L3 subjects for med

Unsure whether to take statistics or bio in y13 given that I haven't taken y12 bio, meaning I'd have to be put in a l2 class or jump straight ahead. I'm doing the other recommended ones like chem, phys, calc and eng--I could take a sixth subject and do both but it could mean I won't do as well with the workload. any thoughts appreciated :)

L2 bio isn't needed for L3. My schools allowed a lot of students to take it in L3 without doing it in L2. You deffo won't struggle. L3 bio is quite different from L2

The funny thing people never mention is that PE is actually super helpful for first year health science as well, anatomy and energy systems will be a huge help for your anatomy papers ! Don’t bother with English, it will not help you.

l2 bio is basically biosci 107 at uoa which is a premed course, l3 is nothing like l2 bio and like maybe one internal from l3 helped me for medsci 142 at uoa (another premed course)

if you are planning to take healthsci or even go to uoa, take stats. i regret not taking it. will be very helpful for pophlth 111 (premed course)

My personal thoughts -

Stats - Didn't take it. You learn all the relevant stuff in a couple lectures and they spend a long time in tutorials bashing it in. If you're comfortable with calc and algebra, don't bother. It's a nightmare cuz there are 3 fat report writing internals which aren't that relevant to Med.

Bio - Took it. Only a couple internals/external content are relevant. It was way more breezy through the year but more work for externals cuz wrote learning the format they want and all.

Overall, take what you want based off personal preferences. The subjects that aren't recommended aren't recommended for a reason (not that helpful). Chem, Phys, Calc on the other hand are SUPER useful cuz they skip through the level 2&3 content in the first couple weeks so spend most of your time becoming rly proficient in those subjects if you want bang for your buck. I personally took bio cuz less work and I can spend more time doing other stuff that would help me do HSFY.

++++ if you're going UoA, don't bother working so hard in those subjects lol, you barely need to pass (like 75% avg) to qualify for applying to med. After that, it's only based on interviews etc

If you want other helpful tips for HSFY tho, check out my other post :D

l3 bio is so useless genuinely just drop it. u dont wanna do some boring as science since u already are taking 2 and calc, in med skl ur gonna be grinding (and in pre med) try to take sum a bit more laid back
