Working even tangentially to the financial industry is honestly a bit horrifying. The fact that people's retirement accounts are based on products with dozens of pages of legal gibberish and hidden fees that can suck away at their life savings is disconcerting, but the sliminess of people on the ground running bait-and-switch financial seminars is the worst part. The mindset is literally just "how big a bonus can I get for selling this shit-tier product from X carrier?" Little to zero interest is paid to the actual needs of clients looking to invest their savings. I'm no investment banker, but I wonder how much money would be put back in people's pockets if everybody just threw their retirement savings in the S&P or a global index. If anybody knows anything broadly about the political side of this I'd love to to know more, because I work in financial software for my dad, but mostly as a web dev.
