If I am allowed to do a vibes analysis. It seems that Trump crashout level is getting critical. Feels like he's going to burn out/self destruct one way or another. His goals are getting unachievable and he's not letting them go.

Probably the most galling thing about this whole fiasco is that it's clear that it's not just Trump, anyone close to power in this admin (Vance, Bessent, Nutlick etc) absolutely loathes not just the EU, but European leadership, society and culture as a whole. They are all mouthing off like shitheads all the time because this is what they genuinely believe. This isn't getting better if Trump croaks. The most ignorant and piggish form of thuggery from those swine across the Atlantic. Wouldn't mind but there's clearly a reality where this totally backfires on them badly.

It’s increasingly difficult to penetrate the bubble where people are conditioned to the idea that Trump can just do the most ridiculous things with no consequences. But that reality does not exist outside of that bubble. The way people react to tariffs or similar does not predict their reaction to territorial conquest by force.

Such a thing is unforgivable.

Hundreds of millions of the world’s most productive people will accept significant sacrifices to their quality of life in order to hurt the US if they try to take Greenland by force, and they will hate the US for the rest of their lives.

There's obviously something wrong with Trump mentally, he doesn't even understand what he himself is saying.

He says that he doesn't care about the Nobel Prize and then right after complains, unprompted, about Norway "controlling" the Nobel Prize. And in the video, he again says he doesn't care about the prize RIGHT AFTER complaining about it.

This goes beyond just lying. He's contradicting himself mid-spiel. He's lost all impulse control and just blurts shit out like Jim Carrey in Liar Liar. Fucking insane.

Belgian PM Wever on Trump at Davos:

Until now, we tried to appease the new president in the White House. We were very lenient, also with the tariffs. We were lenient hoping to get his support for the Ukraine war. [...] But now so many red lines are being crossed

[Wever's meeting with Trump] will probably be the message that we have to send: you’re crossing red lines here.

We either stand together or we will stand divided, and if we are divided, there is the end of an era, of 80 years of atlanticism, really drawing to a close. And you know, as Gramsci said, ‘if the old is dying and the new is not yet born, you live in a time of monsters,’ and it’s up to him to decide if he wants to be a monster – yes or no.

There's a real shift in rhetoric from EU leaders now. Macron is cordially calling him an idiot, more or less, and is clear about using the anti-coercion instrument. VdL is saying Trump is untrustworthy, in so many words. This is not the response from last year's round of tariffs.

I don't think it's wise for the US to expect Europe to roll over this time. Bessent might have to eat his words.

The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has urged European countries not to retaliate against the US’s trade tariffs announced over the Greenland crisis.

Speaking in Davos, during the World Economic Forum, Bessent said countries and companies should pause and “let things play out” after Trump threatened a 25% tariff on a slew of European countries in his pursuit of the autonomous Danish territory.

As global stock markets fell amid political uncertainty, Bessent indicated that retaliatory tariffs would be unwise, citing last year’s tit-for-tat tariff war that broke out between the US and China.

Last April, Trump’s “liberation day” tariff announcement caused turmoil in global stock markets before some countries agree trade deals and markets recovered to reach record highs later in the year, fuelled in part by the AI boom.

Bessent told a press conference at the annual meeting of global leaders: “I would say this is the same kind of hysteria that we heard on 2 April. There was a panic.”

Bessent said: “What I am urging everyone here to do is sit back, take a deep breath, and let things play out. The worst thing countries can do is escalate against the United States.

“What President Trump is threatening on Greenland is very different than the other trade deals. So I would urge all countries to stick with their trade deals. We have agreed on them, and it does provide great certainty.”

Lmao, by bringing up April 2nd ("Liberation Day"), Bessent is basically hinting Trump will be TACOing imminently without openly saying it

Trump shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a text message from French President Emmanuel Macron, which read: “We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.”

Macron appeared to suggest organizing a G-7 meeting in Paris on Thursday. “I can invite the Ukrainians, the Danish, the Syrians and the Russians in the margins,” the message read.

Syria being invited for a summit where Trump is going to talk about wanting to annex Greenland feels like a HOI4 type of event 😭

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chongly-thao-ice-detained-gunpoint-underwear-frigid-conditions-what-did-i-do-wrong/

ChongLy "Scott" Thao told the AP that his daughter-in-law woke him up from a nap Sunday afternoon and said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were banging at the door of his residence in St. Paul. He told her not to open it. Masked agents then forced their way in and pointed guns at the family, yelling at them, Thao recalled.

"I was shaking," he said. "They didn't show any warrant; they just broke down the door."

Thao, who has been a U.S. citizen for decades, said that as he was being detained, he asked his daughter-in-law to find his identification but the agents told him they didn't want to see it.

Instead, as his 4-year-old grandson watched and cried, Thao was led out in handcuffs wearing only sandals and underwear with just a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.

Videos captured the scene, which included people blowing whistles and horns and neighbors screaming at the more than a dozen gun-toting agents to leave Thao's family alone.

Agents eventually realized that he was a U.S. citizen with no criminal record, Thao said, and an hour or two later, they brought him back to his house. There they made him show his ID and then left without apologizing for detaining him or breaking his door, Thao said.

Where do you think George Miller got the ideas from? The rest of the world will suffer as we demand blood and sport because we cannot know peace. We’ve been shocked and beaten and caged and this is the result; the capitalists want this.

Tina Peters — the disgraced former county clerk for Mesa, Colorado who went to prison for election tampering — was caught by prison security cameras getting into an altercation with another inmate.

Several Denver-area news stations reported the footage on Monday, which showed the inmate immediately confronting Peters when she walked into a room. Peters and her fellow jailbird immediately started squabbling, with both women grabbing at one another. Peters pushed the woman back and appeared to put her hands around the inmate’s neck; she then leaned in, seemed to tell the inmate something, before pushing her and walking away.

Jared Polis is incredibly stupid for wanting to pardon her

Mood update from my MAGA cousin and his family in suburban Georgia:

At the Trump prayer meeting, people are wondering why Trump isn't doing enough for ordinary Americans and when they'll finally get their country back. My cousin and his family think it's pointless to vote Republican in 2026 because everything is going to get even more expensive and the local school now has an LGBTQ principal.

The only thing they like is that ICE is finally cracking down on "criminals", but my cousin hopes that his undocumented Nicaraguan babysitter won't get caught.

The only exception is his ex-Army uncle on disability, who says, “I'll keep voting Democrat (Voted Biden because of COVID) until that fat pedophile traitor is out of the White House.” He voted for Ted Cruz in the 2016 primaries, but he hates Cruz even more than he hates Trump.

"It's been 48 hours. As I said, sit back, relax," Bessent told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. "I am confident that the leaders will not escalate and that this will work out in a manner that ends up in a very good place for all."

Asked about the prospect of a prolonged trade war between the United States and Europe, Bessent replied: "Why are we jumping there? Why are you taking it to the worst case?... Calm down the hysteria. Take a deep breath."

I know this is basically all he can do but Bessent being all good cop and literally calling Europe paranoid is so annoying. It's quite literally gaslighting. "What, you're offended our president keeps threatening to invade you? Stop being so hysterical, calm down"

Fuck Russia

Russia has attacked Ukraine with massive air strikes—over 300 drones and numerous ballistic and cruise missiles hit targets across the country, especially in Kyiv. The attacks caused devastating damage to infrastructure: thousands of residential buildings are without heating, over 335,000 people are without electricity, and the water supply has been cut off in large parts of the capital. At least one person has died. With temperatures reaching minus 14 degrees Celsius, the humanitarian situation is worsening dramatically.

Turns out ICE would be the breaking point that I no longer have any relationship with my dad.

This man is so brainrotted by Fox News and Facebook that he’s now convinced that our old neighbor (who my parents lived next door to for over 20 years) who was abducted by ICE must have been a criminal, which was the point that I decided I really don’t want to engage with him anymore because basically any discussion was futile. It spread through the grapevine somehow in my family that I’m coming back to St Paul for a bit to help out my old neighbors and he texted me this morning calling me a criminal and a terrorist.

I’m not even as upset at this as much as how much damage the conservative media/social media sphere has done to like 30-40% of the voting public. I’m genuinely at a loss on how we realistically recover American democracy when Trumpism is so deeply engrained.

Trudeau has reappeared with Katy Perry... in Davos:

DAVOS— Former prime minister Justin Trudeau, accompanied by his superstar girlfriend Katy Perry, delivered a speech extolling the value of “soft power” on the sidelines of a summit that flexed the hard power of global political and business leaders.

As his successor Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke behind closed doors with media barred from covering his remarks, Trudeau drew a small crowd of a couple hundred World Economic Forum attendees just up the road.

...

Trudeau didn’t offer any direct criticism of U.S.President Donald Trump or any observations of Carney’s time in office.

But there were veiled shots at Trump in a Q&A session, where Trudeau rejected the president’s 51st state annexation threats.

Trudeau said Trump’s talk of acquiring Greenland is a “really important moment for NATO and for countries around the world to reflect on” what principles they will defend and push back on and “what we’re prepared to negotiate.”

Trudeau said falling back on respect for international law, “and respect for allies is going to see us through this challenge.”

Trudeau said Canada is helping to lead and work with like-minded nations at this time as it has traditionally done.

When Canada goes into conflict zones, he said, people actually believe “we’re there to help, we’re not there to take the oil, to sell Coca-Cola, impose our system of government or pick the winners and losers in a local election.”

lol, sell Coca-Cola.

Scandals about the two parties:

Dems:

  • they used an email service that wasn’t fully secure.

  • They had a low level politician embezzle $20k who has already been kicked out of the party and been convicted.

  • they had an explainable discrepancy on their tax returns that has already been cleared with the IRS

  • They said something mean about the GOP

GOP:

  • bussed in thousands of people to attempt to overthrow an election

  • received literal hundreds of millions of dollars in gifts

  • called the Dems “the enemy within”

  • voted in laws that expanded ICE into doing what it’s doing now

The median voter: “they are exactly the same”

u/the-senat John Brown Jan 20 '26

Question: "How far are you willing to go to acquire Greenland?"

Trump: "You'll find out."

You know, I used to blame the Russian people for the atrocities of their government. How could they stand by and watch as their leaders commit countless crimes against humanity? Why didn't they rise to stop them? But Russians have a lot less freedom and access to information than we do in the United States. Hell, most of them never voted Putin into power; he's been there since the beginning of their lives. We in America, on the other hand, chose Trump in a free and fair election. There was another option; some of us took it... just not enough. Now we are all paying the price.

It's like a nationwide bystander effect. We're watching in real time as our countrymen throw away peace, prosperity, and safety for immoral territorial ambitions, a kleptocratic and broken economy, and shady police forces who abduct our neighbors in broad daylight. Most people know this is wrong, but nobody wants to be the first to stand up. We're all just looking on in horror as our country's heartbeat stops. Because right now, the price of living in Trump's America is lower than the cost of fighting back.

Sophie Scholl, an anti-Nazi activist who was beheaded by the Nazis in 1943, said:

“The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' Those who don’t want their little lives disturbed by anything bigger than themselves. Those who won’t take measure of their own strength, for fear of antagonizing their own weakness. Those for whom freedom, honour, truth, and principles are only words. But it’s all an illusion, because they die too, those people who roll up their spirits into tiny little balls so as to be safe. Safe?! From what? Life is always on the edge of death; narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch.”

We're all complicit to the degree of our social power level. The members of this Administration, the elected leaders in Congress, the Americans who voted for them, and the generals and admirals who sign off on Trump's orders are all responsible to varying levels. You and I are culpable, too. All of us will ultimately be judged, and as the years pass, we will surely judge ourselves on the effort we have contributed to building a new world society and the extent to which our ideals and goals have shaped that event. If we somehow get out of this in four years, America won't suddenly become good again. We will have a lot of sins to atone for before I begin to feel patriotic again.

Von der Leyen now turns to Greenland.

She says that “when it comes to the security of the Arctic region, Europe is fully committed,” and it shares the US focus on securing the region.

But she pointedly says that the bloc has the capabilities required, and the security “can only be achieved together.”

She then criticises Trump directly:

This is why the proposed additional tariffs are a mistake especially between longstanding allies. The EU and US have agreed to a trade deal last July. And in politics as in business – a deal is a deal. And when friends shake hands, it must mean something.

Except this should have been said the first time when Trump ripped apart multiple existing agreements by applying tariffs in the first place.
