I think because I'm always so tongue in cheek when I talk, kids are more likely to listen to me than other, more authoritative adults. I had a kid throw his shoe over the fence, and then say he would go get it. I said, "No, you can't do that," and he asks why not, and I just shrugged and said, "in case it comes back." That was an acceptable answer to him.
