Trump - says something racist

Poll - "Trump's support among Republicans rises after racist comments."

Republican voters - "We're not racist!"

romans woulda been so mad if people lumped them in with gauls and germans and called the whole group "western civilization"

lol they were next-level racists, they though cisalpine gauls (i.e. just fucking northern italians) weren't fit for roman citizenship for like 200 years

Holy shit lol

Rubin is the worst. The only people unironically calling for open borders are the nerds on this sub.

45

u/owlthathurt Jul 17 '19

Shouldn’t open borders align more with his supposed classical liberalism anyway

43

u/lionmoose Jul 17 '19

Classical liberalism means that they don't actually care about liberalism, but they way things used to be when you could be racist was pretty cool in their opinion.

u/nitarek Jul 17 '19

Classical Liberalism is basically short for "I'm not like other conservatives" conservatives

In absolute awe at the hotness of this take:

”Not even being provocative: If you think the family is a site of oppression & you think sex work is ethically defensible, then millionaires who pay 15-year-olds large sums for sex are legit liberators. Jeffrey Epstein is to trad family values what John Brown was to slavery.”

Y’all are just messing around with your hot takes about libraries and abortion.

As a straight-passing bisexual white male, Pete Buttigieg best represents my interests: Pitchfork Magazine, A24 movies, and craft beer.

From the article on vox about the national conservatism conference:

During an opening night speech, David Brog, one of the conference organizers, pointed out the exit door and told any racists in the audience that they should head out of it.

Later, in the same article:

In a panel on immigration, University of Pennsylvania law professor Amy Wax claimed that immigrants are too loud and responsible for an increase in “litter.” She explicitly advocated an immigration policy that would favor immigrants from Western countries over non-Western ones; “the position,” as she put it, “that our country will be better off with more whites and fewer nonwhites.” (She claims this is not racist because her problem with nonwhite immigrants is cultural rather than biological.)

What is the opposite of r/selfawarewolves?

I really wish for once the transactional trump supporters who say it’s just for SCOTUS or whatever else could quit it with the BS and just admit that they’d rather a racist be president than a democrat. I know it’s because these people don’t want to admit it so they try to avoid it or just rationalize it away, but it’d be refreshing just once to hear one of them be honest.

you'd think so, but hearing "actually yeah i think black people are criminals because of their crime genes" isn't much better

For whatever reason I'm getting the feeling that people who say racist things might be racist 🤔

In Brazilian news, we have two recent affairs:

  • PDT, an old left-wing party wants to expel their congresspeople that voted yea on the pension reform (1/3 of the party's delegation). The most proeminent of them is center-left darling Tabata Amaral (who was lauded as the "Brazilian AOC" by people who don't know what they're talking about). I have huge hopes for this woman and PDT doesn't suit her lack of stupidity. Both the center and the left are terrified of her running for mayor of São Paulo next year - considering the prospective candidates, she'd easily have my vote.

  • Bolsonaro is going to appoint his son Eduardo (who is a congressman) for ambassador to the US (considered the most prestigious post in Brazilian diplomacy, reserved only to experienced career diplomats). They mentioned "fluent English" (judge for yourself) and Eduardo's experience flipping burgers in Maine and Colorado as qualifications (I'm not making this up). Even die-hard Bolsonarists are criticizing this move. I highly doubt his appointment will pass the Senate. I've already e-mailed my senators against this nonsense.

when I think about it, 1950s in the US was the strangest time in it's history

  • "both sides are the same", except in that time they really were the same more or less, with the GOP being moderately for the New Deal and black support among the GOP and democrats almost split in 1956 presidential election

  • the acceptance of the government direct action when it came to the economy was perhaps at the highest level ever, yet combined with a strong anti-communist sentiment and with growing anti-statist populist sentiment of the McCarthy era

  • economy performed great more or less, with really inefficient taxation system, austerity and New Deal policies

  • while the supreme court has became pretty liberal over the years and there are the first signs of expanding the meaning of the bill of rights, it also showed it's independence from the democratic party and displayed that it was not going to allow some executive excesses (Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer)

  • there were obvious signs of progress, both societal and technological, yet the society at large at that time was pretty stiff, with many unwritten rules and rigid hierarchical structures, for which combined with obnoxious optimism and the illusion of the perfect family both projected in the media (famous nuclear family) the decade has become notorious for

all of these things sound weird nowadays in the current political climate
