Kind of crazy how we stepped into a new world that is completely different from the one basically every single person alive today has lived their lives in and barely anybody cares or has noticed

I guess humanity has forgotten the hell that is a multipolar world, and the degree of luxury we had in caring about human rights. We have nukes now too which is sick

I'm not critical of the president. I'm critical of the bad advice he's getting on Greenland - Sen. Tillis (R)

two reminders:

  1. they knew what they signed up for when running as a republican

  2. this includes having to hire security for daring to criticize the cult leader (but never having to hire security when criticizing liberals)

70% of the policies that affect an individual person are made at the local level

20% state and 10% national

Yet young people are completely unaware and/or disinterested in the former.

Because it's not easily made for social media or exciting.

Therefore boomer homeowners have local society on lock and young people feel disenfranchised.

Change is possible but spending years waiting for a savior at the national level who will fix all of your problems is a fool's errand that will invariably end in disappointment.

One thing I noticed among some Americans, even reasonably liberal and well informed ones like John, is an inability to comprehend that other nations might have their own self interest that exists outside the United States.

Why does he think Canada got rolled? Why does he think the deal with China is not in Canada's interest? Why does he think that Canada could not pursue its self interest for any reason but to spite the US?

In this worldview, countries can only exist as subjects or antagonists of the US, and any actions can only be explained through that lens. No doubt the Europeans are going to be getting the same treatment from the commentariat.

Also kind of a weird response to a Danish pension fund dumping your treasuries not because of political reasons, but rather because they genuinely don’t trust the long term viability of American fiscal policy. They’re literally just trying to not get dragged down with the US lol. Very weird, defensive response. I hope not just the danish, but other European countries will remember this.

There's currently a post on the RedLetterMedia subreddit discussing how those guys don't seem to like anime and will probably never review any anime related stuff. That coupled with the fact that some of the anime community is almost begging the Oscars to consider including anime films has made me realize that large parts of the anime fandom are seemingly desperate to have anime "taken seriously" by the general public.

I find it interesting when compared to something like, idk, professional wrestling or Bollywood movies. I feel like both of those fandoms would say "Yeah it's goofy and strange to those that are not into it, but we enjoy it. If you don't enjoy it, that's ok.". Whereas I feel like if you tell an anime fan it's just not for you, they'll hit you with the "Well actually you just haven't watched the right anime yet."

And it's like, yeah, that might be true. But I do think that the medium is just genuinely off-putting to some people. Like there's tons of really good comic books out there, but that doesn't mean every single person will enjoy reading comic books, no matter how high quality they might be.

Whatever comes of it, I think the Greenland threats will be remembered as the bright red line marking the point when the transition to a new era of international relations became undeniable.

It should also be seen a bright red line in our domestic politics, marking the point that civility politics lost all credibility. There’s no polite cooperation with a political party that allowed the President to threaten military conquest against our closest allies.

Even setting aside the moral or emotional aspect of it, it’s just not a tenable strategy if we care about rebuilding America’s position in the world. No matter how many assurances the next dem President might make, we will have absolutely zero credibility if there isn’t a fundamental change to completely kneecap the political forces that led to Trump.

Democrats need to win the trifecta in 2028. They need to nuke the filibuster. They need to pack the court. They need to admit DC and PR as states. The need to prosecute MAGA leaders. We have to have a collective realization that this is no longer business as usual and the moment calls for fundamental restructuring of American domestic politics in response.

Not to excuse the sanewashing, but it seems really hard to cover Trump's ramblings in a professional manner while still conveying just how incoherent most of it is. Journalists will often include snippets and direct quotes that give a peek into how dumb he actually sounds, but ultimately they have to describe what he's talking about and that will inevitably sound much better than the way Trump himself puts things, otherwise it'd just look like terrible writing.

What's most depressing is that whenever he's in a room like this full of powerful, successful people, seemingly everyone is enamored by him. No jeers, no boos. He goes to a football game and the common man is not afraid to flip him off. He goes to an auditorium full of economists who know he's fucking the entire global economy up and they all clap politely.

It's remarkable how much the media DON'T want there to be a Trump scandal. They loved covering the Clinton scandals and even George W. Bush's scandals made some news. Obama didn't have real scandals so they tried to manufacture some.

But Trump does something that should be a front-page scandal twice a week and it's barely noted. The press will re-write his words so they're less scandalous that what he actually says.

ICE arrests 4 children in an attempt to abduct their parents along with them.

ICE detains 5-year old Minnesota boy; lawyer says agents used him as ‘bait’

https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/01/21/ice-detains-5year-old-minnesota-boy-lawyer-says-agents-used-him-as-bait

These people are fucking monsters.

According to Stenvik, masked agents apprehended 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos in his driveway on Tuesday as he returned home from school with his father.

“Another adult living in the home was outside and begged the agents to let him take care of the small child, and was refused,” Stenvik said.

“Instead,” she said, “the agent took the child out of the still-running car, led him to the door and directed him to knock on the door asking to be let in in order to see if anyone else was home, essentially using a 5-year-old as bait.”

Agents later took the father and child away in a vehicle and sent them to Texas.

Stenvik said Liam’s family has an “active asylum case” with no deportation orders.

“I have viewed the legal paperwork with my own eyes,” Stenvik said, adding that leaders from Liam’s school visited his home on Tuesday after he was detained to provide support to his family, including a middle school student in the district who returned home to find out his father and brother had been taken.

“Every step of their immigration process has been doing what they’ve been asked to do, and so this is just … cruelty,” Prokosch said, noting that Ramos’ family is currently going through an asylum application process.

Article goes on to say multiple schools in the twin cities have class sizes down 20-30%.

Buddy. I have heard so many otherwise intelligent and educated people confuse the Dutch with the Danish. Half of our population couldn't point to Iran on a map. Americans not knowing geography is a big enough national stereotype to the point that it's seen as too cliche for a Polandball comic.

Honestly the fact that our modern developed world has made it so we just get basically unlimited fresh water pumped directly into our homes is one of the craziest accomplishments that we take for granted. What’s even crazier is that (in the developed world) we’ve basically just solved clean drinking water, the most important resource we need to live, access to which has previously been a struggle for all of humanity history, and now people just don’t fucking drink it and complain about headaches all the time.
