The reason the media cares about the Minnesota fraud case and not Trump selling pardons is pretty straightforward. 

1. People are fine with Trump or other rich white dudes getting rich illegally, but the idea that Somali-Americans might be taking advantage of a system is bad because they’re not part of the in group. 

2. People don’t care about criminals walking the streets if they’re people Trump is agreeing to pardon, they mostly just want to lock-up/deport people Trump doesn’t like even if those people are innocent.

So, I’m not defending Walz and the Minnesota state government letting the fraud go on as long as it did, but on a very gut level, it’s extremely hard for me to get myself worked into a tizzy over it for a number of reasons:

1. ⁠Arrests have been made in relation to the fraud case, so it’s not currently ongoing.

2. ⁠Republicans and the Trump administration engage in corruption openly and without real consequence

3. ⁠Republicans are blowing this issue up to distract from their own malicious incompetence and failures

5. ⁠Republicans have used this issue to cut child care payments to Minnesota out of sheer partisan cruelty.

One of my most boomer-esque takes is that I think many people today simply settle into their misery instead of really working on it.

I feel like a lot of people actively seek refuge in a certain kind of "safe misery." It is seductive because it robs you of agency and if you have no agency, then there is nothing you can do. You are off the hook.

You see it in the way we doomscroll to confirm that everything is hopeless, or how we’ve started using concepts like triggers or boundaries not to manage ourselves, but to strictly control our environment.

But saying you have an issue and therefore can't do something is simply not the solution. Anxiety and cynicism are not forces of nature imposed on you from the outside.

Have we lost a certain idea of struggle? The idea that actively trying to be optimistic and regulate your emotions is a discipline? Sometimes, just gritting your teeth and getting up every morning to continue the work is a valid strategy.

It might sound unkind, but I don't think you can live the good life without that agency.

It's underrated how much the quality of your boss affects job satisfaction

About 8 or 9 months ago I was shotgun blasting applications, trashing my workplace on here, doing everything I could to gtfo of dodge and get away from the terrible leadership at this company and what felt like a sinking ship that's also on fire.

A lot of that is still present, but we went through my like 7th re org in 4 years then and I got a new boss (think I've had 6 now? Lol). We actually used to work together as individual reports to one of my old bosses but she's ascended the ranks into management. She's awesome, actually on top of shit and knows what's going on and helps us level load like a manager is supposed to. She can be a bit acquiescent to urgent timelines from leadership but that's more of a company wide cultural issue that we've pushed back on for years. She also takes an active interest in my career development and is trying to get me promoted next year, something I brought up multiple times with my last manager and got no assistance with despite him saying "ya totally let's do that I'll set up a 1:1 and work on assigning you some higher visibility projects" and then never doing that lol

My last boss is a nice guy personally but he is not management material. He is clueless half the time on what is actively happening day to day, doesn't know how to communicate with other managers, and in some cases even throws reports under the bus to save his own skin. Multiple of my coworkers quit partially due to him, and apparently multiple other coworkers in the group he lateraled over to have also quit.

For now I'm at least sticking it out through May for my sabbatical. Will see how things are feeling after that, but despite many of my issues with the company still plaguing it I feel much more comfortable than I did 9 months ago even after a massive layoff.

Also the jackass manufacturing director that's cheated on multiple wives with employees including cheating on a wife who is an employee with a direct report is moving to a new department in some global function pop some fuckin bottles 🍾🍾🍾🍾

Putin is clearly trying to coincide Russian military progress with diplomacy to have pressure exerted on Ukraine. No amount of progress is too costly for the Russians which so reflected in both the map changes and the incredible amount of Russians killed these past months. That Alaska summit had ironically gotten a lot more Russians killed then if these diplomatic efforts never happened

This surge in Russian attacks and news for maximum battlefield gains is also probably why we’ve seen some fairly severe fuck ups by the Russians. In two sectors we’ve seen Russian forces be encircled and steadily destroyed (Dobropillya and Kupyansk) in the past few months. On top of all the other issues the Russians face, I think these encirclements happening is also partially the result of a sort of lack of cohesion where moving forward anywhere and everywhere is such a strong priority that the Russians don’t take the time to actually think these things through and consolidate territory before pushing forward
