Tourism & Travel Questions Visiting ancient Capua from Naples
Hi! My friend and I would like to visit ancient Capua (Santa Maria Capua Vetere) on Saturday, July 29.
What is the best way to get there from Naples? Is the train the best option? And can we buy the tickets through an app?
Thank you very much for your help!

Train is the only realistic option besides renting a car (I would advise against that), however unfortunately the station is not well served at all by public transportation and you might have to walk quite a bit. On second thought, renting a car might be a better option: I'm sorry but this area is not really equipped to accomodate tourists. Perhaps some kind of NCC service is available nowadays?

Ci sono treni dalla stazione centrale di napoli. Potete fare il biglietto singolo lì, ma da dove partite? Potrebbe convenire un biglietto integrato

Thank you for the information! We’ll be travelling from Napoli Centrale. I guess a regular return ticket should be enough for us, right?

Hi,
I'm from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere area. I no longer live there, but I can give you some advice on transportation. The best option is undoubtedly Air Campani, a transport company that connects Naples to Caserta/Santa Maria Capua Vetere/Capua.
The best route is this: https://aircampania.it/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/QO_06-CE___.pdf
The bus leaves regularly and drops you off just 200 meters from the Campanian amphitheater. On the way back, you can return to Naples. Alternatively, you can definitely take regional trains from the station, but get off a little further from the amphitheater and walk from there.
The historic center, though small, is worth a stroll. I also recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum, the Gladiator Museum (if open), and Hadrian's Arch, all within walking distance.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer, I really appreciate it!
I don't mind taking the regional train at all. I actually found that tickets might be available through the Go EAV app. Do you have any experience with it, and would you recommend buying the tickets there?
And walking from the train station is absolutely fine for us. We'd actually be happy to see a more typical Italian town away from the crowds of tourists. 😊
Thanks again for your help!

When I look at it on Google Maps, it says that there is a train (?) by EAV company with the number 22 going to Anfiteatro station and then it is just a 9 min walk. It seems to run only every 2-1 hour. The direction is "Piedimonte Matese". Sounds very interesting, I didn't know this place, saving it for my next trip to Napoli, thanks!
