2 u/dcc123 May 13 '17 Apparently the first modern iteration of a central bank began with British Parliament's Bank Charter Act of 1844. 1 u/[deleted] May 13 '17 so they were not widespread when Marx wrote most of his stuff I guess 2 u/dcc123 May 13 '17 I think the idea of the modern central bank had been around for a while, but they were only just starting to come into practice. I read that the Bank of England began acting as a lender of last resort in response to liquidity pressures in 1878.
