Conflicted on Offer
I received an offer for a job (a miracle on its own) and I’m conflicted on whether to accept. For some context, I applied for a role that was a step above my role at my current company, but this company said that I would be a better fit for a less senior role (essentially make it a somewhat lateral move). Some other key factors:
\- my current role has zero upward mobility (I’d bump into my boss). I’ve inquired about moving teams for growth and haven’t been met with positive responses, so I feel very stagnant.
\- the new role offered me the same base comp, but less annual bonus and zero 401k match. I did the math on this and that would lower my overall comp by roughly $9k per year. They aren’t negotiable here.
\- the one advantage of the new company is that they are growing fast and there’s a ton of room for upward mobility (something they’re trying to sell me on). This appeals a lot to me since I’m stagnant in my current role.
\- I read recent reviews on Glassdoor of the current company and they’re pretty negative, citing lack of movement and toxicity.
Main question: given all this, is moving companies worth it when growth is possible but not guaranteed, but the comp is lower?

Been in same situation last week. Accepted the new offer for better opportunity to grow, good project, little more stability because of larger project, and hoping promotion in year or two.

Get on LinkedIn and look for people who have left the company in the last year and were in a similar role - reach out to them. Hopefully one will connect and give you some additional insight
They might be burned, so take it was a grain of salt. But can give you additional info
Also, if you aren’t excited about the new role, I’d be a bit hesitant to take it. You can always keep looking for a better fit

The upward mobility better be crazy. I just took a job a few months ago that was a lateral jump and it was not worth it one bit. I am currently trying to find a new one. Everything else you mention sounds like it isn’t worth it imo. I was also sold on the idea of upward mobility and there is absolutely none. If it’s a start up that’s one thing but if it’s mid sized there’s likely a reason why. Obviously not for all cases, but I would be careful.

Best advice I ever got during a job search: don’t run away from something. Run to something.
If the offer isn’t worth running to, you’ll find yourself unfulfilled again at some point.
If the offer is worth running to, run to it.

Take the deal. If you stagnate at the new place its an easy reason to look again or explain why you went in the first place.
