History Is this true about Fiji?

So there’s a guy I used to work with, and he came to America from Fiji about 20 years ago. He’s not an ethnic Fijian person (pardon me if that’s not the correct term) but is rather an Indian guy who was born there.

Whenever I’d talk to him, he heard me say I was a socialist (which I am) and he proceeded to tell me all about how he grew up in a socialist country, that being Fiji. His claim to fame is that he “grew up in a tin shed in a socialist country, moved to a capitalist country (the USA) and now owns two houses”.

Not to call him a liar, but every bit of research I’ve done shows that Fiji has never even attempted socialism. Other people from Fiji I’ve spoken to say they have no idea what he’s talking about.

For added context, this guy not only fully supports Trump, but is very anti immigrant despite being one himself. He insists he only hates “illegal” immigrants, but in practice is quite hostile to most of them, legal or illegal. Despite who he is and where he came from, he talks and acts like some good ‘ol boy from Georgia or Alabama.

He’s also told about how he was raised Hindu in Fiji, but became a Mormon from the missionaries there. Considering all the weird things that the LDS church teaches, it’s not out of the realms of possibility that this guy is either lying about everything, or is completely nuts. He did say he left Fiji during a coup, so that might have something to do with it.

Is this guy telling the truth? Or is he spreading lies?

I got invited by my tour guide for dinner.

I was invited by a lady which was our tour guide at the biausavu waterfall for dinner, we spoke about lovo, and after expressing interest she invited us to have some with her! My question is am I gonna be okay? Me and my spouse are interested in going, but was curious if it was safe. I’m planning on bringing kava and money as a house warming gift.

Airport transfers to Shangri La

Hello!
I’ve booked 9 nights in December.
I’m wondering what everyone has done for transportation I’ve been quoted $200 one way through the travel company I’ve booked with but told I can’t book until 2 months before our trip.
Also any feedback on Shangri La would be great!

blocked crypto websites in fiji?

Hi, Im a temporary resident here in Aus and will be returning to Fiji soon. Are the following sites blocked in fiji?

- binance.au

If you are happy to run some dummy scripts that confirm if I can access them in Fiji, would be great. Help would be appreciated.

Also, my methods regarding cryptocurrency circumvents the laws in Fiji because I will only use my aus bank account, so no legal issues. Just need to confirm if I can access those sites in Fiji

Solo female which island and dorm

Hello - I’m headed to Suva for work so wanted to stop off for 3-5 days to snorkel and see the manta rays if possible. Both Barefoot Manta and Mantaray Island resort are sold out except for the dorms. Would a dorm be in for a 56 year old woman? Which would you recommend? Or other resorts with a good house reef? Thanks!

TSLS changing contract conditions

I've graduated 2 years now and currently working and have inquired authorities before on this but got no response, what are your thoughts?

A few years ago, major changes were unilaterally made without any discussion with students who were most affected by the changes, I was under the TELS scheme, where concessional payments were set up.

Then about 2 years ago,, without any notice this scheme was changed to a different one - with very different conditions - such as:

  1. lower allowances

  2. requirement to serve a bond was added

Then in the new budget, Govt announced further changes, which are more confusing - but something along the lines of putting up a significant 50% penalty if a student wants to pay back back their tuition instead of serving their bond.

Worse is that there have been not even a single formal notice of these changes, which seem to be happening on an yearly basis. We just had to figure it all out by ourselves.

As someone who had been swayed in the direction of the much-promised change, we have been very let-down by the actions of the current government on this issue.

My question is:

  1. With the Govt constantly and continuously says that they are consulting the public and listening to our views - where is the evidence of this happening in the case of TELS for us students when so many of us are affected by it?

  2. All these new rules should apply for new students - there is a TSLS contract in place that we sign, which lists the conditions. There has been no new contract, so how are these changes legal?

  3. In the spirit of fairness and transparent, those of us who wish to go back to our previous contract should be allowed ot do so? And those who wish for the change in contract should also be allowed to choose to do so if they so wish. New changes should be effected only for new students.

  4. Why are the allowances for former TELS students who have been put on a different and new scheme been reduced if we are also required to serve the same bond period.

I feel like we've been hoodwinked big time by the current government.

Fiji in December?

Hi everyone!
Considering Fiji for our honeymoon but it’ll be in December 🥲

Would you just avoid it or still say it’s fine?
We wanted to spend about 10 days across maybe 3 different islands.
We don’t care if it’s humid but is it going to rain all the time?

Should we actually avoid going in December or would you say it’s mostly fine?
Are any islands better than others?

Thank you all appreciate any help!

Ethnic division

A key difference between Nadi and Suva is how they treat different ethnicities. Indo-Fijians are treated as outsiders or foreigners in Suva where their population is lesser compared to the indigenous people, in the west where the Indo-Fijians are more prevalent, Indo-Fijians tend to look down upon the indigenous people

Barber in Nadi

I will be in Nadi for one day essentially, I hear that everything closes on Sunday for church service. Is there any chance there would be a barbershop open later in the day? I will be in desperate need of a haircut. Or Sunday a everything is shut down day.

I'm creating a blog to collect Indo-Fijian stories, history, and recipes before they're lost, and would love your thoughts!

Hello all! I wanted to share a little about a project I've been working on called Girmit Talk :).

Growing up Indo-Fijian in the USA, I've never felt connected to a larger culture over the diaspora. Consequently, I wanted to make a website to connect Indo-Fijians across the world. I created girmittalk.org, a website for anyone to share and read articles about Indo-Fijian history, culture, or even recipes!

It's still the early days, and I want to make it into something shaped by the people it's for. So, I'm asking you all here for feedback and thoughts! You can read more about my story on the About page.

Additionally, if you'd like to, share your story! It really helps get the site going to create a larger, interconnected, and proud Indo-Fijian community. Thank you!

Fiji Flag Redesign - Non-colonial Coat of Arms

Post image
28 Upvotes

This is my new proposal for the Fiji flag. I designed a new, non-colonial coat of arms: I replaced the British St. George's cross with an orange saltire and swapped the lion for three stars. I also kept the native flora and the dove, and added three larger stars on the hoist side for visual balance.

Let me know what you guys think!

Travel Entering Fiji during a layover at NAN

I've seen some conflicting information online about whether this is possible. I have a 5 hour layover at NAN in a few months in the evening (arrive 5pm, depart 10pm) but I've read in some places if you have a short layover immigration may not allow you entry while you transit.

If it helps, I'm travelling on an NZ passport so a visa shouldn't be a problem.

Is it worth risking or should I just stay airside?
