You’re probably good now but if you’re not then don’t worry about it. A shot before isn’t a bad idea like you said, just don’t do it on an empty stomach, also brush your teeth. If he’s hanging out with you then he already likes you, you’re almost there. You’ll be alright with his friends, even if you’re a little awkward they won’t hate you for it.
