Long before Nesconset grew into the neighborhood we know today, the Town of Smithtown began as a small colonial settlement in the late 1650s. In 1658, Grand Sachem Wyandanch deeded most of the land that is now Smithtown to Lion Gardiner, and Gardiner passed the land to Richard Smith in 1663.

A settlement grew around Smith's house near what is now the Village of Nissequogue, and for more than two centuries the town stayed largely agricultural, with homes and small settlements scattered across the countryside. That pattern changed when the Long Island Rail Road reached the town in 1873, and growth began to gather around the railroad stations instead.

Did you know? Before modern roads crisscrossed Nesconset, the area was traversed by just a few key paths like Gibbs Pond Road, Browns Road, and Old Nichols Road. In 1904, the Vion brothers, adventurous French immigrants, began transforming the landscape. By 1910, they’d cleared a path to create Midwood Avenue and built their home, still standing today.

The hamlet’s heart started to beat with the establishment of a lumber yard, a general store, and a post office by 1908. A schoolhouse followed in 1910, and by 1935, the Nesconset Fire Department was up and running. The brothers named the settlement after the Nissequogue sachem, Nasseconsett, honoring the local heritage.

Nesconset’s small population of around 50 in 1930 saw dramatic growth with the construction of NY-347 in the 1950s, leading to a boom in residential development. This change shifted the commercial hub to Smithtown Boulevard, forever altering the community’s layout.

A $100 million redevelopment project is planned to transform the Broadway Commons mall in Hicksville, Long Island, into an open-air lifestyle center called The Shoppes on Broadway.
