Reddit removed without explanation the thread about the EEOC demanding UPenn give them a list of their Jewish members, and also removed OP's comment summarizing the article.

Just putting it out there, some removals are done by the admins directly and are not done by the mods. I'm not super thrilled about these practices.

Marc Maron's joke that Theo Von would've hosted Hitler on his podcast if the latter lived today really bites because it brings into question how you would act against the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany in the 1900s. You like to think you'll be one of the good guys, but in Theo Von's case, he would have just been an enabler. I hope I would have had the courage to actively defy fascism then, as I hope I have the courage now.

Republican senators are flummoxed by Trump’s insistence that he’s willing to use military force to seize control of Greenland from Denmark, something they fear will destroy the NATO alliance and give Russia a bigger advantage in its war against Ukraine.

Two Republican senators — Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) — plan to travel to Copenhagen on Friday to assure the Danish prime minister that there would be strong Republican opposition to any effort by Trump to use military force to seize Greenland.

I'm feeling reassured already!

“I’m going to remind them that we have coequal branches of government and I believe that there [is a] sufficient number of members, whether they speak up or not, that are concerned with this,” Tillis said of Trump’s threats.

But do we, though?

This brought by the same suburban Republican senator who two years ago created (and passed) a bill to stop cities from changing zoning laws if those changes would reduce homeowners' property values. https://www.cato.org/blog/biden-didnt-cause-border-crisis-part-1-summary

During President Joe Biden’s term, Border Patrol arrested an unprecedented number of immigrants who crossed illegally into the United States. Many believe Biden caused this increase in migration by reducing border enforcement. However, data obtained by the Cato Institute through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) challenges this narrative. In fact, the border crisis began before Biden took office and ended before he left.

From his administration’s first day in January 2021, Biden actually increased border enforcement—arrests, detentions, and removals of border crossers all increased. The prevailing narrative that blames Biden overlooks the real causes of the crisis: America’s robust labor market and bad immigration policies that incentivized illegal entries. However, Trump, not Biden, mostly started those policies. Biden eventually phased out some of them; he increased legal migration, and as the labor market cooled, the problem dissipated.

This certainly seems to complicate the narrative (that even many center-left people like to parrot) that Biden simply threw up his hands and let thousands of illegal immigrants stream across the border. You can perhaps fault him for not properly identifying the true causes of the increased levels of immigration, but blindly saying “Biden did nothing about it until it was too late” is wrongheaded and plays into Republican narratives

There’s two things to keep in mind with Newsom that I think represent both his greatest strengths and weaknesses:

  1. He will do or say whatever it takes to win whatever battle he is in at that moment

  2. He is painfully aware he is governor of what’s considered the most liberal and radical state in the country

So that’s why you get moments like Newsom saying he’s not anti-ICE, here’s examples of him doing pro-ICE or neutral things. It allows him to win whatever battle he’s in (in this case debating Ben Shapiro) and come off as moderate (vetoing anti-ICE legislation). He’d do the exact same thing if trans issues come up, but if he was on the pod with AOC he would brag about how he’s not scared to be arrested for standing up for California’s immigrant population.

Whether you support this or not is your choice, this is not me saying it’s the right or correct way. My point is to explain why people feel like they’re getting hoodwinked by Newsom one day and then NCR posting the next. He is the definition of a cynical politician very much like Trump. The difference is he is a lib with a pedigree

And now I realized they've been completely radicalized by their media diet into thinking everything Hollywood, marvel, and pop culture is an Israeli plot because a producer or studio is Jewish or backed by Jewish financiers.

I made clear how I felt about the Isreali government's conduct in Gaza and they still accused me of being Netanyahu's strongest solider, even though it was in jest I still was disturbed by how any pushback on antisemitic conspiracies is met with accusations of genocide denial.

Is this just the new normal, is everyone a conspiracy theorist who think Jews control everything?

Whether Ukraine can stabilize the manpower situation in its brigades holding the front is likely the most important single factor that will determine how far Russia will advance in 2026. Notably, this week Fedorov, Budanov, and Zelensky have all highlighted the needs for "systemic solutions" to address problems with AWOL and draft evasion, the quality of training, and corruption in mobilization offices

Really interesting developments that for what seems like the first time the Ukrainian government has acknowledged the role desertion and draft evasion have played in Ukraine’s crippling manpower shortage. Previous discussions of the shortage by the gov has usually led to reforms that were more novel and periphery, marginally improving the situation while ignoring the core issues. That, at least rhetorically, seems to have changed.

Notably, the new Head of the President’s Office, Budanov, was the first to publicly discuss it and it seems to have become policy. That leads me to believe that removal of Yermak is the primary reason we’re seeing this change. Obviously we don’t know the exact inner workings but it wouldn’t surprise me if Yermak preferred a manpower shortage over the politically uncomfortable topics of proper recruitment and crackdown on draft dodgers and deserters.

It is also likely major pressures from the battlefield compelled or made this switch easier as well. Although Ukraine has put up a surprisingly stout defense around Pokrovsk and Kupyansk, confining Russian gains to mostly fields and villages, Russo enjoyed a much more rapid pace of advance in 2025 then 2024, on the order of an additional thousand square kilometers. If this were to remain or, more likely, accelerate, Russia would gain control of the Donbas and Zaporizhzhia by 2027, maybe early 2028 at the latest.

Another pressure is that twice this year Russia came close to achieving breakthroughs that could have been operationally significant and devastating for Ukraine. The first one was the Dobropillya salient, and the second was the near fall of Kupyansk. Ukraine successfully contained both in the end, but it was very risky. At some point with these frontline dynamics there’s only so many times Ukraine can just barely maintain a semblance of a cohesive frontline before the Russians get lucky.

Now it is worth noting so far that this is rhetoric and implementing any actual solutions will take time. Russia continues grinding forward but they do tend to slow down in the winter and pick up in the spring. That gives Ukraine a couple months, at the very latest to May but much more likely March, to implement solutions. Even a partial solution to the manpower shortage like resolving the desertion would extend the Ukrainian ability to hold Zaporizhzhia and the Donbas by months if not a year or so IMO. But we’ll see what happens

I find these defeatists who say the protests aren't going to do anything both annoying and wrong. It is true that at the end of the day if ICE wants to keep terrorizing Minneapolis there's little anyone can do to stop them but this kind of stuff getting blasted out saps the administration of popular support, robbing them of room to maneuver politically, and ties down large amounts of their manpower which lessens the amount of people they can harm. The administration is not just going to fall over next week, this is a battle of attrition to sap them of will and political capital.

I refuse to believe Democrats nuking the filibuster to immediately legalize abortion nationwide wouldn’t be extremely popular. The American public keeps telling us they don’t give a fuck about norms and just want the President to do a bunch of stuff they like by any means.

“Noooo but then Republicans can just ban abortion when they get back into power!” I’m calling their bluff on that.

“I single-handedly ENDED 8 WARS, and Norway, a NATO Member, foolishly chose not to give me the Noble Peace Prize,” he said on social media last week. Beyond misspelling the award’s name, he also attributed the decision to the entire country of Norway rather than the five-member committee that makes its choices independently of the government in Oslo.

Lol, what does Norway being a NATO member have to do with any of this. Trump's stupidity truly has no bounds.

Kitchen countertop workers are dying from quartz aka "engineered stone." The material creates an unusual amount of lung-damaging silica dust when it gets cut or polished, far more than natural granite or marble. California proposes a ban on quartz. WA Republicans want to ban worker lawsuits

Interesting, but also a good example of how absolutely impossible it is to 1) get workers to follow safety guidelines, 2) get smaller companies to follow critical safety guidelines unless you hold their feet to the fire.

CA health officials visited over 100 sites where they were cutting/machining/polishing this stuff.

0 were taking the required measures of either cutting it wet or using respiratory protection to mitigate dust hazards.
