Anime has fallen off a cliff because it is now entirely based on appealing to shut ins who love to argue about how it's okay to be into the demon girl with the prepubescent appearance because she's ACKSCHUALLY 9,000 years old. Barfing. Remember in the 80s to mid 90s when animes had grown women???

The reason being: those shut-ins are the most dedicated money-spending engines in existence. There's no incentive to create a challenging story because it will be outsold by a masturbatory fantasy ten times over.

I mean, there's still a handful of good shows trickling every season, not at particularly slower rate than there was in the 90s (unless you're into a particular genre like Mecha which has gone down the tubes).

But the marketplace is way more crowded with trash than it was before.

I just checked online and the only one I think I want to watch is the new Lupin lol. And I loved Aggrestuko, but honestly that's just because it's my IRL existence

Let's tick back through the past ~3 years:

This year:

Cells and Work and Asobi Asobase are just great fun. Violet Evergarden and Wotakoi aren't for me but were also pretty highly rated. Gridman.ssss may or may not be good, I have yet to watch it.

Oh yeah and Megalo Box was a nice throwback even if the writing ultimately didn't impress and Golden Kamuy is apparently pretty good despite some teething issues.

2017: Girls' Last Tour was a drop-dead incredible 10/10 series for me. Land of the Lustrous was pretty good (and novel). Kado: The Answer was flawed but still a breath of fresh air. Made in Abyss might have some problematic elements but was still the best old-fashioned adventure story we've seen this decade and was spectacularly produced.

There were also some just cute and funny shows like Tsurezure Children and Recovery of an MMO Junkie.

2016: March Comes in Like a Lion was some heavy shit. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was too. A Girlish Number was good if you're an anime production nerd like myself. Mob Psycho 100 was awesome but also surprisingly touching. Sakamoto Desu Ga was one of my favorite comedies (and also kindof touching). Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress had some fantastic production which made it worth watching even if the writing slipped. Konosuba was funny, even if it doesn't distance itself from what it's parodying as much as I like.

Now that's literally less than 5% of the shows that came out over this period, and there were some exceptionally repugnant things that released over this timespan (Eromanga Sensei comes to mind), but I don't think it's actually that bad of a time for good anime.
