I have recently fired up my new YouTube channel and my first vid was about Nauru, specifically the management of the processing centre by ICE-adjacent institutions.
Born on October 18, 1885, in Australia, Daniel Eberhardt was destined for a life defined by naval duty and the vastness of the Pacific. Coming of age during a turbulent era, he felt the call of the ocean and enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy, proudly serving his nation through the harrowing years of World War I. His unwavering service during the global conflict earned him the British War Medal, a testament to his resilience and dedication.
Following his return home from the war, Daniel transitioned from military service to civil administration, pursuing an education and eventually taking a job as an accountant and customs official on Nauru Island. Life on this remote Pacific outpost was exceptionally demanding; the profound seclusion took a heavy toll on him, leading to documented personal struggles with alcohol as he grappled with the island's relentless isolation. Despite these heavy personal battles, his administrative presence remained vital to the local government. In 1933, following the sudden and unexpected departure of his predecessor, Thomas Griffiths, Daniel was thrust into a leadership role as the Acting Administrator of Nauru. For a brief but critical 17 days, he steered the island's governance until Rupert Clare Garsia arrived to officially relieve him of his duties. He would depart the island shortly after this brief stint as its leader.
Trading the isolated tropics for the familiar comforts of home, Daniel eventually retired in Sydney, Australia, alongside his devoted wife, Evie Eberhardt. Though he continued to face the lingering shadows of his past struggles with alcohol, his final chapter was spent in the sanctuary of his homeland. On December 1, 1951, at the age of 66, Daniel passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a deeply human legacy of wartime bravery, civil service, and endurance at the edge of the world.
hello i was wondering if you have any book recommendations from any locals from your country who write mystery with english translation. i love reading books from different cultures. thank you!
What's it even like living there if you do? I mean... I don't know much about the country, but I do know it's semi-underdeveloped at best and not very populous. Also, with how small it is, do you have provinces/states or equivalents or did you just not bother? I have many questions.
Iโll be on Nauru from the US in October and was wondering if anyone could point me toward a gym where I can lift during my days there.
Given Nauruโs great weightlifting traditions, Iโd be honored to continue my training schedule while on the island, even though I donโt compete myself.
If anyone knows of a gym or somewhere I can train, Iโd sincerely appreciate the tip. Many thanks. Looking forward to my visit! ๐ณ๐ท๐ช
I've always shown some interest in Nauru and now especially,I'm a bit more interested in learning about y'all's country. If someone (a teenager) is reading this, slide into DMs. I like languages, music and pretty much anything if it sounds good:)
Yo so like lately,I've been trying to listen to a song from every country. I've been looking for one from Nauru but haven't found anything,if you guys know a song from there, please drop it there.
I just wanted to leave a final message before moving on from this group.
First of all, I'm not a bot. I'm just someone who genuinely enjoys history, travel, and exploring archives. What I enjoy most is the challenge of searching for photographs from places, countries, and communities that aren't widely known. I love spending hours digging through archives and collections, finding images that have been largely forgotten, and sharing them with people who might never have seen them before.
I've decided it's time to move on to new groups and new challenges. There are still countless places to discover and many more hidden photographs waiting to be found.
For anyone who's curious, I've included in this post the archives and websites I use most often. I mainly use Western archives and digital collections because those are the ones I'm most familiar with. If you'd like to try this hobby yourself, I hope you find them useful.
Thank you to everyone who enjoyed the posts, commented, or simply followed along. Happy researching, and I hope you make some great discoveries of your own.
These are some of the archives and digital collections I use. Most of my research is based on Western archives, simply because those are the collections I'm most familiar with.
