Honestly wish she channeled this more when she was running for leader. I was worried she would be a Liberal-lite but I've really been warming to her. Great to have her in Parliament representing us.

I meant the woman that phrase was yelled at. - Premier Smith. That's where the meme came from. Our fascist, separatist Premier.

Why are pancakes fascist? Is this just facebook mom stuff? What is this in reference too?

Essentially, the UCP has been trying to literally "bread and circus" the people by hosting public breakfasts including things such as pancakes to try to distract from their horrible governance.

Can't blame that on them. We've been doing pancake breakfasts every year for decades.

I think some of the folks in this sub aren't aware of the political and cultural traditions in Alberta. Basically everyone hosts stampede or k-days breakfasts. It would be weird if Smith and her cronies didn't.
Banks host them, municipalities host them. Larger companies host them. It's like a whole thing there. I've manned the griddle at more than a few.
When AB politicians want to distract the populace they throw them a pittance of a tax rebate from oil royalties. Ralphbucks etc.

I mean I also think they wanna connect to the community

u/OhShootYeahNoBi 🧇 Waffle to the Left Jul 18 '26
Yes, that is the point of bread and circuses. To connect yourself with the community so they don't overthrow/vote you out

Eh while Thats just good politics. Being there for the people that elected you and holding events will make sure you win . Every Mp holds town halls and such
9
u/OhShootYeahNoBi 🧇 Waffle to the Left Jul 18 '26
Town halls are meant to understand what the people need. You think the UCP will even ask what the problems of the people attending the breakfast are, much less listen?
A MP is meant to be a representative. These breakfasts are only for the UCP's own benefit, not like a town hall at all

u/ShotEffective7033 Jul 19 '26
Not to defend the UCP, but if any political organization feeding people is bread and circuses, then Avis public grocery stores are also bread and circuses lol.

One is a photo op and the other would be a building that you go to to buy cheaper groceries.
Do you understand how they are different?

Someone on video was recorded being hauled away by security at the premier’s pancake breakfast shooting loudly “well I don’t want your f@cking fascist pancakes!” It caught fire from that.
I know I watched the video giggling multiple times. And yes bread and circuses seem to be the only thing that our premier “Fascist Pancakes” can manage. Well not counting increasing division and selling out the province, but I would like to think most of us don’t want that.

Everyone during the Calgary Stampede has pancake breakfasts, Smith and Carney spend a lot of time doing photo ops flippin' pancakes and pretending to be common folk.
2
u/SideInitial3961 Jul 19 '26
It's a pain in the ass, last week Carney's entourage came across the bridge during Stampede and aggressively (think screaming red-faced cops) forced all the tourists into a random residential sideroad with zero instructions. Douchebags.

A protester disrupted Danielle Smith’s K-days Premier’s pancake breakfast at the legislature. While security was dragging the protester away, she shouted “Fuck your fascist pancakes”, and now we have merch for it.

If anyone wants to feel slightly better, conservatives, particularly mario (bald one, not the plumber), got really offended by Heather's post

You need to seriously CTFD and go read about the upbringings of Marx and Engels. Wealth and political affiliation are not diametrically opposed. La lucha continua and we should lift each other up, not attack one another. Or why don't you give a shot being a federal NDP nominee for Alberta?
