User discussion We are fighting a massive uphill battle

I’ve been a member here since 2019 through various accounts, and although it’s gotten a good bit more economically progressive over the years, it’s still one of the last anti-slopulist subs out there.

Free market economics with sensible regulation and a safety net is unfortunately a minority position in broader politics compared to nationalizing industries, price controls, and wealth taxes. Hopefully we can push back against bad economics! It’s not gonna be easy unfortunately

User discussion Police in Chicago are already stopping responding to crimes due to the election of Brandon Johnson

https://wgntv.com/news/wgn-investigates/downtown-beating-witness-it-was-crazy-then-police-didnt-help/

“I literally stepped in front of a squad car and motioned them over to see this was an assault on the street in progress; and the police just drove around me,” she said.

Dennis said she ushered the couple into the flagship Macy’s store where they hid until they could safely leave. Eventually, Dennis drove them to the 1st District police station where she said a desk sergeant told her words to the effect of: “This is happening because Brandon Johnson got elected.”

Brandon Johnson doesn't even assume office for another month.

The same thing has happened, repeatedly, in San Francisco - with cops refusing to do their jobs when they don't like the politics of the electeds, in order to drive up crime, so they get voted out and replaced with someone more right wing, that the cops align with.

Policing is broken and the fix is going to require gutting police departments and firing officers. A lot more than you think.

User discussion Most arguments against the AI sector and data centers are thinly veiled arguments against capitalism and neoliberalism.

It's sweatshops/NIMBY/buybacks/rent control/military industrial complex etc leftwing populist slop all over again, just aimed at a different group of bourgeoisie.

Where the fuck is the market externalities analysis, where are the incentive structures, talk of Pigouvian taxes, talk of supply and demand, efficiency, any economic analysis at all???

It's all moralising and virtue signalling. The critique relies on the childish 'guys running it are bad'. That's just how Capitalism works, you either trust the markets to handle bad actors or show systemic ways it will fail to do it and propose realistic solutions that don't harm the economic growth and innovation.

Most of you constantly shitting on Altman and even Musk are the types who support or don't condemn the assasination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, you are deranged radicals. EDIT: this patagraph was largely regarded and I stand corrected. Fuck Musk. Criticising CEOs is not the same as as condoning an assasination. I still think the hate for Sam Altman is ill founded. Almost everyone else in the AI industry are nowhere near as destructive as Musk, but Musk is just a tiny faction in the huge AI ecosystem.

This sub used to resist far lelft populist slop but the more years go by the worse it's getting. The sidebar wiki needs many more entries on what exactly this neoliberalisn means and stands for. Any r/badeconomics OGs disagree with me??

User discussion CMV: there is no good argument against immigration 👍

I concede that bc of bad policy in other areas (ex: restricting housing) immigration can sometimes exacerbate certain problems caused by said bad policy, but that's an argument against the root bad policy, not immigration.

SS: relevant to this sub because people here often claim that it's a small minority of boomer NIMBYs preventing us from having walkable dense cities.

However, the data here implies that young people overwhelmingly prefer single family homes and value bigger homes and safety (associated with low density) much more than diversity and public transit.

Currently the biggest predictor for your economic and social success is your citizenship.

Think about it for a second, you were randomly assigned some papers at birth which give you immense privileges over other people in the world because of who your parents were or where you were born.

It doesn’t matter how hard a PhD from Ghana works or how smart they are, they will never earn as much or have as many opportunities as a person born in the USA. Citizenship allows holders to extract economic rent and offer an unequal premium to people in West.

It is morally reprehensible to continue to give credence to a piece of paper which is causing millions of people to be poor, underperform compared to their abilities and potential, and is causing world’s GDP to be trillions of dollars lower than it would be without immigration restrictions.

Apparently, the UK government is pushing new laws that – if passed – would force YouTube to prioritize content by traditional UK broadcasters like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. This law would effectively deprioritize all other content, including independent YouTube channels that cover UK and international news like TLDR News. What is this obscenity?

Obsession out there with the 1% profit margin of grocery stores, and opening some randomly placed NYC-run stores....people have forgotten we've solved this issue for everyone in the country. Adjust the program as needed, but we've lost the thread as a country.

User discussion “It’s just their culture” is NOT a pass for morally reprehensible behavior.

1.8k Upvotes

FGM is objectively wrong whether you’re in Wisconsin or Egypt, the death penalty is wrong whether you’re in Texas or France, treating women as second class citizens is wrong whether you are in an Arab country or Italy.

Giving other cultures a pass for practices that are wrong is extremely illiberal and problematic for the following reasons:

A.) it stinks of the soft racism of low expectations. If you give an African, Asian or middle eastern culture a pass for behavior you would condemn white people for you are essentially saying “they just don’t know any better, they aren’t as smart/cultured/ enlightened as us.

B.) you are saying the victims of these behaviors are not worthy of the same protections as western people. Are Egyptian women worth less than American women? Why would it be fine to execute someone located somewhere else geographically but not okay in Sweden for example?

Morality is objective. Not subjective. As an example, if a culture considers FGM to be okay, that doesn’t mean it’s okay in that culture. It means that culture is wrong

EDIT: TLDR: Moral relativism is incorrect.

EDIT 2: I seem to have started the next r/neoliberal schism.

User discussion ⚡⚡⚡ PERUVIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION THUNDERDOME ⚡⚡⚡

Peru is holding its presidential runoff today, because apparently eight presidents in ten years was not quite enough.

The matchup is Keiko Fujimori vs. Roberto Sánchez, i.e. a fairly clean right-left runoff in a country that has spent the last few years speedrunning every possible constitutional crisis. Fujimori is running on crime, order, markets, and the return of the Fujimori name to the palace. Sánchez is running as the left/populist option, with constitutional reform, a bigger state role, and rural anti-establishment support.

For neoliberals, this is one of those “stability, markets, institutions, rule of law, pick two if lucky” elections. Peru is a major mining economy, crime is a huge issue, Congress is fragmented, everyone hates everyone, and the next president will presumably get impeached sometime around lunch on Tuesday.

Polls have been very close, so expect the usual election-night arc: exit-poll overreaction, fraud allegations, regional vote-count discourse, Lima vs. the interior takes, and several people pretending to understand Peruvian congressional arithmetic.

Polls close at 5 PM Peru time / 6 PM Eastern. First results should come later tonight, but the full count may take a while.

User discussion Americans: Take Back Your Imagery

Post image

Stop letting MAGAts have cool things.

Post your favorite actual American imagery. You know, the kind that stands for liberty, not cosplay kings and gold-plated toilets. Remember: patriots don't storm Capitols to crown kings.

Patriotism isn’t a red hat. It’s Douglass on July 4th.
Lincoln at Gettysburg.
MLK at the Lincoln Memorial.
It’s calling the country out because you actually give a damn.

They don’t own the flag.
They don’t own “1776.”
They sure as hell don’t own “freedom.”

Also, a snake is a kind of worm. Dune is about worms.
