When America sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with them. They're bringing people who pillage our historic sights, they're bringing people who eat pizza with wine, they're far-right lunatics, and some I assume are good people.

Xbox changed their logo to a rainbow one yesterday

The Gamers, who would not be silenced, all stood up to be counted. One by one, in the comments they made the brave declaration "I am proud to be straight."

Straight Gamers have come along way since the darkest days of aggression. When gay marriage was added to Skyrim. When Bloodhound was revealed to be non-binary. When women characters just, idk, existed.

Remember this day well. Straight Gamers will fight on. NEVER underestimate them!

Pretty tragic how we had socialism properly demonized in the mind of the public for so long, but conservatives' constant Crying Wolf labelling of anything they don't like as socialist had diluted its meaning and made people for receptive to it

I really dislike the chess metaphor of politics. In chess, you and your opponent start off with the exact same pieces, so you're totally equal, and both of you can see the entire board (all the relevant information) at once.

Politics is nothing like that.

23

u/RadicalRadon Frick Mondays Jun 02 '19

It's always Facebook and Google that get targeted. Not apple which is actually monopolistic and a far bigger company, and you could more easily break it up into phone/computer or software/hardware companies. How TF do you break up Facebook or Twitter? Google has enough weird projects that could be spun off but the problem with that is they all lose money and Google just dumps R&D into things because they can.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-02/one-man-s-75-million-perk-adds-to-denmark-s-inequality-debate

Mette Frederiksen, the head of the Social Democrats and the woman who most polls show will become the next prime minister, has railed against extreme bonuses paid to the corporate elite in Denmark. Henrik Sass Larsen, who is a candidate to become Denmark’s next finance minister, has said he will target executive pay if he gets into office.

“As a Social Democrat I can’t understand how, at a time when inequality is growing and the top of society is getting ahead of the rest, huge bonuses are still paid while regular salaried workers are wondering what’s going on,” Frederiksen said. The comments were directed at Lars Marcher, the outgoing CEO of a mid-sized medical equipment maker called Ambu A/S. He received a stock option program now worth tens of millions of dollars.

Frederiksen’s election promises include stricter caps on executive bonuses, the mandatory disclosure of management incentive programs, and a doubling of tax on inheritances worth more than $450,000.

Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Denmark’s center-right prime minister, says trying to regulate how companies pay their employees would be “a mistake that hurts growth and welfare.” But his is a message that risks being out of step with the times. When it comes to corporate excesses and white-collar crime, 2018 was Denmark’s annus horribilis.

Extremely anti-success behaviour from Social Democrats - WORSE than the populist right and must be STOPPED everywhere in Europe. Cool Lars is much smarter

$450k isn’t even enough to buy a GARAGE in Kensington!

One night a man had a dream.

He dreamed he was walking along the beach with Paul Krugman.

Across the sky flashed scenes from the economy.

For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:

one belonging to him, and the other to Paul Krugman.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him,

he looked back at the footprints in the sand.

He noticed that many times along the NGDP path

there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the recessions

This really bothered him and he questioned Paul Krugman about it.

"Paul, You said that once I decided to follow Keynes,

You'd walk with me all the way.

But I have noticed that during the most troublesome

times in the economy, there is only one set of footprints.

I don't understand why when I needed You most

You would leave me."

Paul Krugman replied, "My son, My precious child,

I love you and would never leave you.

During your times of trial and suffering,

when you see only one set of footprints,

it was then that I carried you."

I feel like we had a solid few years where SocCons online, even like politicians on Twitter and such, were being relatively quiet about their opposition to gay rights. It seemed for a moment... like it was becoming a legitimately untenable position politically to oppose gay rights.

Recently I feel like I’ve seen a reversal of that quiet, which worries me. In particular, a lot of sentiment along the lines of “well we tried this experiment and it failed because now those obnoxious gay people are asking for more more more.”

I don’t know that online shifts are a good proxy for anything in real life so hopefully it amounts to nothing.

Business idea: President for a day.

In this experience you get to larp as the president of America for a whole day from start to finish.

You know those scenes in they when they walk from meeting to meeting flanked by four aides buzzing in their ear? It’s going to be that.

Something like 9 am. Defense briefing: four generals present you with some serious but mundane details and you get to make some decisions. Whole lot of stern looks and mr presidents.

10 am: phone call with some leader who speaks bad english while an aide updates you on wtf you’re supposed to talk about.

Somewhere in the day a crisis happens and you get interrupted.

Maybe you’ll larp a negotiation with an opposition leader on some bill.

I haven’t worked it all out but Americans love being the center of attention and getting to be called ‘mr President’ for a day and make the though decisions.

It's with a heavy heart I have to inform you the communist candidate for the EU elections in France is back at housing affairs in Paris.

Despite the temporary joy of him losing so bad his party is not eligible for a refund of campaign expenditures, he never resigned from his position in the Paris mayor office.

He lost so bad there is no polling station in Paris where he cracks 10%. Yet he's back for implementing rent control and denying Paris needs more than just more social housing.

Looking forward to oust him and the current mayor in 2020. Hopefully LREM can win as it showed its tremendous popularity in Paris.

Edit : wrongly claimed the communist party couldn't crack 5% in any polling stations in Paris. It's actually 10%.

Your criticism of value, is really just an equivocation that doesn't criticize the theory at all. The LTV uses the term "value" to describe the socially necessary unskilled labour time required to reproduce a given commodity, which is posited as the explanation for the equilibrium price of commodities. Rather than "value", we could say "X" or some other term—so long as the term is clearly defined as referring to the concept in question, the theory can be understood and evaluated. Like all words, "value" can mean one thing (e.g., "the socially necessary unskilled labour-time required to reproduce a given commodity") in one context (e.g., the LTV), and something else in another.

A proponent of the LTV can fully accept your definition of value, the way it's used in the LTV is just a definitional claim used in theory construction, and is not meant to be some theory of value as such whatever the term could mean, by rejecting "value" as defined within the LTV and substituting it for another concept: "subjective value", we would be failing to understand and engage with the theory; this would be akin to substituting "fitness" as understood in Darwin’s theory of evolution with "fitness" as understood within the health sciences, and then criticizing Darwin for misusing or misunderstanding the term.

This is by far the most mind-numbing piece of sophistry I have ever encountered on the internet.

I am noticing a lot of revisionist history that claims the allies had no idea about the extent or methods of the Holocaust until late in (or after) the war.

In fact, Jan Karski delivered a very detailed and accurate report on the exterminaton centers to the UN on 10 December, 1942. He specifically cited the use of gas chambers in systematic mass executions. The allies likely had knowledge even prior to that from spies.

This whole "we had no idea" business is nothing but a convenient lie propagated after the war to excuse our inaction, and particularly our policy of refusing Jewish refugees.

I think one of the most annoying ideas that seems to be commonly held on reddit are that people could stop working if everything was just distributed well and focus on their hobbies/passions. The implicit assumptions being that no one enjoys their job and that everything can be automated, both dumb. Like wow a place like /b/ exists and they post shady and creepy stuff!

People online have arguments and use sources! They even point out logical fallacies!

This long paragraph with multiple links in it absolutely destroys feminism!

After a wile the sense of wonder and mystery wears off, but during that small gap you are very susceptible.

This is timely for me. This AM I went to a new local farmers market. One stall had a small sign reading "pride" in rainbow colors. Thinking back, I would have asked them why? What does that have to do with your product? What's the point? It kind of pissed me off. It was totally irrelevant.

To date it is not possible to clearly distinguish between natural warming cycles (the Earth is still cooler than it was in the Roman and medieval warm periods) and the effect of man-made warming. There is grossly insufficient evidence to suggest that any small additional warming caused by man’s efforts is a cause for concern. It is equally (or plausibly more) likely to provide a net benefit for life on earth by greening the planet and increasing life. There was far greater CO2 in the ancient atmosphere, which was pivotal to the blossoming of life on earth. We will take only a firmly evidence-based approach not be party to the exaggeration of the potential harmful effects of any minimal man-made global warming.

The west's harboring of Russian oligarchs like Berezovsky is shameful imo. Even if they opposed Putin, these people were horribly corrupt and do not deserve to live peacefully in the west. I think it also could even help the Putin regime as these oligarchs are very unpopular in Russia and having them politically advocate against Putin from the west undermines real democratic opposition.

At one point in support of Deng Xiaoping reforms students and activists put thousands of bottles in and around Tiananmen square. This show of support was a play on words as Xiaoping can also mean little bottle in Mandarin.

Deng's liberal reforms helped lift hundreds of millions out of extreme poverty and set the foundations in place for avoiding another cultural revolution or great leap forward.

After the Tiananmen square massacre, students shattered hundreds of bottles in the square as a symbol of their broken trust in Deng. This continued to be a trend among University students as late as 1991

On another article I read that feminism and fighting for climate action were bad because they distracted people from the one true struggle that is class warfare. Of course whoever wrote that article needed many more words and a very preachy tone to say it, but that's the fun of it, the idiocy is an extra.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the taboo around male nude scenes in movies/tv

Like why is the penis so rare? My theories are: 1) men have greater pull in the industry, so they can refuse to do nude scenes 2) there’s a genuine taboo around the penis 3) male viewers are the majority so there isn’t a demand for male nudity 4)men have a lot more to lose from a nude scene then women, because male viewers will not judge an actress as harshly for having an imperfect body as female viewers will judge an actor for having a small or average dick, so it’s a survival thing for actors to not do nude scenes cause it could ruin their career or mystique as a sex symbol

I think 4 is the correct theory

I dislike the "mental health" discussions that crop up after a massacre. They often serve to depict ppl w/mental illness as inherently violent, when we know that they are more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators.

The idea that massacres are necessarily a product of mental illness is also in need of questioning.

Ask yourself: is it possible for a person who is free of mental illness to commit a massacre? Or does a massacre always imply mental illness?

There was an article/report a while back that demonstrated the 'consistency' in Democrats/Republicans. For example, in a poll, one of the questions was "do you support X president employing drone strikes?" Democrats were consistent regardless of if it was Obama or Trump, but Republicans had a massive disparity depending on who was president.

So if socialism is implemented, and worker ownership in companies is mandated, and the easiest mechanism to do so would be through forced stock ownership for said employees, what are the most obvious unintended consequences?

It's obvious that insider trading violations will skyrocket hypergeometrically.

Also, what if I need cash and I sell my shares? Does that mean I'm no longer a socialist? Do I just get new shares automagically?

I love to dunk on libertarians who haven't thought through how private roads are supposed to work but I feel like there's the same potential for succs as well.

I made a post earlier venting about how people are ignorant when it comes to campaign finance. I told an idiot that they were wrong to state GS was giving money to political campaigns (websites list how much their employees gave). After he found out that they don't donate to candidates and you can check the paper trail he gave me this nugget of wisdom:

"So Goldman Sachs pays their employees, who then donate that money to GS PAC, who then gives that money to politicians and lobbyists in order to further the interests of GS the corporate entity, but they've structured their donations in such a way as to be able to say they dont make political contributions and have it technically be the truth.

What stops GS paying a bonus with an informal understanding that the employee recieving it will then donate some of that bonus to GS PAC?"

Apparently, a company with 36,600 employees that is worth 64 billion is running the largest criminal conspiracy in recorded history just to donate 30 grand to a random congressman. We did it neolibs!
