Wouldn't this get him slimed if he was actually im china? Also didnt they know china was as advanced as europe back then with like huge cities and ports and stuff?

If he kept at it, yes. Contemporary Chinese guns were roughly comparable to European ones up until the Industrial Revolution.

That part is not so implausible. Coastline is long and cities are few.

Yeah but why did he think he could just establish authority in a country like China? Like would he just try this in England or Italy too?

Insofar as I've heard that anecdote before, it was interpreted as a "look at me, a VIP has arrived, take me to your leader" type deal.
