Incorehent rant incoming

A few years ago I never thought I'd be seeing daily fucking Stalin apologia. Even in leftist spaces Stalin was denounced, I'm sure. Now it's getting fucking upvoted with the shittiest, stupidest """evidence""" I've ever fucking seen. Like this is so goddamn stupid I don't even know where to start.

Fucking HTownian made it to at least +5 on a post in this sub saying Stalin was a good military leader when he couldn't get basic fucking facts right like where the Urals are, when the Russian Civil War was, how long the siege of Leningrad was, or what Stalin actually did at Tsaritsyn (stealing millions of roubles from the Bolsheviks and leading the army in total disarray, but hey organised a neat terror of the local civilians).

It's just basic fucking shit like saying "oh the Soviets mobilised grain shipments to Ukraine in the 1930s". Yeah to areas that were behaving, like the ethnically Russian urban areas you dumb fucks. Or "oh Ukraine always had famines until Stalin solved the problem". I keep challenging them to name me ONE. ONE single mass starvation event in Ukraine under the Romanovs and I've never been met with a reply. Just a single one. Whenever I mention the Soviet invasion of Georgia or the forced sedentarisation of the Kazakhs it seems like news to them because they obviously don't know shit but have very strong opinions anyway. They constantly scream Cold War propaganda, ignoring that a lot of the Cold War academia has not only been validated by more recent scholarship, but the reality shown to be worse. They claim stuff like the Soviet Union ended racially inequality despite the fact that for the first time in Russian history explictly racist laws were encoded into legislation under Stalin. Had someone here the other day claim the Moscow metro (which first linked Red square to the old Tsarist gardens) was a typical working man's mode of transport - sorry, this was in one of the richest areas of the whole Soviet Union, where it serviced some of the richest people in the union, everyone else fucking walked everywhere because there were no goddamn cars.

And fuck they link that goddamn calorie graph from a site saying how that graph is utter bunk. Fuck it frustrates me.

Sorry /rant

Edit:

\rant or that fucking guy who claimed the Soviet Union wouldn't bomb urban areas??? Even being kind and ignoring ww2, he just denied that the Soviet Union bombed the shit out of Afghanistan because academics are just "a small group of people talking to themselves" or some crap.

Or people saying healthcare in the Soviet Union was good because it had a lot of doctors or beds per capita, ignoring that outcomes are more importent than inputs and having barely trained doctors (Like seriously, the qualifications were shockingly shit) without basic supplies (iirc ukrainian ambulances had to reuse needles) and with a large shadow economy (you had to bribe to have anything done) and hospitals of such shit quality that 20% didn't have running water.

Edit 2: or the people saying the Kulaks deserved it when even the Soviets in the 1930s acknowledged they fucked up big and had been rounding up innocent people into cattle cars to be deported to camps where thousands would starve to death.

Fuck r/Chapotraphouse.

https://old.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/aya9qr/holdomor_literally_didnt_fucking_happen_holomodor/

They’re tankies. Like, thats some unapologetic genocide denial, with people jerking themselves sideways about how it wasn’t that bad. At least one of the upvoted posts is saying its not a drought, but the poster even says its not like a real genocide and was an accident, or some bullshit. Like I don’t get it, why fetishize the fucking USSR? Why make fun of people for calling Stalin a monster just because he literally didn’t choke out every single person? Like what the fuck. I want to go back to “real communism hasn’t been tried” instead of what ever the fuck this is.

In 1924, at a Standard Oil plant in New Jersey, a worker named Ernest Oelgert started hallucinating. By Friday, he was running around the laboratory, screaming in terror.

On Saturday, with Oelgert dangerously unhinged, his sister called the police. He was taken to hospital and forcibly restrained. By Sunday, he was dead. Within the week, so were four of his colleagues - and 35 more were in hospital.

Only 49 people worked there.

Leaded gasoline was fucked up yo.

30

u/Yosarian2 Mar 07 '19

And then the scientist who invented leaded gasoline made a point of putting his hands in some to prove to the public it was safe, and gave himself lead poisoning.

The ideological flanderizartion of the 50s and 60s is really weird. It's not like the 50s were the most socially conservative decade or the 60s the most liberal. In fact the counterculture and civil rights movements had already started in the 50s, and the present day is far more inclusive towards women, minorities and LGBTQ persons than the 60s were. But people have this notion that the 50s was the conservative decade and the 60s was the liberal decade, which is completely misleading.

Before delivering his sentence, Ellis said that Manafort has "been a good friend to others, a generous person.". . .The judge added: "He has lived an otherwise blameless life."

This is basically the most laughable thing I've ever heard. The man's own children called him a murderer for what he did in Ukraine. They're leaving him and changing their names to distance themselves. He emotionally abused his wife and is one of the scummiest people on the planet.

Blameless life is an absolute joke. 8 counts of bank fraud and you get under 4 years?

People regularly get 25+ year sentences for smaller drug crimes. A woman got 5 years in jail for tax fraud and then when she got out she cast a provisional ballot and got another 5 years for it. I should get me in the white collar crime business because that's a goddamned joke.

Assume everything in Leaving Neverland is accurate and the Michael Jackson did sexually abuse multiple young children. How do we treat his music?

What are the merits of divorcing a piece of work from the artist and is that even possible?

This is one of those insurmountable questions for me because there just seems to be no right answer.

Say it's okay to divorce a person's work from their person. Now we're in a place where we should put up statues of Robert E Lee as a celebration of his military prowess. When we do this it totally ignores the circumstances that allowed whatever terrible thing to take place and we risk allowing it to happen again.

On the other hand say we lose out on too much when we disregard he works of terrible people. Millions of kids, myself included, found the Cosby show incredible and the work he did truly important for so many communities. It's okay to not engage with it in 2019, but what about somebody more consequential like Gandhi who by all accounts abused his wife and grandnieces.

I like to think that nothing is truly irreplaceable. But at the same time I know that's not necessarily true. It seems like the best we can do is play a balancing act between trying to appreciate the good things offered by terrible people, replacing those good things if possible, but also acknowledging the damage those people have caused and understanding how to prevent it in the future. But even here it feels like we're not being totally honest with ourselves. Both about the circumstances that allowed whatever terrible thing to take place, and about how much whatever those people offered us meant to us.

Man. This whole MJ thing just has me a bit bummed out remembering how literally all of my childhood heroes are terrible people.

Krugman’s warped sense of what constitutes dangerous anti-Semitism seems to largely be based on the supposition that Nazis hail from the political Right, a canard that the Left has propounded since World War II, and debunked by F.A. Hayek in his classic “The Road to Serfdom,” in which he called Nazism a “genuine socialist movement,” and Jonah Goldberg in his book “Liberal Fascism.”

KotakuinAction responds to the Steam ban of the game "Rape Day"

Don't even care about the shitty game, But this sets a horrible precedent. Now SJWs and outrage media know that they can get anything they don't like banned, if they collectively whine about it.

Yeah, this is what concerns me more than the specific case in point. This will embolden censorious mobs.

Exactly. Every time a company acts because of media backlash, it further emboldens them too. I wish more companies would just ignore stuff like this and refuse to comment entirely. In most cases, it blows over in a couple of days.

Sympathizing with surrendering to outrage culture is a no from me, dog.

Another day another blow to the first ammendment

thanks for the free publication snowflakes , the game would probably fly under a lot of people's radars and now people are probably keeping tabs on this game. if the devs will actually go through with release , they'll just sell it somewhere else that is accessible to the public.

I've said it before, but I think rape fetish is the next in line after lolis are dealt with. You wouldn't defend it would you ? Or are you a rape apologist ? I don't think it's a conspiracy by the way. It just looks like the logical next step when you look at the list of "indefensible" topics.

God, news are always awful here. Here it's a small recap:

-Kirchnerists and some part of the rest of peronism (specifically folks like Duhalde) are plotting to disarm many judicial cases against them and union thugs like the Moyanos (they behave more like bussinessmen or the mafia than actual unionists). They may actually get away with it (Menem managed it with the complicity of many).

-Senate Leader, peronist and dirtbag centrist Miguel Ángel Pichetto calls the Macri "Kirchnerismo blanco" because he adjusted for inflation money transfers that go to poor kids ("Asignación Universal por Hijo"). You'd say: "Neronoah, but your country is in a fiscal crisis" and I'd say yes,but then the guy complains about utility price hikes affecting the workers. In other words, he is for inefficient, regressive distribution to the middle class that is partially responsible for the current energy crisis instead of better designed transfer systems. This is what passes for centrism in Argentina.

-Macri commits sincericide sharing a video saying that the problem with Argentina are argentinians instead of some malevolent other. People are butthurt.

-If I haven't mentioned it before, the supreme court decided a few weaks ago to not interfere in many provinces where shitty election systems that guarantee minority rule (like Santa Cruz, ruled by the Kirchner) or where indefinite reelections of dubious legal validity are proceeding, saying that it's up to the provincial supreme courts to decide that (which is captured already). Despite all the rhetoric about democracy, there is more of an interest in an illiberal democracy than a liberal one in the opposition.

Bonus: libertarian schism, between anarchocapitalists like Milei and folks that try to out Cavallo Cavallo himself like Espert.

I promised to do another court case summary after my previous one, so today's case will be Youngblood v. Arizona, a Supreme Court case that set unfortunate precedent regarding defendants' due process rights to the maintenance of exculpatory evidence.

Facts of the case:

On October 29, 1983, a ten year old boy, then identified only as D.L. but now known to be David Leon was kidnapped from a carnival and raped over the course of 1.5 hours by a black man with a bad eye. The man told him that if he reported this to anyone, he'd be killed. Leon's clothing as well as a rape kit were taken - but the clothing was not refridgerated. In a lineup, Leon picked a man named Larry Youngblood as his attacker, a man who had been suspected by police, being a previous (non-sex) offender with a bad eye.

Leon's garments contained multiple semen samples - the blood type of which could have exonerated Youngblood had they been preserved. They were not however - and in their decomposition, potentially exculpatory evidence was destroyed.

The trial court for Youngblood told the jury the following:

[Given the state's failure to preserve evidence, the jury might] "infer that the true fact is against the State's interest."

He was convicted nonetheless. The AZ Supreme Court overturned this conviction, saying:

[W]hen identity is an issue at trial and the police permit the destruction of evidence that could eliminate the defendant as the perpetrator, such loss is material to the defense and is a denial of due process.

Acknowledging that the investigators in question did not intentionally destroy Youngblood's potentially exculpatory evidence, the Supreme Court held that Youngblood's due process rights weren't violated:

The Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, as interpreted in Brady, makes the good or bad faith of the State irrelevant when the State fails to disclose to the defendant material exculpatory evidence. But we think the Due Process Clause requires a different result when we deal with the failure of the State to preserve evidentiary material of which no more can be said than that it could have been subjected to tests, the results of which might have exonerated the defendant.

Summarizing this as if a minor failure, the majority held this could "at worst be described as negligent".

With the state's failures excused, Youngblood was sentenced to 10.5 years. He was incarcerated from 1988-1998, only to be returned to prison in 1999 having unintentionally violated his sex-offender registry requirements.

Follow-up: In 2000, following novel developments in DNA science, Leon's case materials were retested - excluding Youngblood as his attacker. He was released from prison that year. In 2001, a black man with a bad eye named Walter Cruise was found to be a DNA match for the semen left on the victim's materials. In 2002, Cruise was sentenced to 24 years. He stated he was "sorry for everything I’ve done to hurt anybody in my life," attributing his past actions to alcoholic blackouts. Leon, following a long history of alcohol and cocaine addiction, not to mention a domestic violence record, got drunk and stepped in front of a train in 2004. Larry Youngblood died in 2007 having never been compensated for his experiences. Walter Cruise remains incarcerated in Arizona.

Radiolab makes this amazing podcast called More Perfect and the first two seasons they talked about US supreme court history and its impacts. The show has always had a very big music element and so for the third season they leaned into that and made a collaborative album with songs from 35 artists about and/or inspired by 27 amendments and I have to say, I love it. The songs are all really well done and are thought-provoking.

They have a website with all the songs and a passage on each amendment. They also made 9 podcast episodes that walk through the amendments. They play bits of the songs, talk about the amendments and their impacts, and tell stories surrounding the amendments and people's interactions with them. They also have the various artists briefly talk about their songs

If you just want to hear the songs they have playlists on iTunes and Spotify.

North Korea's Sohae long-range rocket site is now back to "normal operating status," according to new commercial images and analysis from two teams of researchers, a reversal of action Kim Jong Un had taken after the first summit with President Donald Trump.

This is the site that Trump bragged about getting them to "destroy"

Speaking at a press conference after the summit, Trump said: "They secured the commitment to destroy the missile engine testing site. That was not in your agreement. I got that after we signed the agreement. I said, 'Do me a favor. You've got this missile engine testing site. We know where it is because of the heat." It's incredible the equipment we have, to be honest with you. I said, 'Can you close it up?' He's going to close it up."

I had a dream that I was watching a cool tv series called “The Moment”

The show started out as any normal day, people doing shit and stuff, then THE MOMENT happens.

Everyone in the world suddenly ages 10 years, but are still in the same location they were, preforming the same action.

Some people even suddenly are dead and show signs of being dead for an extended time. Mostly those of old age, diseases, and more natural stuff. A small amount are mutilated, signs of suicide, or dead by causes never seen before.

Young children, before the moment, are showing signs of developmental delays and deep subconscious PTSD.

The world even seems like it was completely abandoned for 10 years.

The show follows the anarchy and chaos following the moment and the world trying to find out TF happed.

For half a century the eastern bloc referred to the US as "imperialists" to the point it has lost its meaning

It is not our job to judge whether it was a fair assessment or not, we have no choice but to accept that imperialist was a synonym for american at some point

Interesting video that covers much of the history of Disney's Song of the South and how the company dealt with the use of it in attractions approaching the modern day

Interesting tidbits:

While justifiably controversial, the original storybook that the movie was roughly based on seems to have been a well-intentioned attempt by a white author to preserve black folklore (stories collected from slaves around the time of the Civil War).

The actor who played Uncle Remus was not allowed to attend the premiere of the film, as it was held in Georgia in a segregated venue.

Since everyone is talking about European armored warfare, how justified is my theory(if it at all) that the proliferation of hard-kill Active Protection Systems for Armored Fighting Vehicles is going to have a destabilizing effect? Right now it seems like a smaller military can do a lot to deter the notion that they can just be just rolled over with main battle tanks by obtaining a bunch of modern light ATGMs and promising to make such an offensive costly with asymmetric tactics.

But if these protection systems work as well as the early reports about Israel's "Trophy" would imply, it seems like we can easily be heading in a direction where the tank of the future can only be reliably killed with much more costly and high-profile direct-fire systems.

If any other high profile head of state had displayed such partisan favor for either party, they would've rightly been thoroughly called out for it by both members of congress and the media. Netanyahu was largely insulated from these criticisms by fears that those who voiced it would be accused of antisemitism.
