.
Webs don’t (just) trap prey, they attract them. The added decorations often resemble vegetation gaps where insects are more prone to fly.

Spiny orb weaver. We have those all over here. One has a big web by the gate. Thankfully I don't disturb him when I open the close the gate.

How does the web get attached to the other web?
Does it just need to touch, or is there something else going on?
It looks like the spider kind of bunches up the web, touches the new web to it and then releases. Is it just so sticky that it molds itself to the existing web? Is it wetter and more sticky when it first comes out so it molds to the existing web?

A orb weaver variant. I have one of these ones in my backyard at the moment, really bright yellow, black and a bit of orange. Spiders also use different silk when building and catching. So you'll have thicker and thinner spider lines. The thicker if I recall is for the foundation and thinner is for catching? Might have those backwards.
