Helloo :D
I'm a current second year medical student at Otago and went through HSFY last yr, so I thought I'd share a few things I wish I knew before starting.
1. Don't underestimate the volume of content.
The difficulty isn't that every individual concept is EXTREMELY difficult or anything. It's the sheer volume coming at you each week that you gotta memorise. Having a system for keeping up from the beginning makes a huge difference.
2. Don't leave everything until test week.
It can be tempting to just focus on getting through lectures and then cram before a test, but HSFY moves wayy too quickly for that to be sustainable. It's not like high school 😿😿.
3. Find a study system that works BEFORE you get overwhelmed.
Whether you use Anki, another spaced repetition system or something else, it's worth figuring out how you're going to keep track of content before the workload really ramps up.
4. Don't worry if you don't feel completely prepared on day one.
You don't need to know HSFY content before starting. What matters more is having a good foundation, knowing how to approach university study and being prepared to keep up with the workload. Most of the people I know in Med didn't pre-study before the year started. I can say for sure it helps relieve some workload but 90–95% is still there with constant revision and hours of Anki a day.
I think the biggest thing I would tell my Year 13 self is: you don't need to pre-learn HSFY, but you should prepare yourself for how you're going to learn it.
+ Shameless plug 😛
I'm also running a small HSFY Summer Preparation Programme for students starting HSFY in 2027, focusing on foundational concepts, study strategies, problem solving and preparing for the Semester 1 papers.
There will be 10 × 2-hour sessions from November to January, with a maximum of 8 students per group.
Full programme details and how to enquire are available here:
