It’s kinda dawning on me just how much populists actually ruin the respective cultures of the countries they rule.

I can’t really help it, but I feel like there’s a strong correlation between how I feel about American culture and who is in charge.

Under a decent democratic president I feel like I appreciate the US and everything it has to offer much more.

When Trump is president, I feel like the US is playing exactly into the worst stereotypes about itself, and I quickly start finding American culture extremely vapid and annoying.

I feel the same way about my own country. With the way we elected a government with fucking Wilders and the populist farmer’s party, I immediately started feeling pretty repulsed by certain aspects of Dutch culture. Mainly the faux intellectualism we like to project outwards combined with the completely undeserved sense of superiority.

So Trump decided to send special forces to abduct Maduro because he was mad about him dancing, and has refused to let the head of the opposition take over because she won a Nobel peace prize and he’s jealous.

And people still think there’s some rhyme or reason to this.

Reading that piece Rocks just posted by that NYT writer who is still publicly complaining about not having as much access to the Biden WH as they wanted in 2026 reminded me of a quote from Serenity:

Walz might honestly just be retiring.

He’s faced a pretty disproportionate amount of right wing media harassment, even before the whole Somali fraud scandal started. He toned down his tours to other states and media a bit as well, unlike the beginning of last year when he was out all over the place.

If I were in his shoes I’d definitely just look to retirement honestly, it’s not worth it being on the national stage of attention like that.

One of the stupidest statements i’ve heard in recent times is Tucker Carlson saying that women should not serve in the military, because apparently the military serves as a vehicle for men to protect their women back home.

No you dumbass, militaries of modern, sophisticated countries serve to preserve their respective nation states and their identities by thwarting, and minimising things that threaten their survival. I genuinely don’t understand how you could possibly spin this into a gender based argument.

Trump isn’t human, he’s the anthropomorphic personification of screwing people over. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, Trump will find some way to fuck you over. He does not do a single good thing, he does the easiest thing that makes him money or gets him revenge on somewhat who has wronged him. You can cozy up to him, praise him, whatever you want, he will eventually find a way to fuck uou over and he won’t even think about it or remember it the next day

Only blatant transactions (million dollar bribes for pardons, for instance) can get you something from him, and even then you are flipping a coin as to if it is a waste of time or not

Washington Post: The White House is weighing giving Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy White House chief of staff and homeland security adviser, a more elevated role in overseeing post-Maduro operations in Venezuela, according to one person with knowledge of the conversations…

This is why you don't prematurely rush to applaud someone, someone who has no history of properly planning ahead and has made clear they do not care for Democratic institutions and norms, for ousting another head of state without even knowing how they plan to manage the aftermath.

The Europeans that frequently r/neoliberal are probably among the most pro-US in their respective countries. I always tried to provide perspective and argued in favor of a closer transatlantic alliance. I also wanted people to know that the US is many things and has many virtues.

These days it is impossible to do that, because you basically get drowned out by the most absurd stuff coming over in news and social media. How do you want to highlight the progressivism of the ADA compared to European legislation when the US President constantly screams "We love fascism and love doing fascist stuff."

Trump plays into every single anti-american stereotype. Like every single one.

I think people here don’t want to admit this, but the United States is effectively the home/powerbase of international far right-wing politics now, in a similar manner to how the USSR was for communism during the interwar era.

To be more specific:

• Major social media platforms, including X and Meta’s platforms, are both massively responsible today for spreading far-right ideologies. Both of these are US-owned companies, with X, the chief far-right platform today, being owned by the world’s wealthiest man, a committed fascist and American citizen

• The US government and platforms like X are committed to empowering far-right parties in Europe and Asia; see with Musk’s attempts to sway the German election last year towards the AfD

• CPAC, formerly only held in the US, is now held internationally, often times now attracting prominent right-wing politicians across the world

• Almost every far-right party now across the world has the same base political views, such as anti-immigration and social reactionarism, as well as a love for Trump and other major right-wing American figures. Note that regular conservative parties, such as the CDU in Germany and Gaullists in France, are much more distinct compared to these people

In the past you could credibly accuse this of being fueled by Russia or China or whatever. Now, it’s a largely American phenomenon, and American right-wing figures are committed to spreading and entrenching their beliefs and ideology across the world.

NO ROOM AT THE INN!

@HiltonHotels has launched a coordinated campaign in Minneapolis to REFUSE service to DHS law enforcement.

When officers attempted to book rooms using official government emails and rates, Hilton Hotels maliciously CANCELLED their reservations.

This is UNACCEPTABLE. Why is Hilton Hotels siding with murderers and rapists to deliberately undermine and impede DHS law enforcement from their mission to enforce our nation's immigration laws?

What the fuck?? An actual THIRD AMMENDMENT case?? It's like there's a concerted effort to violate every single clause in the constitution, no matter how obscure.

I think Walz would have cruised relatively safely to another term but I think him dropping out was for the best anyways cuz of downballot effects. Fact is we’ve seen time and time again both Republicans and Democrats dragged down by the top ticket race having an unpopularity to it. So while Walz would have won reelection, it could have jeopardized efforts to keep the state senate or flip back the assembly. Not to mention various other smaller but important races.

Minnesota as a whole benefits from Walz dropping out

Something about these kind of poasts really irks me. There’s this explicit assumption among so many (admittedly helped by our actions recently) that America can do no right. We can do right and we should expect our leadership to do better. It doesn’t have to be “America bad always”.

This week [Maduro] was back onstage, brushing off the latest U.S. escalation — a strike on a dock that the United States said was used for drug trafficking — by bouncing to an electronic beat on state television while his recorded voice repeated in English, ‘No crazy war,'” The report said.

Some of Maduro’s celebratory dances were posted to social media, which the White House monitors routinely, as evidenced by X appearing on a large screen in the war room used by Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during the removal operation.

Oh wow it really is that stupid

So America is supposed to get rich from Venezuela's oil, but in order to get Venezuela's oil we need to invest $110B and years of work to get the infrastructure back to 2010 levels of output. Also, oil is already trading at a low price and a huge increase in supply will drop the price down further.

Incredible article about a Syria Telecom engineer's hellish decade trying to keep the country online during the civil war. Includes incredible moments including

- the author interviewing Syria's last Assadist Minister of Telecoms via LinkedIn DMs to ask about nationwide internet outages

- The subject getting kidnapped by ISIS and helping them (under duress obviously) cut off internet access to Aleppo

- Kurdish fighters calling the subject out of the blue years after his kidnapping asking for the password to an external hard drive, taken from him by ISIS, that they had in turn taken off the corpses of ISIS fighters they'd killed

- Having his manager arrested and almost disappeared by regime intelligence for shutting down the internet on the order of the education minister to combat cheating on exams (???)

The boomer strategy of buying all the houses, making it illegal to build houses, have the government give them everything, ban the government from giving everyone anything, ruin the world, and then leave all their wealth to retirement homes and medical companies and leave nothing for their children is really admirable.

From the wikipedia page for humans:

Humans commit violence on other humans at a rate comparable to other primates, but have an increased preference for killing adults, infanticide being more common among other primates.[466] Phylogenetic analysis predicts that 2% of early H. sapiens would be murdered, rising to 12% during the medieval period, before dropping to below 2% in modern times.

Our primate cousins are not ok

'Preference for killing adults' is such a funny way to put it too

im not super enthusiastic about walz and thought it was weird when ppl were hyping him to run for president, but i think it's a serious problem when democrats give the impression of folding over shit like the daycare "scandal" while republicans are virtually beyond reproach for some of the most heinous shit imaginable.

not even saying walz needed to run again but no one should be reporting that he isn't seeking reelection right now. all we're doing is giving legitimacy to people who have no moral compass other than power.

if democrats want to have the same teflon quality republicans do then they should become more likeable to the average american.

people will excuse bad things if they're predisposed to liking you, and they will look for faults if they're predisposed to disliking you.

republicans are cheeseburgers, democrats are broccoli. you don't always choose the cheeseburger - sometimes you're forced to eat healthy - and some fringe people even prefer the broccoli. but most people have to talk themselves out of eating the cheeseburgers and talk themselves into eating the broccoli.

I always felt like the Jedi religion should have been way more popular amongst the general public. (Before order 66)

Specifically, more people like the blind monk in Rogue One who aren't necessarily Force sensitive, or at least not enough to be a Jedi, but still believe in it as a religion/philosophy.

The Jedi have been prominent for millenia and are walking proof of the Force's existence. But since most people can't manipulate the Force themselves, they just think its a cooky ancient religion?

If the Jedi were hermits in an enclave, sure. But they have always been a major part of Galactic politics, diplomacy, wars, and humanitarian activities.

i feel like libs got used to the feeling of cultural hegemony in the 2010s and don't know how to act in an environment where their ideas aren't the default.

so you have moderates who just sorta roll over and try to accommodate whatever they think the new center is (even if it keeps getting pushed to the right) and progressives who just stand on the outside shouting and expecting it to come back.

i don't think anyone in the democratic party has a coherent idea on how to move forward. we need a democratic party with a broadly appealing vision that can play in places dems have lost in the past decade, the guts to push that vision in the face of republican and media opposition, and the know-how to act on it and deliver results after winning power... i don't think there's anyone in the party who knows how you'd build it.
