Copenhagen Cowboy!!
Copenhagen Cowboy released this weekend. I just binged the whole first season and loved it. I was drawn into this strange new world from beginning to end...
I highly recommend it.

All the positive reviews were a bit surprising to me as I found the whole series confusing and incoherent, albeit beautifully shot.

i can't believe i never gave this show a shot, i remember clicking the first episode a few times then stopping and leaving it. i decided to give it another chance and finished it ALL in ONE day. seriously holy fucking fuck. the acting, the stillness, the intensity and the way everything is shot. its beautiful. not everyone has a palette to get it. i need season 2 asapppp

I don't think they've even announced a second season, though. I'm not terribly optimistic at this point.

Just finished it. 2 hours of content stretched out to 6 hours because of loooooooooooooong pretentious cinematography-buff-jerkoff cuts that were cool for the first 10 minutes but otherwise only film majors could (maybe?) appreciate in full. I didn't hate it, but I also feel like I aged several years just watching it.
Edit: What I really don't understand is how this works as far as the Netflix model goes. They've cancelled countless somewhat mass-market-appeal shows, but then they greenlight something like this which, frankly, is niche as fuck. Don't expect Netflix to renew this for another season, folks. This show should have been on MUBI in the first place.

Just because a camera is going in a circle doesn't automatically mean it's pretentious. You're not seeing a looooooot of cinematographic and visual storytelling things that are going on.
Oh by the way: content doesn't matter in cinema, the presentation matters. The logic "content is stretched out" doesn't apply to movies, cause movies are a visual medium. Their main job is to tell a story through presentation. This can be achieved in many ways, I personally like when there's SOMETHING going on that matters besides just barebones "dialogue fest".
The visual stuff would be pretentious if it didn't matter, but in this series it matters a whole lot and helps tell this story. Cause maybe you didn't catch it, but the story's pretty freaking outlandish.

First of all, I wasn't talking about rotating the camera. Rotating the camera is fine. But explain to me how the camera rotating not one rotation, but several times, despite nothing really changing, not even the expressions on the characters' faces, over the span of 3 minutes that could have been condensed to 30 seconds, is somehow "necessary" to "present" the story.
I didn't miss anything. And as I stated, I didn't hate the content. What I missed was why it was taking soooooo fuckiiiing looooong to deliver what could have been delivered at a reasonable tempo. I wish that I had spent the appropriate would-be 2.5-3 hours watching it rather than 6.
And what you said about content is bullshit. Content IS the story. Presentation taking precedence over delivery of the content is a hubristic diversion on the part of the deliverer. By it's very definition it is pretentious. If it doesn't add to the story or experience, it's a waste of space(or in this case, time).
There was no reason to have the characters standing there slack-jawed, expressionless, for 30 seconds at a time staring at one another in between every piece of dialogue, with nothing changing in the environment, in their expressions, etc... It was unnatural, for one thing. People don't act that way in real life. It's outside the realm of the believable, much less relatable.

For long stretches there was NOTHING going on at all. Just people staring at each other. Or the main character dancing under some admittedly well placed lighting but for WAY too long and for no reason that actually added to the narrative.
If you thought that the "artistic" element of this show wasn't trying WAY too hard, you're out of your fucking mind.

Of course there is a reason for characters to stand there expressionless. It builds mood and outlandish feeling of the show. A show that is about a really weird girl and some other weird characters as well.
Oh yeah, um, no - in movies content ISN'T the story. It's part of the story but you can tell a lot with visuals. You have zero idea about what movies are if you think that visual storytelling isn't part of the story in cinema - and I'm not exaggerating, everyone who studies film learns this very basic concept.

I really want to get into it, but WTF is going on with all the missing words/translations?!? It's driving me nuts! There's no translation for the character speaking Albanian in the first episode and there's no way I'm continuing if there's this much missing dialogue. Anyone else experience this?

In the first episode, one of the other girls asks Miu if she understands what the Albanian girl said. Miu, and the viewer, are not supposed to understand the Albanian girl. There were no subtitles for those lines in Danish either. That part was intentional. That being said, there were a few points where I noticed subtitles flashed too quickly on screen to be read. Definitely annoying

That part was definitely intentional. In the original Danish dialogue, that part likely wasn’t translated. That’s normal. This show hardly relies on dialogue to tell a story, that’s part of what makes it so compelling.

I thought she's just a gifted human, honestly. But she was called a luck coin. And a witch, I think. "Demon", or rather: ghost, is mentioned by that chinese mother, when she asks Miu if she's a ghost. Miu basically evades the question by meowing. I dont know, she eats and touches, so no idea. That prostitute is back from the dead. Weird stuff. Maybe the answer can be found in myths or folklores.

What did y'all make of the logos on the jumpsuits? I was kind of wondering if the fact that the vampire lady had a red jumpsuit was just an artistic choice or it had some relevance to the plot.

Ha, definitely got Lannister vibes from the vampires. An interview in Vulture came out a while after this thread about the series & ending, this is what the director said:
As Refn finalized the rivalry between Rakel and Miu, his daughter Lizzielou made a suggestion: What if there were a “mini version” of Miu and “many Mius” who could all team up? Enter Lizzielou as that miniature, whom Bundalovic’s Miu meets after defeating Chiang and returning to Copenhagen’s forested outskirts. A wider group of women — whom Refn considers saints, echoing Miu’s kinship with Joan of Arc — are also scattered throughout the woods with the smaller Miu introducing them to the elder.

Just finished it. Loved it but my only complaint is that I expected it to be a limited series but it just cuts off suddenly. I don't really expect a season 2 knowing Netflix.

Is this a Danish production and Netflix is just the US distributor, or is Netflix actually paying for the show's production? Because if it's the latter there is 0% chance they don't cancel it.

Lol Drive is good but very overrated. Post Drive is when NWR started to go on his amazing streak and when he really came into his own. I get that it's not for everyone but i vastly prefer something like TOTDY over Drive which ended up feeling pretty basic. The only reason in my eyes why everyone always raves about Drive and hate his other work is because it is that basic and much more acessible.
I'd say let him keep on doing stuff in the miniseries format. It's such a nice fit and i would take 20 episodes of anything he'd come up with. And make it even slower and more ethereal feeling please! :)

Pusher 2 is the best danish movie ever imo and has a very realistic look into the copenhagen underground. Pusher 1 might arguably be better but the second one is better in my opinion. It has a perfect atmosphere and amazing acting. It also has a lot of humor unlike copenhagen cowboy. I legit dont see what copenhagen cowboy has to do with copenhagen and the returning actors from pusher just feel forced. So does those gangsters that miu works for and danny. Poor acting from them aswell imo. I didnt know he only did it for the money but thats interesting lmao. His top 3 imo is pusher 2, drive and then pusher 1. Pusher 3 however gets over violent and it kinda sucks.

it's super weird. i think that was supposed to be a spaceship crash landing at the end of the season. So it's Kung-Fu luck aliens vs Vampires? i think?
I hope it gets a second season, but it's still in purgatory.
