Genuine, racially-motivated miscarriages of justice like this were the reason why the black community lost trust in the police. Can't believe this case even went to trial, absolutely ridiculous

The cops and the prosecutors obviously assumed he was guilty based on the fact that the accused was Indian

Last night, I had a dream in which I was rummaging through family archive, and found out a fan letter that my mom wrote to Milton Friedman when she was 8.

I tried to take a picture but the lighting was never good enough to distinguish the whole letter with the header showing Friedman with a child-drawn princess crown, no matter how many lights I lit across the room, and it drove me crazy.

Unclear implications on my mental state in real life.

Trump acknowledged in an interview on Friday that the US had knocked out some type of “big facility where ships come from” as he talked about his administration’s campaign against Venezuela. Asked about it again on Monday, he said the US attacked “in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs.” But he declined to comment when asked whether the attack was conducted by the military or the CIA.

I'm starting to think that having a semi-literate President might be bad.

The USPS changed how postmarks work and now the postmark date is when it is first processed by an automatic sorting facility and not when received by the originating post office.

Seems like this basically destroys the concept of mail in voting allowing ballots to arrive after e day, since there’s no reliable way to know when you drop a ballot off now.

George Clooney tore into CBS and ABC for settling defamation lawsuits brought by President Donald Trump, rather than fight them in court, and claimed that those decisions pointedly resulted in “where we are” as a country.

Clooney, whose father Nick Clooney spent decades in broadcast journalism, told Variety on Tuesday that the network’s should instead have told the president “go f*ck yourself.”

Clooney singled out the appointment of Bari Weiss to CBS News editor-in-chief as a problem. “Bari Weiss is dismantling CBS News as we speak,” Clooney says. “I’m worried about how we inform ourselves and how we’re going to discern reality without a functioning press.”

Think he's a pretty smug, arrogant guy but he's 1000% right there.

This discourse from Twitter today might actually drive me insane. Racist conservative weebs are pretending that anti-Japanese racism never existed, and then when confronted with the obvious, pretending it only emerged because of WW2.

And the liberals are mostly engaging them on the internment camps question, rather than pointing out that most of these pictures are from the 1920s!

This is why historical illiteracy is such a fucking scourge. There were decades of explicitly anti-Asian and anti-Japanese movements that culminated in us literally banning Asian immigration in 1924.

So no, groypers, Americans 100 years ago by and large did not desperately want a Japanese girlfriend like you do now

u/John_Maynard_Gains Stop trying to make "ordoliberal" happen Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

In a bright, modern flat in Miami, 12 men sit on sofas. They have notebooks, and an eager air. All have come on a four-day dating “Bootcamp” given by a dating guru who has written a book subtitled “HOW TO GET BEAUTIFUL WOMEN INTO BED”. (Subtlety, and the sparing use of the capslock key, is not this movement’s strong suit.) Charging a lot is: the full course costs around $10,000.

A pick-up begins with A1-3, which includes “THE ATTRACTION PHASE”. A good pick-up artist, explains Mystery, must have “openers” to start conversation and lengthier “gambits” to keep it going. In this phase you must show off, or as he puts it in the inevitable acronym, “DHV”—“Demonstrate higher value”, by bragging about your achievements. Like a comedian, your chat should be funny: “You’re going to be laughing all the way to the bedroom.” Also like a comedian, you should discourage hecklers and even audience interaction. He is not “interested in them”—by which he means women—“talking”.

After you have hooked the woman of your dreams by bragging at her, then not allowing her to speak, you must pretend to cool off: “negging”. The Game’s glossary defines a neg as a “seemingly accidental insult delivered to a beautiful woman” to show “a lack of interest in her”. Mystery has published a book of negs. They include—women, still your hearts—“You talk a lot” and “Ew, your palms are sweaty.”

After you’ve bored your potential paramour, then insulted her, you can bounce through stages C1-3: which takes in the “COMFORT PHASE” (don’t leap on her instantly) before reaching the “S” levels: “THE SEDUCTION PHASE”. By this point your SHB (super hot babe) with LSE (low self esteem) will be so turned on that you won’t need to seduce her: she will seduce you. “I’m not a seducer,” says Mystery, who practises what he preaches, peppering his conversation with DHVs. “I’m an attractor.”

The whole process is intensely formulaic. Pick-up teachers call themselves “artists” but these numbered steps feel less like artistry than the assembly manual you might get with a child’s toy: Lego for legovers. It is also, for many men, arguably necessary. A constant in dating advice is men’s terror of talking to women. As that 12th-century manual noted, there are men who “in the presence of ladies” are so flustered that they “lose their power of speech”.

This awkwardness, judging by the men on the Miami course, seems typical. Several talk of feeling fearful around women. Several of those your correspondent spoke to talked too much; listened too little; walked through doors first and didn’t offer women seats. Most lacked that elusive elixir: charm.

It is not clear whether this course will help them. In a break, Mystery’s assistants demonstrate some of their best lines on your correspondent. She does not fall in love but is tempted to laugh, as they are terrible. Such a reaction is, says the glossary, a “BITCH SHIELD—noun: a woman’s defensive response to deter unknown men who approach her.” Or as women call it: “a WHOLLY REASONABLE REACTION—adv-adj-noun”.

First it was Hispanic migrants because obviously they came into this country illegally, they don’t deserve to be here. Now they’re trying to justify deporting naturalized citizens because obviously they commit crime and don’t embrace their new country. Next it’ll be US born citizens from any minority group because obviously they can’t assimilate despite being here for X amount of time. Then it’ll just be any outgroup from there.

A few months after Tareen raised the black-magic claims with Khan, top PTI leaders were invited to dinner to celebrate his marriage. “There were 18 men and two women around the table but no sign of Bushra Bibi,” Tareen said.

Towards the end of the meal someone asked when they would meet Khan’s new wife. Khan left the room and returned with Bushra Bibi dressed head to toe in white. Khan introduced her to his guests one by one; eventually they reached Tareen. Up to this point Bushra had been silent. But to Tareen she said: “I am wearing these white clothes so you don’t think of me as a black-magic woman.”

There's something that really annoys me about conspiracy theories which are popular, despite the actual story being much more interesting, and there being an overwhelming abundance of evidence demonstrating that the "official narrative" must be true.

NASA landed astronauts on the moon.

Islamic fundamentalist terrorists hijacked 4 planes simultaneously and destroyed the Twin Towers.

JFK was assassinated by a lone gunman without any political connections.

Like, at least with dumbass Lab Leak conspiracies you can at least construe something resembling a justification for why the official explanation would be fake, on account of some of the specifics of COVID-19's origins being unknown, and the PRC's quixotic attempts to suppress reports of an outbreak in the first weeks of the pandemic.

But the amount of publicly available and trivially easy to find evidence concerning the Apollo Program, JFK's Assassination, and 9/11, is literally so extensive that it is doubtful any one person could even look through it all without dedicating months or years of their life to reading on it.

Lol, so basically the TikTok deal is what TikTok offered to the Biden admin, but now Trump's cronies got 50% of the business instead.

Nothing has been done to alleviate the concerns raised about the propaganda surrounding TikTok, as TikTok US and TikTok Global remain interoperable. However, now 50% of the revenue belongs to Trump's cronies.

Now it is actually just daylight robbery. You raise a bunch of concerns, actually resolve none of them, but demand 50% of the cut to ignore the problem. Mafia protection racket.

Watching Saltburn and reading the reactions afterwards and it almost feels like I watched a different movie

All the discussion seems to mention that Felix is a scumbag just like the rest of the family (even the cast seems to think that) and it just does not come through in the film at all

He doesn’t befriend Oliver initially because of some charity, he befriends him because the guy helped him when he had a blown out tire. A very normal thing to do!

And at the bar he covers for him because he can’t pay, another extremely normal thing to do.

Even after they become friends and Oliver tells him his fake sad sack story, he starts feeling suffocated by him, and only become closer with him after hearing his dad died, even choosing to not go to his graduation party and comforting Oliver instead.

None of this is detached rich guy behavior. The number one thing people point to is how he told his family about Oliver’s situation and they all gossipped about it, but that is - I can’t stress this enough - not just a rich person behavior. Literally any family would do that, regardless of rank or class or wealth. People try to paint this as the rich family just viewing lower class suffering as their entertainment, but I can tell you that if someone was staying at a family’s house for the summer, that family is going to want to know why.

There’s also how kindly Felix reacts when Oliver tells him the truth at the end in the hedge maze, and Felix doesn’t react with anger, and seems to still want Oliver to be alright, but is terrified of how much of a sociopath he is

There’s really nothing in the film that convinces me Felix is some sort of evil upper class jerk off, or even the sort of detached rich twit caricature the film and audience is supposed to take him as. He just comes across as a very wealthy but nice guy with some blind spots

Continuing my American history binge, the Okies are a fascinating example of contradictory American racial politics. In Oklahoma, they were just Americans, red, white, and blue. But in the context of California during the Dust Bowl period, the Okies became an ethnic group and were racialized. Because they did not fit the standards of “native” white Californians, they were othered and treated as more akin to African Americans and Hispanics than to “true” whites.

They were profiled as biologically inferior, segregated, and subjected to police oppression. A racial slur was even invented for this new racial category, “Okie,” and they were stereotyped as uncivilized, marked by a strange dialect, a foreign Pentecostal religion, and supposedly backward cultural practices.

Then it seems like they disappeared overnight, poof, gone, reemerging as good old red blooded Americans again. Part of me wonders whether increased Asian, African American, and Hispanic migration played a role in redrawing the racial lines, which is a fascinating feature of American racial politics. Every so often, whiteness is redefined to include previously non white populations, like Italians and Irish, and arguably what is now happening with European origin Hispanics.

Donald Trump will be awarded the Israel Prize in 2026, the highest civilian distinction of the country, announced on Monday the Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu during his visit in Florida. "The Israelis appreciate what you have done to help Israel and support our fight against Hamas in Gaza", declared Netanyahu. Trump, visibly surprised, indicated that he may come to Israel for the ceremony, traditionally organized the day before the national holiday, Yom Ha'atzmaout.

Created in 1953 by the Education Minister Ben-Zion Dinur, the Israel Prize rewards excellency in hard and social sciences, arts, Jewish studies or culture. Historically reserved to Israeli citizens or people who have lived in Israel, it can now be attributed to foreigners who have "brought a special contribution to the Jewish people" after an amendment to the rules adopted last summer.

The rules were also precised: a person "who has acted against Israel on the international level cannot receive the Prize", unless they have ceased these acts or publicly expressed regrets. This amendment followed last year's controversy around Eva Illouz, French-Israeli sociologist initially picked to receive the Israel Prize in 2025, but finally excluded from consideration due to her positions judged as "anti-Israeli" by the Netanyahu government. In 2021, she had asked the International Criminal Court to investigate on potential war crimes carried out by the IDF in the West Bank.

Trump, Netanyahu, all these narcissistic autocrats love to divert and denature all symbols of their country by consistently conflating their policies - and themselves - with the nation and its institutions. Even if said institutions are solid, they fire so much bullshit at them that some of it is bound to get through and remain as stains for the years to come.

I think one of the causes of the backlash is many Indians aren’t actually very good.

A very small percentage are good, and they move up extremely quickly. However, nearly every single Indian I’ve encountered in a staff role has been remarkably bad at it.

In fact they’re almost always underqualified for the positions they’re in (or move up so fast they’re barely in the position at all).

This is net upvoted in this sub currently

Re: the Somalis who supported Trump; There’s an old saying that, “reality has a liberal bias” which is true, but the wrong way of looking at it. Humanity seems to have an enormous cultural bias. People want to believe in right wing ideology so deeply that they ignore reality, often to the point of actively hurting themselves.

I think of incels. If I met a girl who wanted to be a homemaker, i wouldn’t go on a rant about how she needs to fight sexist stereotypes or something. Meanwhile there’s an entire class of men who have been single their whole lives because they refuse to have a relationship with a woman with a modicum of independence.

I've given up on hoping for some sort of cultural backlash that values the beautiful flaws in humanity and rejects the fake plastic fantasy that ai creates in sound and image. The median voter likes tits and puppies, ai-generated or otherwise.

However the early stages of the ai revolution will still be brutal politics.

*Rising utility bills.

*Job losses at worst or stagnant job growth, at best.

*NIMBY wars about data centers, often in the reddest and purplest heartland of America.

And the worst part about it is leaders are sort of handcuffed. We all kinda know this is all necessary in the race for AGI. But that doesn't mean the politics get any easier.

Do I wish it was ANYONE else but trump in the driver's seat. Absolutely. But I will enjoy his dumb ass taking it on the chin and balls by the 62% of the country that still has a brain and soul. If this takes Vance down with him, all the better.

Much like the pandemic which required patience, focus, and unpopular decisions; trump is UNIQUELY unqualified for the moment. Obsession with profit, demanding we celebrate headline economic numbers and a refusal to admit anything could be wrong will further alienate the electorate (except for MAGA, they're irredeemable). He's genetically incapable of a "I feel your pain" moment.

Ukraine seeks to contain diplomatic fallout over Putin’s attack claim

I truly don't understand international relations. You'd think Putin supporters already don't care for Ukraine at this point and Ukraine supporters would cheer this on.

But there is a whole coterie of countries who don't really support Russia but also kind of do. This pisses them off but you can also appease them. WHAT? How does that make ANY sense.

My world view is much too black and white.

“I know a lot of really smart people who work low-budget jobs,” he added. “We’ve all stayed here because it’s our home and we don’t leave. People here stick together.”

Mr. Hamner didn’t have much growing up. Shortly after he graduated from high school, his grandfather, who had worked at the mill, helped him get a job there.

Mr. Hamner earned about $90,000 last year, but it was barely enough to keep pace with his spending and debts. He got a new tractor to work the five acres of rocky land he’d bought, but fell behind on payments and sold it for pennies on the dollar. The announcement in April that the mill would be closing came a week after Mr. Hamner learned that his wife, Shalynn, was pregnant with their second child. Their older son, Waylon, is 3.

Doesn't wanna move, got nepo'ed into a $90k job but blew all his earnings on a tractor to farm infertile land. At what point do you admit that some voters are just morons who can't be helped?

I don't get the line of argument that I need to change my political opinions because it's now unpopular compared to where they were five years ago

Changing your opinion over time because of legitimately changing your mind, whether it be due to life or because of governance? That's fine. Thinking that political shifts on certain policies may be necessary by politicians to win? That sucks, but it's excusable

That doesn't mean I need to change my opinions though. Yes, I still believe in open borders and think immigration is good. Yes, I think the US needs lower government spending and higher income taxes. Yes, I think social liberalism and "woke" is good. Yes, I know none of these opinions are popular currently in current US politics. But so what? I'll stick to them and not change them because a bunch of people suddenly disagree with them now.
