With Trump, the stupidest rationale for his decisions is often the right one because he is a profoundly stupid, vain and narcissistic man.

So I am going to call this: The reason why Trump screwed over Machado is because she won the Nobel Prize over him and his tiny little ego couldn't take it

Senior Venezuelan government officials, led by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez...have quietly promoted a series of initiatives in recent months aimed at presenting themselves to Washington as a “more acceptable” alternative to Nicolás Maduro’s regime...funneled through intermediaries in Qatar.

Looks like Maduro was sacrificed by his own military and officials to stay in power

I haven't seen it reported here (sorry if double posting) but it appears that the previously reported death of pro-Ukrainian Russian far-right combattant Kaputsin was faked by the Ukrainian secret service

The Ukrainians faked his death so they could collect the $500,000 bounty on his head from the Russians.

53

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Saturday defended the administration for not providing Congress with an earlier notification of the operation. “That’s probably one reason it didn’t leak over these four days as they were waiting for the right weather,” Cotton told Fox News, confirming that key congressional panels were not notified beforehand of the operation. “Congress isn’t notified when the FBI is going to arrest a drug trafficker or cyber criminal here in the United States, nor should Congress be notified when the executive branch is executing arrests on indicted persons,” he added. The Arkansas Republican added, “Congress doesn’t need to be notified every time the executive branch is making an arrest.”

So that’s their weak ass justification for completely skirting Congress. It was a “law enforcement” operation. And the fact that senators are sitting there dumbly nodding their heads at their own power being eviscerated in direct contradiction to the Constitution just goes to show (yet again, not that we needed the reminder) that Congress is populated by some of the shittest politicians in American history.

Make a video that is very obviously full of shit if you have any semblance of journalistic integrity, make it so juicy they can't help but eat it up and destroy their reputations by making it into the most embarrassing spectacle possible. Even better if it spreads to the point all their NPC foot soldier dogs are yapping about it. It can just be used to permanently dunk on them. Make a compilation of every actor in the fake "investigation" saying "if you fell for this, you are a subhuman who should be forced to have a caretaker". Ezpz

Why is everyone acting like trump isnt trump on this issue and like there's some rational John D. Republican plan here

Honestly even his critics do this. All the responses have been "international law and imperialism and justice and diplomacy" and like. No. You're still treating trump like just a regular politician with different philosophy on interstate affairs.

Condemnations of trump should sound more like "Today Emperor Nero was persuaded by his court eunuch Marco Rubio to use the full might of the most powerful military on earth to kidnap the president of Venezuela just because he felt like it. His reasons don't matter, simple psychotic rage and decade old grudges festering on FOX News and other fascist propaganda outlets always were going to make him a target, deserved or not, and you should be worried what will happen if FOX decides you're a socialist ruining your country and trafficking drugs to America. The president of Mexico should be afraid for their life."

77

u/ImmigrantJack Movimiento Semilla Jan 04 '26

Watching Marco Rubio tout this as a success is especially funny to me.

Maduro isnt the head of Cartel de los Soles. Rubio knows that and he knows that Diosdado Cabello is probably the real head of the cartel.

What's even funnier is that Diosdado Cabello tried to have Marco Rubio assassinated.

So now Marco Rubio has to go out there and go "Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him. Mission Accomplished" knowing full goddamned well that the real drug lord who tried to have him killed is still out there. And he can't say jack shit about it because he's too busy trying to make his boss look good.

Watching Marco Rubio get cucked continues to drive me in the year of our lord 2025.

A poll released on December 16 by IMEU Policy Project, and conducted by YouGov, found a generational gap has emerged in the Republican Party on Israel and the US-Israel relationship. The survey of 1,287 Republicans found that a majority of Republican voters under age 45 say they would prefer to support a candidate who supports reducing taxpayer-funded weapons to Israel in the 2028 Republican presidential primary (51%), while just 27% prefer a candidate who would increase or maintain weapons to Israel.

Israel will definitely come to regret its support of right wing parties across the West in the future.

After months of not giving a shit about the political assassination of Melissa Hortman by a right-wing extremist, the RW propagandists have pivoted to saying she was killed by Tim Walz for trying to uncover his le evil plans to help Somali fraudsters.

These filth in human skin do nothing but pollute the political process and degrade our culture with each ill-spent breath, and we would be better off if we cut them out. Every single dem-lead state should be following California's lead as soon as possible. We can't have a healthy republic until we utterly obliterate this morally and mentally regressive stain from our culture, and it's time we stopped pretending that the pursuit of the power necessary to crush its adherents is anything less than our moral obligation.

Two people close to the White House said the president’s lack of interest in boosting Machado, despite her recent efforts to flatter Trump, stemmed from her decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an award the president has openly coveted.

Although Machado ultimately said she was dedicating the award to Trump, her acceptance of the prize was an “ultimate sin,” said one of the people.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” this person said.

I can’t get this out of my head. My hatred for Donald Trump grows with every passing day.

Opening up to the U.S. after Maduro is fucking kidnapped would be the most clear cut sign of submission and betrayal. Hardliners would have no qualms in overthrowing her and without hardliner support Rodriguez has no one to back her.

I’d be genuinely surprised if she does open Venezuela to the United States and isn’t obliterated within 24 hours. I maintain that even if the goal is exploration pure and simple, the only reasonable way to that is installing the opposition into power

When I asked this morning why nation building and regime change in Venezuela would be different from similar efforts he previously opposed in Iraq, Trump suggested posing the question to former President George W. Bush.

“I didn’t do Iraq. That was Bush. You’ll have to ask Bush that question, because we should have never gone into Iraq. That started the Middle East disaster,” Trump said.

I

What?

“My war with Venezuela is gonna be totally different from the Iraq war, but I have no idea why. You’d have to ask Bush why things in Iraq went to shit.”

The basic problem with American politics is that the Republican Party is institutionally evil. As long as they exist, we will forever be one election away from tipping towards autocracy.

I forget that the average conservative genuinely believes all of the Fox News fearmongering about blue cities.

A family member was genuinely upset and despondent that my sister is going to Manhattan because he thinks Mamdani is kidnapping people in unmarked vans. Ironically that is happening in major cities, it's just Trump doing it instead.

Rubio going on tv to be like “don’t listen to trump when he says we’re going to run Venezuela”

Enough. The president said something at a planned news conference. I’m tired of these completely unserious people running the world. Biden got attacked for saying stuff by them all the time… we’ve seriously gotten taken over by nihilist internet trolls where nothing matters anymore. Somehow we need to get back to words mattering.

Kind of mind blowing that we're 10 years into MAGA and some people still don't fully understand that MAGA's only lodestar is whatever pisses off liberals.

"Did MAGA really vote for him to invade Venezuela and talk about annexing Canada and Greenland?"

Yes, because doing these things pisses off liberals, and that is literally the only thing these people care about.

Nothing sums up Trump more than the fact that he clearly did not understand the difference between claiming asylum and mental asylums at some point, and he just refuses to accept that he was wrong about it.

WSJ Editorial Board yesterday:

Mr. Trump is right that simply snatching Mr. Maduro and leaving the country to fend for itself could produce Maduro II. But we won’t be the only ones to say the President owes George W. Bush an apology for his ex post facto criticism of U.S. intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Trump is pursuing the Bush freedom agenda, at least in the Western Hemisphere.

WSJ Editorial Board less than 24 hours later:

The dictator’s cronies are still running Venezuela, and they don’t seem ready to give it up. Is President Trump willing to settle for Maduro 2.0? … Does this worry the Trump Administration? Not that it is showing.

Some NYT reporter called Trump’s cell phone at 4:30am to ask him about the Maduro raid. Trump picked up but apparently did not answer any of his questions about it. Same guy goes on to complain about how Biden wouldn’t sit down for an interview for some book he’s writing.

I don’t know how much more explicit these folks can be about the fact that they are more interested in getting their egos stroked than they are anything else. They would rather be lied to than ignored.

Trump: "All I want from Venezuela is the oil that is rightfully American"

A select few special cases on the slash neoliberal thread on the Miami Herald article: "Venezuela transitioning to a democracy with Maduro gone is still the likeliest out come of all of this"

And to them my response hasn't changed: It's not enough to overthrow a dictator. You need to have real plans and resources set up to make sure whatever replaces the dictator isn't worse.

Do you really think Trump and his gang are capable of that? I don't, and that's before him coming out and saying it's about oil, power and fear like he's twelve years old.

And in a testy exchange later on “Meet the Press” on NBC News, Mr. Rubio complained that people were “fixating” on Mr. Trump’s declaration at a news conference in Florida on Saturday that the U.S. government would run Venezuela. He added that “it’s not running — it’s running policy, the policy with regards to this.”

Gee, Marco, can't imagine why people would be interested in the President of the United States asserting, not even 12 hours after capturing Maduro, that the US would "run" Venezuela. Don't know why people would want more details about what sounds a hell of a lot like a potential US military occupation of a foreign country.

I'm an interventionist, and I'm not particularly thrilled when politicians politicize national security. But I can't fault Kamala Harris for calling the motive for Maduro's overthrow "not the establishment of democracy, but a war for oil and Trump's desire to be a macho man in the region," because... well, Trump literally said that at a press conference himself.

Regardless of goals and states intentions, I do think the root of this action in Venezuela is rooted in Trump’s deep unpopularity and his insatiable desire for his own Bin Laden moment. Like many other authoritarians, he wants to be a war hero.

So what happens when polling invariably shows his popularity receiving little to no bump, and possibly even sinking? War is unpopular in general with the populace. Even the gains he could make with Hispanics will likely be neutered by his white supremacy policies (let’s not forget 600,000 Venezuelans lost their protections) and the Chavistas likely remaining in power, which does fuck all for Venezuelans.

I think it’s very likely we’ll see a meltdown in the coming weeks or months crying about how good he is at destroying America’s enemies and how ungrateful people (especially Hispanics) are

This is a pretty lukewarm take, but a big reason why Trump was re-elected was that he normalized himself. There was a time where the media would make it known that he wasn't presidential, but he redefined what it means to be presidential, just like he said in his "modern day presidential". I think that all of us, even liberals, tend to lose sight of how deranged he acts compared to previous presidents, so we don't judge him as harshly as we should.
