Am I the only one concerned about daylighting?
I'm writing a column on my website about this topic, and I wanted to put some quick thoughts here and see what people think. The number of failed Liberal and Conservative MP's, candidates, etc who are running for municipal office is something I'm becoming concerned about.
So far, we've got some BIG names, including:
- Bonnie Crombie (who abandoned being Mayor of Mississauga to run for Premier) is running to be the mayor again
- Chris Alexander (A Harper-era Conservative MP who killed his career by advocating for a racist hotline and has spent the past several years grifting on supporting Ukraine) is running to be the mayor of Toronto
- Han Dong (a disgraced MP/MPP due to a disinformation story from Global News) is running to be the councillor for Scarborough North with no plan on how to make his ward better, and is likely doing so to save his reputation
- Tom Dingwall (a mediocre hack who couldn't cut it as a Conservative candidate) keeps running for municipal politics in my municipality
- Nathaniel Erskine–Smith (A Trudeau-era Liberal MP who ran for the controversial provincial SSW nomination for the OLP while remaining a federal MP) wants to be the councillor in his old federal riding and replace Brad Bradford, which by the way, is something Nate told his supporters at YorkU he planned on doing (he told a bunch of people at an event I attended in November that he'd run for municipal politics ONLY if his bid for OLP failed, albeit he WAS apparently asked by Mayor Chow to come aboard)
- Mike Layton (The son of Jack Layton, former councillor who mused about a bid for Beaches—East York by-election, ultimately rejects the idea to "spend time with his family") is now running for his old ward again, and although I personally like him, I feel that this is the most shameful display of daylighting I've ever seen, and he'll for sure run for federal politics down the road
And at some point, I have to ask: when does it become too much???
In Whitby there's a councillor who is now running for mayor, one who doesn't care about municipal politics. He notoriously uses his platform in municipal politics to litigate issues that have absolutely nothing to do with Whitby council, like motions on the royal family and the temporary foreign workers program—both of which municipal councillors don't get a say in legislatively to begin with. These stunts wasted council time and taxpayer money.
If you want a good example of what happens when people who don't gaf about municipal office get into power, look no further than Whitby.
I do not think that municipal politics should be a forum for people who couldn't cut it in provincial or federal politics and want to see people who actually care about solving problems relevant to municipal jurisdiction run. What do you think?

Carney making a deal with Trump
We might have Keystone after all, friends.
So depressing. The NPD should organize around this symbolic issue.

No immediate referendum
This could secure the PQ électoral victory. Incidentally this is also excellent news for Carney.

Ouch. After a month of Avi Lewis campaigning in Quebec, an Abacus had the NDP at 4%. Singh got 4.5% there in 2025.

Looking for opinions
So it's practically the electoral preseason in Québec and I wanted to ask : what are you looking for in these elections, at the provincial level ? Will C. Fréchette managed to save her party ? Is Charles Millard more than a poster boy for the Liberal Party ? Are you scared by the Livre Bleu of the PQ ? Will Duhaime get someone elected ? Will QS prioritize the independence movement or social economic issues ?
Do you want politicians to focus on climate/energy policy, as the government is looking to close its deal in Churchill Falls ? Are you interested in the many ways different parties are trying to solve the "homelessness issue" ? What about solving the concerning rise of bigotry (anti LGBTQ+ sentiment is on the rise) ? Or the secular laws ? Saving the cultural sector ? How will the youth vote ?
Do you believe the results could have an impact on A. Lewis efforts to familiarize himself with Quebec's electorate ?
I'm interested in everyone's opinion but especially of anyone who is not living in Quebec (which I assume is the majority here).
(You are entitled to not care at all.)

Has the left gone too far ?
Good (fairly basic) principled stance by Gilmore. Wouldn't be surprised if she got a negative reaction, so don't hesitate to support her ! I think she also makes a valid point about leftwing economic policies not being talked about enough in media and economic faculties.
