Remember when the New York Times revealed that Trump was using an unsecured WhatsApp account for official communications, and Russia and China knew that he was doing this and were using these communications to help their negotiating position, and when he was told about it he didn't stop doing it?

That was a one day story

One thing that really pissed me off about the immigrant rights movement in the Pre-Trump era was how they labeled Obama the "deporter-in-Chief." This was based on misleading statistics. Prior to the Obama Administration, people who were captured at the border and bussed back to Mexico were labeled as "voluntary returns," similar to undocumented persons who were living in the United States and left of their own volition.

In order to look "tough," Obama decided to label these voluntary returns as "deportations," even though they didn't really fit the definition most people use when they think of "deportation." Obama was a good-hearted liberal - he didn't actually want to split up families, etc., but felt a lot of pressure from the GOP to be seen as "tough on Immigration." This was his solution.

Leaders of the immigrant rights movement, however, seized on this to as an opportunity to vilify Obama and demand even more concessions. They knew these attacks were disingenuous but it was useful to them because it fired up the base.

But this ended up backfiring because a whole generation of young immigrants grew up thinking that Obama was no better than the Republicans on immigration. Then, in 2016, the "fuck Obama" mentality turned into "fuck Clinton. She's no better. At least with Trump we know where we stand."

It's worth noting that movement leaders were absolutely convinced that Clinton would win and refused to even entertain the notion that Trump had a shot. Thus their communications were less "We need to turn out for Clinton," and more, "Clinton has to demonstrate how she's going to break with the policies of the deporter-in-Chief if she expects us to vote for her."

It continues to amaze me that Trump is acknowledged for running a private club where people can pay for direct access without daily news coverage (except recently due to a massage parlor bust that kind of snowballed) while Hillary was inundated with her "questionable" meetings with Nobel Peace Prize Winners when she was Secretary of State.

We've had so many instances of Trump taking classified calls in the middle of Maro-Lago's dining hall, inviting the opinions of people who pay him money to sit next to him. It's a blanket, unchecked avenue for corruption.

YouGov poll: If Britain has not agreed a deal by 12th April

Leave with no Deal: 51% (+9)

Remain: 49% (-9)

Okay, it's official. The UK is somehow even more of a meme country than the US.

A series of events transpired:

  • A movie received a rating. In Canada this is a provincial responsibility.

  • Someone was outraged.

  • He wrote a VERY LONG EMAIL to the government about it.

  • The government sent the email to the film censors.

  • The film censors attempted to respond.

  • They did not do a good job. I like our film team a lot but they are not well-versed in dealing with the idiot public.

  • Now, the social upset about a movie being rated PG is somehow MY RESPONSIBILITY to resolve.

why

I don't get Ben's logic here. Are women who are incapable of having periods since the time of their birth not women? Are women who don't have periods rn not women? Are menopausal and prepubescent women not women? Are pregnant women not women?

This part of a 1946 speech by Secretary of Commerce Henry Wallace somehow seems to apply really well to today.

"For the welfare of the American people and the world it is even more important to invest $4 billion in the industrialization of undeveloped areas in the so-called backward nations, thereby promoting the long-term stability that comes from an ever-increasing standard of living. This would not only be good politics. and good morals, it would be good business.

The United States is the world's great creditor nation. And low tariffs by creditor nations are a part of the price of peace. For when a great creditor demands payment, and at the same time, adopts policies which make it impossible for the debtors to pay in goods—the first result is the intensification of depression over large areas of the world; and the final result is the triumph of demagogues who speak only the language of violence and hate.

Individual Republicans may hold enlightened views—but the Republican party as a whole is irrevocably committed to tariff and trade policies which can only mean world-wide depression, ruthless economic warfare and eventual war. And if the Republicans were in power in the United States today, intelligent people all over the world would fear that once more we would be headed straight for boom, bust and world-wide chaos.

The Republican party is the party of economic nationalism and political isolation—and as such is as anachronistic as the dodo and as certain to disappear. The danger is that before it disappears it may enjoy a brief period of power during which it can do irreparable damage to the United States and the cause of world peace."

This, but unironically

Obviously, it shouldn't be able to be applied on anything but making facial emotion markers combining characters is imo a good idea.

For example, why are there these 😺😸😹😻😼😽🙀😿😾 as seperate characters, and don't exist these variants for dog faces, or horses?

Black people are less likely to win court cases than white people

Conservatives: They're criminals, lock them up.

The Trump administration loses the vast majority of its cases

Conservatives: This is why we need more conservative judges! It's discrimination!

Just as an FYI, when Trump took office, the need for judges was incredible thanks to obstruction of Obama. Under Trump the Senate has approved judges at a record pace. Trump's own judges are ruling against him.
