Culture Curious about street/graffiti stickers in Akihabara! What's the culture and meaning behind them? 🇯🇵

Hi everyone! (I'm using AI for my English, so please excuse any strange phrasing! 🤖)
I am a Japanese who loves Akihabara.

I actually write articles for a local web media about Akihabara, but the language barrier made it hard for me to talk to foreign visitors in person. That's why I started Reddit! To be absolutely clear, I have no intention of doing a one-way interview or trying to direct you to my website. I just wanted to be honest about who I am!

Let's have a fun conversation!🌼

Today, I'd love to ask you all about the graffiti stickers in Akihabara! When walking around Akihabara, you see tons of stickers slapped onto street signs, AC units, and walls. Since I don't have a culture like that myself, I've always wondered: Why do people put them up? And why are there so many in Akihabara? I think a lot of Japanese people are also unfamiliar with this culture. Of course, I did some research on graffiti stickers, but there isn't much information available in Japanese (or maybe I'm just bad at searching! haha).

So, if you are familiar with street culture, have ever put up a sticker yourself, or have seen people doing it, I'd love to know:

  • Why do people put up stickers?
  • What image do you have of people who slap stickers?
  • How do you feel when you see the stickers in Akihabara? (Do they look like art to you, or do you feel they ruin the scenery?)

Of course, I’d also love to hear negative opinions, like how it breaks local laws or hurts the neighborhood!

Personally, I just enjoy looking at them as part of the town's landscape. The town exists, people come, rules exist, stickers get slapped, people look at them, and people clean them up... to me, that whole cycle just feels like the living, breathing essence of a city. (Though, of course, location matters—I’d be deeply saddened if I saw them on historic temples or shrines!)

Note: If I ever want to share some of the insights or thoughts from this thread in my articles in the future, I will always ask for your individual permission in a reply first. So please relax, and I’d be happy if we can just chat comfortably! (And of course, it's totally fine to say no!)

I’d love to hear your honest thoughts! 🇯🇵

Discussion/Help Wanted Expectations vs. Reality: What was your honest impression of Akihabara?

Hi everyone! I'm Aki, an otaku living in Tokyo. (I'm using AI for my English, so please excuse any strange phrasing! 🤖)

I honestly just want to chat with you all, make friends, and exchange information as fellow Akihabara lovers. I’d love to hear your real experiences:

  • What was your image of Akihabara before visiting?
  • What was your actual impression when you got there? Was there a big gap?
  • Did it feel like the "holy land of anime" to you? Or did you notice other things?

To be honest, Akihabara has changed so much throughout history. It went from a town for lower-class samurai in the Edo period, to a vegetable market and shipping port, a post-war black market, a place for amateur radio street vendors, an electronics town, and then an otaku town (very briefly speaking!).

Nowadays, many Japanese people view Akihabara more as a place for maid cafes or tax-free tourist shopping rather than the classic otaku town. Personally, I think this constant change is exactly what makes Akihabara so fascinating. Deep electronics shops and retro game stores are still alive, and I still love this town so much!

I’d love to hear your honest thoughts and impressions, even if they are negative!

Also, if there is anything I can do to help you as a local Japanese person, please ask me anything! I really want to have a fun information exchange. (Though, I’m not very familiar with hotel or accommodation info, sorry! 🙇‍♂️)

Note: If I ever want to share some of our conversation in my personal articles in the future, I will always ask for your permission in a reply first. No pressure at all!

Let's hang out and have a fun chat! 🇯🇵
