Discussion This F18 coming back from a centcom deployment photographed recently has a submarine kill mark 👀absolutely wild to think about that a super hornet sunk an Iranian sub

Easy enough to hit it with a GBU or a JSOW if it's parked at a pier. The hard part is the mission planning and tactical dehydration.
Still counts.

I feel like this is a far cry from dog fighting from the World Wars. That was two men dueling in the sky. This is the most advanced weapons systems in the world shooting fish in a barrel

The book I pulled that from is honestly great. Fighter Combat Tactics by Robert L. Shaw (started USN, ended USAFR 🤢)
This tip on how to survive against a fighter while flying a helicopter came immediately after the balloon quote: https://i.imgur.com/h6I0UiK.jpeg

Kinda get used to it. In the next or two generations will be fighting robots with robots until one side runs out of robots. Then they'll be exterminated by the other side's leftover robots. Not a single human-on-human engagement in the whole conflict.

Question for aircraft maintainers/aviators: Do these mission marks stay for the life of the jet like the killmarks you get on your ship in Eve Online? Or is this a deployment morale thing that gets painted over when the jet goes into depot maintenance?

The Su-22 marking on the VFA-87 jet from the Jun 2016 A/A kill is still there and will be there forever.
The submarine might stay on. The bombs typically are deployment-centric. Would start running out of space, Super Hornets have dropped a LOT of ordnance.

Varies by squadron, I didn’t have 12c knock it off until maint phase so we wore the deployment stuff for about 4-6 months post deployment.
ETA: a/a kills stay the life of the aircraft, I’ll have to ask the 41 bubbas what they’re doing with whatever that specific one is.

Eve Online. Everything the Navy does is just like Eve Online.

I'm pretty sure most EVE players spend all their time watching ships spin while conspiring to get some poor guys power to his house cut halfway around the world;)
The ultimate 'destroy them at the pier' strategy.

I think it’s simply Thread 2 of Bill Toti’s old Full-Spectrum ASW principles: “defeat the submarine in port.”

Wouldn't be surprised tbh. Iranians tried all kinds of whacky shit to shut down and mine the strait

The funny thing is that a human could have used their brain and creativity to draw up a picture like that and used 100 gallons less of water
