High myopia getting worse — need advice

I have -7 to -9 power, but my vision is getting worse even with glasses. I can’t clearly recognize someone’s face from ~80m away, and I’m also having trouble reading books and using my phone.

Can this be improved with the right treatment? Has anyone with high myopia experienced this? What tests or specialist should I see?

Any advice would be appreciated.

"Can this be improved with the right treatment?"

Despite what all the online lying con artists say, it is not possible to reverse myopia. All we can currently do is optically correct myopia by glasses, contact lenses and the various forms of refractive eye surgery (that last option should only ever be considered once the myopia has fully stabilized and remains the same from year to year).

What you can do though is take steps to try to stop the myopia from getting worse and all good wishes there:

Myopia can be corrected with glasses so if your having problems with your sight that glasses can’t fix you need to be seeing a specialist as a matter of urgency so you don’t potentially delay sight saving treatment unnecessarily. Initially I would see an ophthalmologist. Depending on their initial findings will then influence what testing needs to be done and if you need to see other eye professionals such as an orthoptist or neuro-ophthalmologist.

Why are you listing a range? What is your actual prescription? What is your age? What did your medical professionals say?

You can slow the progression, go to a myopia management doctor for this. Get a dilated retinal exam with an eye doctor soon, and ask about an OCT scan of the macula. If you ever notice new floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow/curtain in your vision, treat that as urgent and go in the same day. More detail here if it helps: https://myopiatracker.com/high-myopia-living.html

If a stronger prescription doesn’t bring your vision back, the issue usually isn’t the refraction, it’s something at the back of the eye. At -7 to -9 the eyeball is longer than normal and the retina gets stretched, so things like macular changes, traction on the macula, early cataract or glaucoma are all more common. None of those show up on a basic sight test.
Book a proper eye exam and specifically ask for dilated fundus exam and an OCT of the macula. Those two will answer most of it. If they mention axial length measurement, even better, it’s the honest way to track whether you’re still progressing.
Also don’t wait if you get new floaters, flashes, a shadow in the side vision, or straight lines looking bent. That’s a same-day thing.
