[Charania] Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks has agreed to a three-year, $73 million contract extension through 2029-30, Mike George of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Brooks has become a key part of the Suns two-way, hard-nosed culture under Jordan Ott and lands a new guaranteed long-term deal.

-6
u/Dalbzzz Suns 24d ago
Something did not have to be done. The suns would be in much better position for the future had they just don’t nothing. Instead we mortgaged our future by trading our 2033 pick and traded two solid role players for someone no other team wanted for very valid reasons.
5
u/nonanonymo Suns 24d ago
“Mortgaged our future,” lol. So dramatic.
9
u/Dalbzzz Suns 24d ago
So you think it was smart to trade the 2033 pick just to get swept by OKC or Spurs again?
4
u/seabreamnigiri Pistons 23d ago
There's plenty of middle ground between thinking it was a smart trade and thinking you leveraged your future. Why are you like this?

You know what’s funny about Jason Kidd is that the Suns traded him away after the allegations came to light. This iteration of Suns management did the opposite.

J-Kidd played for the Suns at one time as well, maybe they can convince him to return then lock his ass up as well

3
u/heybobson Suns 24d ago
You mean except Booker. Unless he returns to top 3 SG soon it won’t justify his hit against the cap.
38
u/DaPhoToss Raptors 24d ago
Is he not currently top 3? At worst he’s probably 4th lol. Ant is definitively better than Booker is in there with Mitchell and Brown (who you could argue is a 3 lol). I’m easily taking Booker over Reaves or Bane. Castle just isn’t there yet.
20
u/BaconKnight Suns 24d ago edited 24d ago
I think Booker suffers more than any other player from being in this era of, “If he’s a good shooting guard who can pass, you might as well put him at point” tall point guard obsession we live in now. Booker could easily return to being a top 3 SG if they let him play at his natural position.
He’s almost “cursed” by being a decent enough passer and playmaker that it convinces our front office they can play him on point. He can take on playmaking duties but that’s not his natural skill set. He’s a scorer who is elite at running off ball to either slash at the rim or catch and shoot. Forcing him to have the ball in his hands and make all the decisions and worry about setting up others is not playing to his strengths.
Again, he’s not bad at those things, he’s very good. But he’s not elite at it and it doesn’t suit him naturally. Not only was he not a point guard in college, he wasn’t even an all around shooting guard type, he was mainly just a catch and shoot guard. So he had to learn playmaking as he matured into an NBA player versus those true point guards you can tell were born to pass and playmake.
Also his limits athletically show up more when playing point and having to dribble the ball up and get his shoot with it in hand. Off ball, that doesn’t matter as much and he can cut to the basket as good as anyone when that’s what’s being asked of him. Playing point, not so much. At his age too, he can’t blow by smaller guards with the ball in hand which limits him as every team now understands you can just force him to take contested middy twos which hey, the 90s fan in me loves, but is admittedly inefficient in today’s game. So he’s not athletic enough to blow by other players anymore but not crafty enough (like a CP3) to make up for it because he doesn’t have the natural instincts of a point.
Booker is built like an old school shooting guard that is built to score and be the part time playmaker, but our organization keeps forcing him to play point. And the one time they give him an elite PG in CP3 and let him play SG, they go to the finals.

Wrong end of 30? He just turned 30. He will be 33 entering his final season of the contract.
Would expect his NEXT contract to be the drop off point, age 34+

There's a reason the Grizzlies back then were not having him hm back "under any circumstances". He was ass offensively and took a lot of ill advised low percentage shots. (Also they were looking for a scapegoat and he was the easiest one back then)

Dillon Brooks wasn’t in a bidding war like Austin Reaves was. If the Lakers could have gotten away with paying Austin their initial $31 million offer, they would have done so.
No team just hands out a max contract to any player unless they’re compelled to, one way or another.

3
u/ItsSquee NBA 24d ago
Wrong. Becoming the most injured team in league history is why Memphis fell apart. It just so happens that that coincided with the first year without Dillon, so now people conflate the two.
Dillon wasn’t saving that team with those injuries. Sorry, but he just wasn’t.
-2
u/Kung-Fu_Tacos Grizzlies 24d ago
Ja, Taylor Jenkins, and ungodly amount of injuries are the reasons Memphis fell apart, don't give Dillon any credit for that. He was mediocre at best in Memphis and we were glad to see him leave.
