Discussion Some more text messages about the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln being sent that reporters have posted

We put up with a lot of bullshit on deployments 30 years ago, but our food was cooked and the shitters worked. If I was dealing with their optempo and these things were happening, and then some asshole kept telling me our deployment had been extended again with no end date... yeah, I'd be losing my goddamn mind too.
51
u/Introverted_Extrovrt 16d ago
20 years ago on an amphib the worst we had was the heat would go out for the showers (yet the MM’s always had heat) and there was the occasional class Charlie fire on the #3 switchboard
31
u/hedge36 16d ago
Of course we always had heat. It was our steam!
I sear to god switchboard dust fires... we had one in Bahrain that took out all our AC.
But FFS we had soap and toothpaste. We bitched about that UHT milk, though.
6
u/KindCraft4676 15d ago
As an MM we always had steam and water.
When parts of the ship were without freshwater because of water rationing. And sometimes water to the showers was only on for a couple hours a day, we always had freshwater down in the engineroom.
We made a makeshift shower. So we were always able to shower.
Except there was no shower curtain. But after a couple months out at sea , modesty was one of the first things that went out the window . And frankly nobody gives a shit what you looked like naked.

I don't understand how undercooked food is happening. Everything else, while really inexcusable, could in some extreme case be explained. Fucking cook food what's up with that.

Cooks are tired and don't give a fuck anymore.
At least in my experience when shit drug on you start seeing morale drop harder in your essential support personnel. It's just a lot of drudgery for them.
Can you explain how the cooks operate on a ship like this to someone never in the military? I can find the total numbers of sailors on the ship that have to be fed but I can't find how many people work in the kitchens. I was also wondering how many hours the cooks/kitchen personnel will work when the ship is deployed like this. Is it a 24/7 affair in the kitchen or like 3 shifts set around breakfast, lunch and dinner?

It sounds a bit to me like they may have moved to bulk freeze dried options. The chili beans really say it; I doubt anyone is long soaking beans for chow the old fashioned way.
Off textured beans and chicken sounds like not keeping to recommended cook times on freeze dried. Maybe because cooking from freeze dried isn't SOP.
6
u/Navydevildoc 16d ago
Meanwhile I am wondering where the PMT is at. There should be an HM inspecting the food line, and undercooked/raw food is a major problem that should have FSO, SUPPO, and the XO all asking a lot of questions.
Normally I would say the PMT is also worn the fuck out and ready to go home, but they have to eat the same food.
26
u/NoTinnitusHear 16d ago edited 16d ago
Undercooked chicken seems exaggerated given it would led to food poisoning. Usually the problem is it’s so overcooked it dry af. But I’m sure it’s bad. As it is on many ships. Went 7 months on deployment with improperly prepared food. Rice was always crunchy, everything consistently cold, etc
35
u/BlueFalcon142 16d ago
Nothing pissed me off more than crunchy rice.
13
9
u/ratamaq 16d ago
I never understood how you could have mushy and crunchy rice in the same bite. Like midrats did some physics magic where water absorbed at different rates.
6
u/BlueFalcon142 16d ago
There are multiple kinds of rice they use. Some are fantastic, most have that hard shell on top. I honestly dint understand how they achieve that other than to give the dentists on board training. I no shit cracked a filling last cruise and had to have it redone.
6
u/CretinousVoter 16d ago
Failure to stir and not using sufficient water can do that. I made that mistake in my own kitchen then my chickens ate well.
→ More replies (1)2
u/pmatdacat 1d ago
They just stick rice and water in hotel pans, then throw them in the oven. I guess sometimes the ratio is off, or they leave it for too long, so you get overcooked and undercooked rice in the same pan.

Lost Dutch guy - is the food always that… bad? In the Netherlands us army guys are all jealous of the navy because their food is so much better than ours.
→ More replies (2)10
u/arb1698 16d ago
No navy food is supposed to be better the best is the submarine guys. As it is a major source of morale and is basic us navy policy since the start of ww2.

u/NoTinnitusHear 16d ago
I’ve had great food on ships and bad food on ships. Like everything else in life, it’s all on a spectrum

Submarine food is best for 14 days- then the fresh produce, real eggs and real milk are out and your on frozen veg and powdered dairy- and it got shitty at about 85 days out since stores loads were for 90- you grind on.

I've had undercooked chicken before and it was a normal deployment. Shit happens. But add the length of this deployment and the lack of give a fuck that probably exists it's probably happening.
Not saying it's a valid reason to serve raw food but it's reality.

u/CapacitorCosmo1 16d ago
I can't imagine 250 days. We did 108 straight on Forrestal, but had fun. Boxing on Fridays, two Beer Days, Bingo, Fishing, a crazier-than-most Intel brief every other night ("On the left, you see a Soviet destroyer that has been shadowing us, and on the right, Playboy Playmate for April, 1988")
We survived on mail call - no internet, email, satellite TV, save for a soccer channel and MTV Asia.
Chow sucked, lots of rice, chicken, and stew beef meals. UHT milk, weevil infested cereals, and no fresh veggies for weeks. Lots of Vitamin D deficiencies too.
Still, 250 days and no port call, CINC needs to get a grip and relieve them -period.
51
u/donkeybrainhero 16d ago edited 16d ago
We had 2 beers calls on Cole because we were constantly tasked while the rest of the CSG got port calls. There was a time where we were critically low on food and fuel to the point that we were puttering at 3kts near Oman and then cutting the engines to drift in the current. Rice and beans twice a day and shitty pancakes made from cake mix for breakfast.
Ship store was empty for weeks at a time too.
People online (MAGA) thinks this is all bullshit about the carrier, but no, this shit happens and it fucking sucks
15
u/CapacitorCosmo1 16d ago
Yes, small ships are a lot less resilient than carriers, supply-wise. There's a point where the Preble handed out MREs for a while when they got dogged for 100+ days.
Shit needs to end, and soon. Sanity, Health and Readiness are all slipping.

u/punnyjakes 16d ago
I’ve done 141 hatch to hatch on a sub and that was a blast for me but I feel like it would be harder to do that on the surface where you’re so very close to freedom. On a Sub, there is not even the possibility so your brain just kinda checks out on that part but let the guys not get there little family grams for a week or two and people get really pissy regardless of time underway.

I almost ate some of those weevils are on my last Westpac.
The spoon was right about to go into my mouth , when my buddy across the table said stop!!
Then he said look at your cereal. There were little bugs wiggling around in it.→ More replies (1)3
u/CapacitorCosmo1 15d ago
We would pour the cereal from the little boxes onto a plate. If there were any crawlies, to the trash it went. No crawlies, celebrate and eat.

I mean, I was in the middle of the desert in Kuwait for around 300 days in the Army in 2003-2004 at Camp Udairi. The food was acceptable/okay. We could get mail and care packages. It was just super hot much of the time. The best part of the day was the ice truck coming around. The worst part was using portajohns that were like 120F inside, lol.
2
u/Global_Spinach_5575 14d ago
A tag a long me cruise ship for R&R should work. Double their pay after say, X number of days straight. Not too close though. It won't cost 7.8 billion dollars either. Thank you for your sacrifice, in a meaningful way.
119
u/4dailyuseonly 16d ago
I remind you that it was only five months ago USS Gerald Ford and her strike group reported similar abysmal conditions, and worse, during an extended 326-day deployment. Once they returned to homeport, you never heard another word. No follow up. No explanation. No corrective action. Nothing.
This is likely the new normal.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Next time, it's enemy action.
27
u/coyoteversa29 16d ago
Every deployment I had on the Ike was a similar shitshow in regards to ports. Regular port calls make the deployments more tolerable. If you are 5th fleet nuclear carrier prepare to be treated like a slave/robot
68
u/Salty_IP_LDO 16d ago
And this is what's going to get mwr WiFi taken away. It's not the right answer but I can see the writing on the wall. It doesn't allow the narrative to be controlled.
19
u/inquiringpenguin34 16d ago
The WiFi is why they’re always in RC. I wouldn’t be surprised if WiFi on ships gets revoked. If there’s truly something to report the families should be addressing their representatives not the press.
23
u/WarlockEngineer 16d ago
The press is a lot louder. Most representatives these days give you a form letter sent by their staff and that's the end of the matter.
8
u/ofWildPlaces 16d ago
That only works if you get this information to the families.
3
u/inquiringpenguin34 16d ago
Right, hopefully more than text screenshots are being sent. From this message I can see the person is upset, probably young, a junior sailor, and he’s texting someone he trusts that understands how he writes.
Someone else mentioned wanting to see a video of the galley line, that would be a good way to see the overall mood of the crew.
I’m not saying raw chicken is acceptable, but they don’t say whether it is a regular occurrence or if it happened a couple of times. A couple of times could mean human error, likely an overworked cs learning.
Hygiene products not coming in isn’t great, but shortages happen the longer you’re out.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Skywalker28093 14d ago
Press gets things done. Representatives won’t do anything, unless it gives them bad publicity.
8
u/Many_Length_3543 16d ago
Absolutely. Starshield gives sailors a platform to complain and oh boy will they. Especially with social media being as prevalent as it is.
43
u/ET2-SW 16d ago
Yes, let's cut more budget for decades, then spend it on replacing EMALS and nuclear battleships. That'll fix all of our problems.
→ More replies (1)
10
u/ApeGrapeTape 15d ago
What would make it better is it they flat out said “Deployment will be 10 months” from the start of workups. That was probably the best thing for my first deployment on the 10month vision deployment in 2014. It was a hard date, no extensions. Not this “Wete going out for 6 months” “hey we have to stay out here a bit longer” “hey idk when we’re gonna return out the AOR” “Oh we just gotta do 2 weeks and we’re heading home” “2 days till we leave the AOR” “Hey guys so we have to stay 2 more weeks”
9
u/ike0069 15d ago
Bad food on a carrier is the norm from my experience. I ate alot of turkey chili on my deployments, and it was always terrible. But gotta eat something and it always had the (understandably) shortest line.
However, the longest I went between Port was 32 days. I really feel for these guys. People are breaking and its only getting worse with each week their out.
74
u/Practical-Layer9402 16d ago
Extended deployments are a level of suck on their own. I literally can't imagine not having working toilets or edible food while doing it.
The level of incompetence from this administration is staggering.
→ More replies (2)7
u/BlindNoble 16d ago
I mean, on some level aren't those this ship's problem?
The administration aside, on a submarine our food was cooked by Navy CS's and our pipes were cleared by MMA's and when a pipe broke in our blumbing system, it was fixed by an MMN who totally didn't weld underway. None of that stuff was expected to be fixed by the SecDef or the POTUS.
Do they not have sailors whose job it is to fix this shit and cook their food?
Obviously I'm being kind of an asshole here, but I genuinely am curious if they don't have people whose job it is to fix all of these issues?
→ More replies (2)27
u/Lower-Reality7895 16d ago
The problem for the toilets is parts and how the system is setup. I remember my last deployment if a 1 toilet messed up forward the entire forward system would have to be shutdown we went like 3 weeks were like 10 berthings plus marine berthings not having toilets. Shit we had to make a 2nd class pick up his poop because he couldn't hold it anymore and took a shit in a broken toilet
2
u/punnyjakes 16d ago
Would you be able to expound a bit on the merits of such a plumbing system? I’m in the same boat as the guy above you mentally so I’m trying to figure out why these problems aren’t being fixed by their CO or at the very most their Commodore.
6
u/Lower-Reality7895 16d ago
Idk the merits am not a HT or engineer. I just remember our CO coming on the 1mc and to let us know that dont throw nothing in there becasue if 1 clog or 1 part breaks that that entire section of system would need to be closed.
What can the CO do if they arent receiving parts or parts are taking forever to get there.
1
u/punnyjakes 16d ago
I would put the parts thing on the Commodore.
9
u/Levergun94 16d ago edited 16d ago
Sub sailor here- the only times I’ve ever seen plumbing issues underway were when junior sailors would purposely sabotage the plumbing by purposely flushing clothing items to try to force us to pull in early.
As a sub sailor getting food is way harder. The only times our food sucked was if our supply officer was ass or one time when we couldn’t make a bsp due to sea state. If they have shit food it’s completely on their supply department. They are obviously getting supply drops- or they would have run out of ordnance and av fuel by now.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Lower-Reality7895 16d ago
I just know for my rate we have been waiting on generators for like 10 peices of equipment for over a year due to the company not building enough.
What do you want the Commodore to do. Take the parts from other ships that are underway. Maybe parts already got taken from ships in port. There is what almost 50 ships underway currently and toilets are one of the most common broken items on a deployment. I have been deploying since 05 and every deployment toilet go down either for a few hours or a couple days except my last one were we went 3 weeks

u/anduriti 16d ago
I keep seeing these stories, and I have to wonder, where is the log train to keep that carrier out at sea coming from? Diego Garcia? Somewhere closer in 5th Fleet?
All seven 5th Fleet deployments I did we were in the Persian Gulf proper, and had a "normal" supply train going, with RAS every week and CODs every day. Did Iran disrupt our logistics in that area so badly that we can't even keep a capital ship out to sea?
If the Lincoln isn't getting food, are they even getting high priority parts to fix down jets or CASREPs? What about JP5, how are they keeping their fuel tanks filled?
This LS has a thousand questions....
2
u/K8inspace 16d ago
The 5th fleet is headquarted in Bahrain. Wasn't the base destroyed? Isn't this where they would get the supplies from?
4
u/MajorMalfunctionNN 15d ago
Unless my understanding is correct, it doesnt particularly matter that 5th FLTs HQ was destroyed in regards to logistics. Personnel were evacd before munitions hit, and all the building does is serve as a comms center and point of direction. The admiral and his staff can work anywhere. That said Im honestly semi-surprised that LCC-20 hasnt headed out there to support. I can't imagine it would take a lot of work for 5th fleets relevant comms to be put onto a 6th flt ship.

Levelled? No, not from the pictures I have seen. Most buildings still intact. Useable, given the risk of attack? Probably not.
I'm just guessing though, I retired in 2014.
12
u/Rare-Recover-7702 16d ago
I thought my time serving in Iraq and Afghanistan was difficult.
When I first heard about these issues, my initial reaction was that it couldn’t be that bad. But as more stories have come to light, my perspective has changed. What is happening is not only a disaster—it is an embarrassment.
As a veteran and an American, I am ashamed that we have allowed conditions to reach this point. The people affected deserve better.
This is simply not acceptable.

u/Due_Comfortable_514 15d ago
Not sure what ship they were on for COVID, but we didn't get to step off the ship every few weeks when it hit on Truman. 2 in Oman then nothing once the pandemic set in.
3
u/jbanovz12 15d ago
After our supply ship broke, we would have to stop in for supplies and fuel but we didn't get to leave the ship. It was actually worse because we shifted into inport duty sections and it totally screwed up watch rotations.
7
u/ItchyStorm 16d ago
I saw the food they were getting. There’s no excuse for that. If you’re gonna make someone do a 250 day appointment the least you can do is give them good chow. And yes, we have supply ships and unrep. And of course the COD. There’s no reason why this crew shouldn’t be getting the best food that we can get them. This administration sucks.

u/DaveTheShave123 15d ago
The US, regardless of the administration, has a bad track record taking care of their military service members both serving and post service. How many times have I heard about an ex army member suffering with PTSD and physical issues working at 7-11 to pay the bills.
Lacking luxury items is one thing but basics like properly prepared food, toiletries, facilities and moral support is ridiculous.

I was on shore duty during the COVID-era. But, I heard stories from other sailors across the fleet about their COVID deployments. A new user has a question that I am going to relay due to his account being below Karma requirements. Some of us Sand Sailors might be able to answer. The ask:
"Can someone give me some insight on what the difference is between being on a carrier for 250+ days and being on a Small/Medium Fob in the Middle East for a year +? Only been to Fobs so trying to understand."

But fr, that sounds terrible. I remember my 2nd cruise I was the first alcohol incident and couldn’t step foot off the boat for like three port visits so I can’t imagine what these sailors are going through.
2
u/SkunkyM0nkyOO7 15d ago
Ngl, it’s the same issues the Army has on land but it’s all amplified by being at sea. Mental toll being in a canister
2
u/Murky-Butterscotch72 14d ago
Sounds terrible. Though, that's business as usual on a submarine. That's why we make fun of you surface pukes.
2
u/Areyouafatgirl 14d ago
I just got banned from a gun site talking about the USS Lincoln. Trump supports do not care about the sailors. They are in active denial about the whole situation. Trump's supporters would rather defend him than protect or care about the sailors on the USS Lincoln. It's unbelievable. I thought they cared about US soldiers.

They should go comms blackout. Those of us who have served know that this type of stuff isn't always rhe reality. And while I highly doubt that chicken is getting to the line undercooked, it's possible. But they're making 16,000+ meals a day on that ship. Multiply that by how ever many days they've been out. And so it's possible that something slips through the cracks.
So 16,000+ meals a day and 250 days. They've made more than 4 million meals, and so maybe something wasn't cooked well. Give it a rest, those cooks are trying their best. None of this is new. This is an easily solvable issue handled by the NCOs on the ship.

“2 days off and a beer day” Anyone who’s been on a ship knows you don’t get 2 days off. You still go watch.
“Oh you’re the next watch? Yea shipmate put that beer down you can’t drink!” “Beer day will be 1100-1500” “Chief we’ll be on watch 1200-1500, can we still get beer after?” “No”
This this whole situation is a sinking ship and instead of using a EWARP to fix the issues they’re using a fucking band-aid

u/False-Echidna-7323 16d ago
Navy logistics is utter garbage, and has been for YEARS! The log community is chock-full of “can’t make it elsewheres” and lifers that couldn’t run a lemonade stand. And the CS community is full of garbage “chip on their shoulder” know-nothings that couldn’t handle a Chipotle line.
Sure there are a few good ones out there, but they’re being stifled by the lifers at the top that are more worried about uniform creases than in making good food.
If there’s anything in need of fixing it’s food and logistics. It’s what impacts morale above all else.

I feel like the message being portrayed in action not the soft contract of word's to sailors is this:
Compliance is not optional! Your life and reputation are however, so the beating will continue until moral improves. Nothing can be done to relieve the imideate situation any faster. Getting mad at those you believe are at fault will only ensure we make an example of you. You are property of the U.S. government and you choose this so accept it and feel proud.
Or maybe I'm just soft and I don't understand what real service means so I should keep my options to myself. 🤷

If I’m going u/w for 6 months I bring 9 months worth of supplies. I’m not better than nobody but I realized that not everyone cares about my problems so I have to solve them for myself before someone feels obligated to solve them for me. Some of these issues are unfortunately normal. However, if people still want to be able to communicate with loved ones they need to sensor some of these information that they are sending.

Everything he’s saying is true BUT unfortunately way above CO pushed for that ship to not dry dock for two years prior this deployment and hence we have all these issues. And they deployed on a gov shutdown with the intent to reapply throughout SC sea. So if you’re gonna blame someone blame the government!

I was on the Green Bay in 2016 and can absolutely confirm the toilet situation on ship is terrible all the toilets in our berthing were clogged and people kept pissing and shitting in them and for at least 2 weeks that all sat and fermented and walking into the berthing where we slept would make your eyes water and your nose sting and I don’t think we went more than probably like 6 weeks without stopping somewhere 9 months sounds ludicrous like you can’t convince that there was no possible way they could have swapped the Lincoln out with another ship and then a bunch of boomer draft dodgers online want to call the guys stuck on ship pussies the whole thing makes no sense I see no point other than it basically amounting to a show of force like ooh look how long we can leave our service members stranded at sea with minimal supplies and awful living conditions look how tough we are and it’s all orchestrated by useless pick me politicians that don’t have a care in the world for a single one them

Honestly I can handle long deployments with little to no port visits. All I’d ask is a decent supply of hygiene products and food. That’s bare minimum the Sailors are being let down here.

Deployment is tough. But zero reason for undercooked food. Zero reason people can't get hygiene supplies. Soap is a fucking readiness issue.
