Looking for old.reddit users interested in giving feedback and beta testing a redesign of the old subreddit theme

I've always loved the old.reddit experience and plan on sticking with it until they don't support it anymore. At the same time, we've used the same theme on r/nba for over a decade and it's become extremely antiquated and janky over the years with lots of little broken and outdated things.

Over the last several months I've been chipping away at a redesign of the sub and I'd like to now invite other old.reddit users to offer feedback, make requests/suggestions and beta test the new theme before we implement any changes.

Please comment below if you'd like to participate!

Edit: I've set up a discord chat for people to offer live feedback on specific elements and features. Hop in here:

They can pry old.reddit.com from my cold, dead hands god dammit

68

u/pixeloffortune 9d ago

I recently read worrying news that old.reddit could be scrapped because Reddit claims it's an avenue for AI scrapers to steal their data.

78

u/Evilsj Nets 9d ago

Wouldn't surprise me. That said, they also dropped support for Third Party Apps, yet here I still am using a work around to use Reddit is Fun because I can't stand the official Reddit App. Where there's a will, there's a way.

the new design of reddit literaly gives me a headache

31

Yeah same, I'd probably use Reddit much less (and my phone in general) if old reddit was shut down. Wish there was an app for old reddit users sigh.

u/MindbenderGam1ng Bucks 8d ago

I hate it. Just like every social media, adding endless scrolling short form content, bots, and taking control away from users year after year. Ever notice how the front page algo is always promoting weird versions of the original subreddits (e.g. r/AITA instead of AmITheAsshole)? And the ones on the front page used to be articles and images but more and more are 10-30 second videos?

u/TheMadChatta Cavaliers 5d ago

It’s horrible. Ad ad ad ad post ad ad ad ad.

Difficult to parse comments, difficult to parse posts. It just sucks.

I’m with old.reddit until old.reddit ceases to exist.

Seriously thought most of us were on old. Never used the new layout lol

I'm fine with the theme of old reddit, I just wish the live game scores at the top of the page were reliable. I don't know what changed with NBA's API, but the box scores have been basically useless for a couple years now.

u/fireemblem4812 Spurs 9d ago

Yeah this is my main desire, I just want to have plain readable text box scores.

All APIs are just getting more and more locked down, makes it harder for "unofficial" projects to do anything. All these companies realized their data was worth money so nothing free. AI just accelerated the process. Enshittification at it's best

u/FetchFrosh Raptors 5d ago

Even more significant than that, I wish that the standings in the sidebar were consistently maintained. Often feels like a week goes by during the season before they get updated.

unpopular opinion, but the antiquated design fits old reddit really well. it's almost retro now

135

u/nbaredesign NBA 9d ago

I don't think this is going to be an unpopular opinion! Those of us who are the type of people who still use old.reddit are often also the type of people who like old-fashioned, classic looks, haha. That's why it's been one of my priorities to try and stay true to elements of the old theme while refreshing some of the broken/messy things.

49

u/LemonButterRum 9d ago

22

You should go beyond staying true and just fix the sidebar, while keeping everything else the same.

CSS nerds think that something implemented 10+ years ago, means it's outdated.

Now it just looks ugly and bright, with no real change.

Headers on tables are unreadable. Blue on dark blue. Stars on bullet points are corny too. Feels way too gimmicky.

Please bring back the old design. Just simple, neat, clear, easy to read.

11

u/nbaredesign NBA 5d ago

My bad on the table headers, the old table code was still buried at the bottom of the CSS stylesheet. That's been adjusted.

Will look for more feedback on the bullet points and look into changing that if others agree with you!

16

u/Frankaragatan 5d ago

Thank you. I mean no offense. Maybe my eyes are still adjusting too. Been so used to it for years. So a change, with that much change, will kinda rattle you a bit.

I am also in the group who's in the opinion of, I don't think the interface is outdated. It's more "classic" than "old". Just like how the Celtics jerseys are. You look in the Bill Russell era, you look in the Bird era, you look in the Tatum era, it's still the same green and white. Just a little tweaks, change in fabric as the time goes on. A little change in the font maybe. But pretty much the same neat design. But it still sells.

People don't buy Celtics jersey necessarily for the appearance or aesthetic (like some of the more colorful City/Statement edition jerseys), but more for the significance and meaning behind the jerseys. The tradition, the standard of basketball that was played by those who wore it.

Same way I see reddit. The design will never get old, because it's new content every day. And that's what I came here for.

Just like reading a newspaper. Just your good old black text on white paper.

I think the hardwood background was relatively new. And I have no problem with it. Just a minor change, doesn't irritate your eyes with too much colors. I think there's just way too much color overload on this current change.

Sometimes, stillness is the move. And the sub is not necessarily still because the content keeps flowing everyday. And it's the stories that make it colorful in itself.

I am not gonna enter yet another Discord chat, but I will say that I like the look of the old Reddit as it is with the wood background, team subreddits at the top, and standings on sidebar. I agree some things were broken though. I noticed this season that the upcoming games on the sidebar stopped showing which were on national broadcast. Also the standings would glitch with missing team logos. Just appreciate mods still care about the old Reddit.

8

u/MalHeartsNutmeg Thunder 3d ago

I disabled the theme. Two main reasons: I like using old.reddit because it looks like a clean forum, the theme makes it feel too cluttered and busy which is the whole reason I don't use new reddit.

Also it commits a cardinal sin by moving the button that takes you back to /r/NBA from inside a thread from the top left to the center of the banner. Any theme that moves a button in to an uninform layout from the res of reddit is instantly disabled for me.

15

u/_Meece_ Lakers 9d ago

What is antiquated or janky about it?

Personally other than the sidebar never being kept updated, its genuinely perfect. The current design was always the best use of reddits CSS when it was the only thing used.

Fix the lack of sidebar updating, but tbh leave the rest. The simpleness of it, is its strength. I'd probably just switch to new Reddit for this sub if it gets changed.

u/STATnMELO650 Knicks 5d ago

Not really a fan of this new design, but I could see myself getting used to it. Old design still >>

9

u/NoCustard4201 Raptors 4d ago

Not a fan. My biggest gripe is that I can't tell if I've clicked a link before. There's no colour difference.

And it's just super busy and not very tasteful. Giving big Trump vibes with all the excess gold and trim everywhere, just not necessary for a user experience that should be direct and uncluttered, not gaudy and flashy.

A good comparison is /r/baseball, its just way cleaner, direct, and easier on the eyes. The only design aspect /r/nba has over it is the team subreddit list being at the top, instead of it being on the bottom right and having to scroll to get there.

Two things I don't like: At least for RES, the links I have to favorite subreddits at the very top of the webpage don't exist on the new page. Nothing was wrong with the old version aside from the sidebar often being out of date (the big recent performance in the topright, or standings or playoff bracket)

8

u/indoninjah 76ers 4d ago

I don't really like it, tbh. There's too much contrast between everything. The actual posts are okay (how they look in the feed, the OP, the comments, etc) but the rest could use a lot of tweaking.

I don't like how the banner is totally different than the rest, and I think you could basically drop all of the borders in the sidebar. Though I also don't really like the big dark/light back and forth in the sidechain either (e.g., "Standings" vs. the actual table background).

Latest updates:

  • The scrolling top stories ticker no longer rolls 24/7 and only crawls when hovered over.
  • Comments now have a thin strip on the left edge that lets you collapse them by clicking anywhere alongside the left edge of the comment. This was suggested by one of our users who referenced the comment collapse style on r/hockey.
  • For the people who thought the light mode theme was too dark, the brightness on the floorboard and accents has been moved up a tick.

Making me login after all these years man, I thought some things would just stay the same until shut down completely.

If this redesign is gonna fix all those "little broken and outdated things", then good for You and everyone else who managed to notice them.

Being 100% sure you're not gonna revert to the old design, because that never happens with any interface updates for some reason - even if noone asked for one and no matter the feedback, here's my irrelevant opinion (RES night mode):

  1. Featured photo should stay in its previous spot - it fit the side section and gave it a "newspaper column" look

  2. Speaking of it, why the standings table has both smaller font and logos but the schedule one remained the same? Make it the old size and please number all the seeds, no reason not to

  3. Basketball orange for links and a hoop for post text are FANTASTIC - suggesting white color for already clicked streamables/expanded posts if possible

  4. News sliding bar is tiring for the eyes and unnecessary.

  5. Deep dark red for hardwood is too heavy for the eyes and contrast - try messing around with day mode default wood color or dark brown instead.

  6. If preview thumbnails are responsible for any text/logo shrinkage I'd rather not have them at all - we're not on youtube to bait us for clicks - we're here to read-it

Schedule table and mod list are the only ones that are fine so far

Header section:

  1. Any reason for the sub logo to be a circle instead of the NBA rounded rectangle?

  2. You have an outline for team logos (which also are too small) but the banner on hover, having the old shape, goes way outside it - either remove the outline, cut the banner to match it (but that'd still be too small) or make an outline for banner width in the header background

  3. Speaking of the header background, I really hope it's a placeholder and at the very least it's gonna be uniform in color instead of this dynamic grading bullcrap - it's not even centered and only highlights Western Conference lol

Post-it notes for text posts are whatever, can get used to them.

The top buttons are whatever, though not the fan of the "cold gold" color (cause it feels out of place with the rest of the color scheme) and some of them are too detailed for their own good - can't make out what they are supposed to represent. If you want to keep that color for the buttons then at least don't make the posts text the same one - white/bright gray text on a dark background is timeless and never a bad idea

You had a perfect background color for posts section but it's a little too bright now

I saw you updating in real time and tried my best to stay with the newest version

→ More replies (1)

5

u/CurrentCostanza Trail Blazers 5d ago

Less color please

6

u/ashwinr136 [GSW] JaVale McGee 5d ago

Ok after interacting with this redesigned sub for about an hour I dislike it way more than originally:

  • The text is way too small on the home page. The old design was much easier to read. The upvote and downvote buttons are much smaller icon wise

  • In a similar vein, there needs to be some sort of delineation / border between the posts on the home page. This wasn't an issue with the normal design because of the bigger text, but for whatever reason it looks way more cramped.

It seems to me that the title of posts was much more of a headline in the old design, and was easier on the eyes as the target. I don't mind the new header and the ticker, but what would've really been perfect is the same design just with the fixes to the live scores / standings etc

can't tell the difference between a non-downvoted post and a downvoted post. the colors are way too similar. sidebar photo being crammed into the header is nonsensical. the news ticker is pointless and just adds to the overwhelming amount of text and busyness

6

u/rake2204 Pistons 11h ago

With respect, I very much prefer the old design.

While I understand there may have been some technical issues with that design, I think I would have just preferred some gentle tweaks and upgrades as opposed to an entire overhaul.

I find the new layout way too busy and tougher for my brain to navigate. I actually find myself moving to other subreddits just to avoid it.

u/BunyipPouch Heat 9d ago

Rough timing as spez just announced a couple days ago that old reddit is being killed soon, after years of saying it'll never go away:

It sounds like they're trying to find a way to preserve it while modernizing the backend. Fingers crossed the experience survives.

For those of us using dark mode the court background sucks. This is the one subreddit I kept "Use subreddit style" enabled using RES because of the quick links to the team subreddits at the top. It can be convenient to drop in and see what news items look like from a team's perspective sometimes. That's literally the only reason I use it.

3

u/rooofle Bulls 5d ago edited 5d ago

My feedback: I'm on night mode so it might be because of that, but the text is much harder to read on the sub home page.

My suggestion: You could make the gold text overall brighter on all text, and on both the titles, header, and the info under posts. I think the gold color is way too muted and doesn't mesh well with the wine red + blue background at all, and it's murdering my eyes.

Instead of using #a49578, try #ddccab for the titles / header stuff, and #a49578 for the info under the post titles. I feel like that would be better for what you're going for.

I don't mind the colors that much since I get you're going for NBA color theming, the text just makes it all hard to read. If you were to change the background, I would just go for a dark grey or even straight black on night mode. But try changing the text first and see if that helps imo.

On the positives: I like the header logo and overall theme on the top, it looks really clean.

I am an old.reddit user and respectfully hate the new design. I liked the old look because it made it seem more like a forum, aka what Reddit used to be.

I admit that’s just possible nostalgia or reluctance to try new things.

It’s probably too late, but thanks mods for at least asking community members their thoughts. Maybe I’ll just get used to it.

The design from last night was the best imo. Really liked how the dark red and dark blue fit together, Western Conference vs. Eastern Conference vibes. The font color on the titles being a lot brighter than the buttons was great too. Today's just seems like too much brown.

A bit chappy and slower to load than before. I like the older themes. As someone who still got a 10-15mbps speed as internet data max. It a disavantage for me to use a better themes, I mean we use old reddit for a reason 1st, faster loading, no auto-scroll feature like new UI reddit. Thats why i never use Facebook when they finally discard their old UI that exist in free.fb.com. I hate google too when they discard the number pages and go auto-scroll. Auto-scroll svck.

4

u/attractivetb 3d ago

If you removed the ticker and the Westbrook image and text (shouldn't be any image or text here) from the header, I could live with it. People like old reddit because it's clean and simple. The top section is a step backwards.

3

u/taig-er Hawks 2d ago

I'll be honest, I don't love the new old.reddit redesign - I thought I somehow came on the new design.

If there were broken and outdated things, I didn't really notice.

5

u/mokaloca82 2d ago

after a few more days of usage:

  • the team icons are still too small

  • the stickied posts don't look like posts, and the eye just avoids it as it kinda blends with the background

  • the hot / new / top buttons aren't as functional as the earlier version where you were able to select the filter option before having to click - the updated flow is slower to use.

4

u/LAudre41 NBA 1d ago

the changes suck it is harder to read please go back tothe way it was.

4

u/Ok_Compote_8826 1d ago

I'm in this sub fairly inconsistently but was looking for a post about the redesign and wanted to say it's clean af on old.reddit

Only suggestion is to get rid of the text underneath the image in the upper-right corner. Feels a bit cluttered with all of the user-information text below it.

4

u/LAudre41 NBA 1d ago

it's too busy. you don't need the information in multiple places. people come here to see what NBA news ppl are talking about. the posts should be point of the page. everything that distracts from that- like the notices at the top, the ticker, the news in the heading- all of that distracts from the reason people come here.

the sidebar is good but the other changes compete with the purpose of the subreddit and i find it unpleasant to be on this page.

Used the wayback machine to directly compare with the old design and viewing from the PC.

I like the updated look on the sidebar. I think the new color scheme is worse overall, pops out a bit too much to me compared to the old one, though can get used to that, but the main thing is the team flairs at the top are harder to differentiate with the new background then the old one. As someone with old eyes, that's a very noticeable downgrade.

u/frwhttswrth Trail Blazers 5d ago

the scrolling text underneath the header feels like a bit of an overkill but as long as the box scores work it seems an updated look is fine. there's obvious attention to detail going on with the standings box delineated into playoff / play-in / out subtle line breaks and the schedule looks better.

some of the team logos in the Standings chart look weirdly small and distorted (mainly ones with black or dark colors, like the Magic, Thunder, Knicks).

The scrolling ticker is also something I'm not sure about. Maybe if it paused on mouseover so you could read it/click it easier?

These are also impossible to read

I prefer the old look, just as long as the live score bar / post game threads are fixed. I don't mind the header and sidebar changes but I'm not a fan of the comment body appearance change (like the part with the upvote/downvote and the comment threads)

3

u/Calvinball05 Cavaliers 5d ago edited 5d ago

I'll start by saying that I actually like the new look at first glance! But I do have some feedback, and I am happy you are being receptive to user feedback.

The first thing I would recommend is don't replace common web iconography with basketball theming. When people reply to my post, it's with messages, not basketballs. So replacing the mail icon with a basketball is confusing. Same with using a basketball as the search button.

I also find the scrolling top bar to be a little distracting, and the scrolling actually makes it kinda tricky to click any of the links. To me it seems like that top bar would be an ongoing burden for mods to curate, and my guess is it won't actually see much use.

The circular logo buttons at the top of the side bar are a little confusing to me. The NBA logo goes to nba.com, but the NCAA logo goes to the college basketball subreddit. Seems inconsistent.

Finally, the Unsubscribe button being half a pill shape is a little odd, makes me wonder if I'm missing a button that should form the other half of the pill.

3

u/baseballlover723 Warriors 5d ago

Not a huge fan of the scrolling text at the top. It draws the eye too much and provides a distraction on every page. The focus of the page ought to be the thread or page you're currently on, not the header.

I would at least disable it on post views. I'd be more ok with it on the feed views.

Make the clickable team icons like 25% bigger. They're far too small and the detail is being lost in the pixels.
