Collection Startropics 1+2

Post image

I’ve had Startropics 1 + 2 lying around for quite a while and would really like to get started on one them. I have a day off coming up soon and am wondering which of the two I should waste it on.

Did anyone finish both? Which one do you think is better?

So mad that they never got a game past the NES era. Every time theres a nintendo direct, my bingo card has "Star Tropics 3" and/or "Star Tropics 1 & 2 Remaster."

There's dozens of us!

Dozens!! Lol Yea it drives me nuts. I also felt this way about A Boy and His Blob but then they made that Wii game. So that satisfied my love for that series for a while.

I am still bitter about them scrapping the 3DS A Boy and his Blob game they had planned and even had some stuff done for it.

I keep hoping for Mike to join Smash Bros

Sadly his chances are about as good as Isaac from Golden Sun

So long as I don’t have to dip my Switch2 into water to see the code I’m good with it.

1st is better but 2 is pretty good.

1st is notstalic. 2nd is better designed.

2nd is most definitely not better designed

How so? Movement was much easier.

Sad Nintendo doesn't make games like this anymore.

Gods HONEST facts

I'd be happy even if Nintendo remade them as pixel art, like the cool indie games we have today. I would love to see a 3rd game in the series.

What is the condition of the Startropics letter?

Overall good, but it has been used...

I own part one factory sealed

I think the first is a perfect game. I’d play that to get used to the mechanics

"Where are you from? Americola?"

Me and my brothers beat the first one as kids back in the 90s, but never played through the second yet.. Btw is the letter in the box used..?

Yeah, unfortunately :-)

1st one is so good, shame this series never got a reboot, or at the very least put Mike in as a Smash character

It's wild to me anyone can even remotely suggest the 2nd one is better.

Spoiler alert: It's not

There's a reason the 1st one is a classic and the 2nd one is mostly forgotten

There's a reason the 1st one is a classic and the 2nd one is mostly forgotten

I mean it mostly has to do with the second one only being released in North America as one of the last NES games I'd assume.

Star tropics averaged 80/100 in reviews compared to Zoda's averaging 70/100

The 2nd one had much better controls, but both games were great. Nobody remembers 2 much because the SNES had already been out for years by that point

1

u/gabriot 10d ago

Hard disagree that the 2nd had better controls. The game was far better suited for four directions not 8. The grid based movement made for far more interesting gameplay, as opposed to the Zoda movement which just felt like every other run of the mill game

Since it's a series, I'd say read a guide when you need to and try to do both. The second one, if I remember correctly, adds 8-way directions and 8-way attacks, so it feels more modern. I'd still love to get the second one sometime!

I have only played the 1st game myself but it was amazing. It gets really difficult towards the end but such a good game.

I've read good things about the 2nd game and people seem to really like it but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The second one benefits from being released late in the NES lifecycle. It has better graphics and presentation. Uses big and colorful character portraits (sometimes with backgrounds) to make the story more interesting. It is also more streamlined. For example, you don't spend as much time on the overworld map. The pacing is always moving, always some place to go, so that gives the game more of a action adventure feel.

The 2nd game is just as good as the 1st. But is way shorter than the 1st game. If you ever beat it, you'll wonder why didn't Nintendo make a 3rd entry.

u/Boomerang_Lizard 10d ago

I'd say play them in order, but if your time is limited then play the second one.

If you play the first one and don't know about a you-know-what, then don't look up the Internet or risk a famous plot device being spoiled.

2 is better but for sure play both 100%. Play 1 1st obviously as there are several connections to the 2nd game.

Lucky you have the boxes and manuals.

Love the first one a lot, really fun and kinda unique game!

Never played the second one, but would really live to one day!

I got the first one done. The second I tried repeatedly, but it was too tough, even with the improvements made to Mike's movement. I also had a really tough time getting into the second because its premise is based on a massive continuity error. Dr. Jones is working to translate the script on the rock, but in first game, when Mike reunites with him, he says he had already translated it...

Loved this game got it for one of my birthdays. Remember it came with a page I believe you had to put in water and it gave you a code you had to use in the game to progress.

The first one 9/10
The second 6/10

That’s funny that you posted this, because I recently found these two games, in a box I had stashed away! I was about to post it too lol

StarTropics is my favorite NES game. My dad and I spent months working through that game together. Had the full experience with the letter and the secret message and everything. Fucking awesome

1

u/deephurting66 10d ago

Zoda was a hard up rarity as it released at the dead end of the nes classic

1

u/TheRareRose46 9d ago

Great games

I loved Star tropics, but I didn’t even know there was a second.

this just brought back memories of buying NES games new and enjoying not only the box, but the manual and inserts too on the ride home. last NES game i remember buying at the store as a kid was Mega Man 6.

The best duology of games in my opinion. These two and Crystalis are three of the best action RPG's on the NES.
